What's it like to translate a classic like Frankenstein, do you change the names in YA translations and what does the day in a translator's life look like? You send it your questions, and I asked them to Maria Postema, a Dutch YA translator. P.s. Apologies about the echo!
This video isn't sponsored, but the publishers of Frankenstein, Blossom Books, were kind enough to put me in touch with Maria to arrange the interview.

• Can you review my book?
I’m always happy to hear about upcoming books, but I’m afraid I don’t review self-published books and can only accept a small number of books for review. I enjoy reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi, translated fiction and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction.
• Where is your accent from?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Lit at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and have lots of American friends. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!
• Where do you live?
I live in London and have been here for 6 years now.
• How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).

This was such an interesting video!! It's never talked about on Booktube because almost all the books everyone is reading are written in English but coming from an non-English speaking country, I read so much translation so it's really interesting to hear a translator talk about it!

This was fascinating and I’ve always been very curious about. I’m curious, is all translating work freelance or are there instances where publishers have translators on staff? I’d love more videos interviewing people in the publishing industry.

This is so interesting! It was really cool to hear about the specific examples of difficult bits to translate - I always wonder that when I come across a pun in a book!

This was fascinating and Maria is such a lovely person! I remember when you did a similar interview with Laura Watkinson, who does Dutch to English translations. I would love to know if Laura and Maria know each other!

Honestly, I prefer the Dutch version of Twilight over the original English one, Maria made it better in translation :')

I absolutely loved this! I always found it so fascinating to think about when reading books I knew so well in English in Dutch. Every sentence is a conscious choice, and the amount of work that goes into inhabiting somebody else's writing style and making it accessible to a whole new group of people is staggering!

Thank you for this video! I'm studying to be a translator and I'm a little scared about job opportunities to be honest. It would be amazing to translate YA books! She definitely looks like someone who loves their job.

I'm actually curious how many translations from Maria I have! But I do have all Hongerspelen/Hunger Games books :D

Really interesting video, especially the part about catching multiple meanings in one word. Thank you, Sanne & Maria! A lot of people hate Twilight, but I liked it a lot. Maybe because I read the Dutch translation ;-)

Zo gek om nu een gezicht te kunnen plaatsen bij die naam die ik zo vaak in mijn jeugdboeken zag staan 😂

Oh god I thought the Twilight series' translation was terrible ... It's what turned me to read the series in English! Of course I was 16 and now 27 so I don't know if it was *actually* bad or if it was because I'm Belgian and most English books are translated by Dutch people.

StrongImaginationA Ik begrijp je helemaal. Sommige vertaling zijn te “Hollands” voor Belgische lezers 😂 Ik ben om dezelfde reden in het Engels beginnen lezen. Ik kon het niet meer aan om steeds die knop te moeten omdraaien in mijn hoofd!

My first language is a really small one and I get really frustrated trying to read in it because most books just don't get translated. I kinda want to just try to translate my favorite books from English myself so other people could read them but I don't know how realistic that is.
