I'm still getting into the swing of filming non-travel week vlogs, but really wanted to share this one with you. Would love to hear what you'd like to see more of!
(Sorry about the weird face blur, I've just figured out how to turn it off, but it will be there in the next 2 vlogs too).
Disclaimer notes: I worked with the publisher of The Burning by Laura Bates for a paid Instagram post, but wasn't asked to include it anywhere else. I also got a free ticket to see Hank Green's event from the publisher.

• Can you review my book?
I’m always happy to hear about upcoming books, but I’m afraid I don’t review self-published books and can only accept a small number of books for review. I enjoy reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi, translated fiction and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction.
• Where is your accent from?
I was born and raised in the Netherlands, studied English Lit at Leiden University (also in the Netherlands), studied in the US for 3 months and have lots of American friends. I'm definitely not Irish or Canadian, I promise!
• Where do you live?
I live in London and have been here for 6 years now.
• How did you get into publishing?
I did publishing work experience, did a lot of networking and learned everything I know about social media from creating and running this channel. (P.s. You don't necessarily have to study Publishing or English to get a job in publishing!).

would be interesting to see how you write your to-do-list, like how you split up your tasks and stuff! :)

I really like these sort of videos and would love to see some newbie freelancer advice (mistakes you made, what you've learnt), as well as more general videos about freelancing such as how you discovered it, how to find clients, how many hours you typically do on each thing, how you decide prices.

you answered some questions I had like four years ago for a school project (about dubbing and subtitling in movies!) and I've always thought that was so generous of you.... I think it's great you still do it :)

Really enjoyed this vlog and being able to see snippets of what working as a freelancer is like! Would be super interested in seeing the process (thinking process and the work) behind what you do e.g. when setting up product shots, what do you consider, how do you build and edit the shot etc.

Lovely and interesting video! We’re curious, is it difficult to find clients to work with/for or do they usually find you? And what kind of administrative things do you have to take care of, how often, and is it difficult to do and understand? Definitely into more videos like this 😊!

I love this video but at the same time, it makes me sad because I want to be a freelancer so much but I'm currently working full time in a job I absolutely hate... Haha! Great video though!

Your hair looks so lovely in the opening and closing. How do you curl it?
@booksandquills

Thanks! I just wrap it around a normal sized curling iron (without using the clip), in different directions.

Loved the video! Do you usually buy the books you chat about in a non-sponsored video yourself, or do you ask the publisher for a review copy?
@booksandquills
@booksandquills 5 лет назад
+Suzanne Verheul (I deleted my first response because I misread your question, haha). I get sent quite a few books for review (with no obligation to post about them), but always ask to get sent an email first to see if I really want it, but I also still buy books myself, go to the library and also read from books I bought ages ago. When I spot a new book I’m interested in reading I’ll sometimes contact the publisher if I’ve been in touch before. So in a lot of videos it’s a 50/50 mix, and I’ll indicate in the description which ones were sent to me. :)
