In this video we show you how to install an external transmission cooler on a Toyota FJ Cruiser. When you install an external transmission cooler, you have two choices how you can do it. #1, you can install it "In-Series" with the stock transmission cooler in the radiator meaning the fluid will run through both the stock cooler and the aftermarket cooler before the fluid returns to the transmission. #2, you can bypass the stock cooler in the radiator and the fluid is only running through the aftermarket cooler. The benefit of bypassing is you no longer have to worry about a cooler failure in the radiator which could destroy your transmission. If the cooler in the radiator cracks, the ATF can mix with the engine coolant and that contaminated mix can make it back to the transmission and kill it. Automatic transmissions don't like anything but ATF.
**To use a Scan Gauge to monitor you auto trans temp, use the following codes to program it:
Gauge = Transmission Temperature (°F)

Rey has had some time to put some miles on his rig after the cooler and install and the preliminary numbers look really good. The true test however will be when he's climbing grades and 4wheeling in hot ambient temps so I will update this comment sometime in the summer of 2022 to let you know how his temps are looking in really hot weather.

@bry2k The cooler worked out fine for Rey. I'm running the exact same setup in my 3rd Gen 4runner, and my trans temps are good. You still have to use the tricks of the trade to keep temps down, though, like using 4lo on steep trails or shifting down on long sustained grades. Rey sold his FJ a while back, so I can't give any future updates, but my auto trans is doing great being bypassed and running the Hayden 699 cooler.

Been watching your videos since day 1, I must say your very thorough and practical. I appreciate this video as I have a 2014 FJ and the tyranny cooler is my next mod. I've seen both runs using the existing cooler and separate as you did and for the reasons you explained prefer it as a stand alone system. Thanks for taking the time to show us your craft! Thanks Anwar. You should read some of the negativity I've gotten on the various Facebook pages. The A750F trans was used in a lot of different models so I posted it on a ton of pages. Tons of people chiming in saying you don't need to change the fluid. Flushes are bad. You don't need to change it as often as you suggest, blah, blah, blah. I've done quite a bit of battling with people today defending my methodology. Pretty entertaining. I talked lots of shit and made lots of friends (actually enemies).

Well, it's a beneficial for both us and for the DIY community we serve. Yep, Rey gets work done on his rig but we get a video to share with the world. We've done the same for lots of total strangers. It's actually better when you can help a friend out in the process of creating a video. This however wasn't a repair but rather a mod to help his trans temps. I'm guessing you're referring to the transmission swap we did for Rey. Rey appreciates it and we appreciate him trusting us with his rig.

I actually removed the lower line on the stock cooler and ran new line to ext. cooler and then ran new line from the new cooler down to the inner metal line. This let me use the internal cooler for actual heating in the cold winter to get the trans fluid warmer quicker. My temps on hot summer days are around 140 while cruising 165 in traffic. good video Timmy !

Yeah, running an external cooler in-series with the stock cooler is definitely an option. The cooler we installed in this video has a pressure bypass which bypasses most of the cooling fins in the cooler until the fluid warms up and thins out. From experience, I'm not convinced the stock cooler does a whole lot to increase the operating temp of the fluid. It's when a load is put on the trans that raises the temp significantly. I have a 2000 3rd Gen 4runner with an external cooler in-series with the stock cooler and it can take quite a while for the trans temp to rise. I use that 4runner for commuting and leave pretty early for work when it's colder out and it's mostly freeway driving. The trans temp stays pretty low, low 100's for quite some time even though the engine has been at operating temp, 190 degrees. So yeah, I think it helps to raise the trans temp quicker, but from my experience, it doesn't seem to have as much of an effect as you think it would.

I’m an intermediate level wrencher. But when dealing with very important areas under the hood like this, I’m going to a shop. You do NOT have any room for error when doing a job like this, and I’m not sure I trust myself haha.

If you put bolts to plug the atf lines ( I believe 8 or 10mm diameter not threaded all the way up) and also using the clamps, your spillage with be very little. Also you can add an inline filter (like Magnafine) to the transmission return line.

Thanks for the tip on using the bolts to reduce the mess. I use the magnefine magnetic filters on my rigs for the transmission and power steering systems. It would be easy to add a filter into the return line at a later date if Rey decides he wants one.

Just did this. Following your vid almost verbatim. But I decided to run my send line on top and return on bottom. Similar to stock set up. Thought maybe doing it the other way would cause the Transmission pump to work harder then usual. I also reused the old return line to make my loop on the radiator when I was finished.

Thanks Chris, we have a video coming out soon showing how to do a flush on a Lexus GX470 which has the same A750F transmission you have in your FJ. The only difference is your FJ doesn't have a stock external cooler like the GX470 has. In this video, we show you which line is the send line and which is the return line. You would want to remove the rubber return line off the nipple of the trans cooler on the driver side of the radiator and hook up a 3/8" transmission hose long enough to run down to a catch container with graduated quart marks and then start the flush procedure of starting the vehicle, draining out a quart, stopping the vehicle, and then pumping in a new quart of WS ATF into the side of the trans. You keep repeating that procedure until you've exchanged out around 12 quarts. If the fluid still doesn't look really clean at the 12 quart mark, run a 13th quart through and you'll most likely see the fluid looking really clean and brand new coming out of the drain hose. When you watch the video we put out, it will very clear how you do it and then how you go through the fluid check procedure afterwards. If you haven't invested in a scan gauge to monitor your trans temp, I highly recommend you invest in one so you know the temp your trans is running at along with being able to monitor your coolant temp and other things as well like charging volts. It's a smart investment.

The hoses on Japanese cars are sized in metrics. When replacing or using hoses in the US, they are sized in SAE. There is always a tight fit when using SAE hose. Ensure they are lubricated with oil or silicone spray and quickly insert.

I've always used ATF to lubricate the hoses I was installing but never tried silicone spray. Maybe I'll get a try.

I did shoot a video of installing it on my 98 4runner and it would pretty much be the same for your 1st Gen Tacoma. The video I shot wasn't the usual step by step but rather a show and tell how I did it but it will still provide the detail necessary to give people a clear idea how to do it.

Hey Tim, love your videos! I mounted my cooler where it fills top to bottom. I had one radiator mechanic say that may be hard on your transmission pump - pushing fluid uphill, he said, makes the transmission pump work harder (ie)wearing out sooner. Is there any validity to this??

I've never heard that. The pump sucks fluid from the pan through a fine mesh metal filter and through very small channels in the valve body. If it can do that, pushing fluid uphill through a cooler would be very easy for the pump to handle.

I did this with my 2016 Rav4 using a smaller Hayden transmission cooler. It kept my Transmission temp between 170-190F even at steep incline with passengers and full cargo during the summer time with ambient temp of 100F. I drive a 4runner now and thinking about doing this mod again. My question to you Timmy now is this. Is it ok to just fill the transmission cooler with atf, clamping down the bottom hose so it won't spill, then connecting the hoses and clamping it down? My theory is by adding the amount of atf equivalent to the capacity of the cooler will keep the fluid level close to its original level. Can you enlighten us. Thank you!

I suppose you could try to pre-fill it but that wouldn't replace confirming you have the level correct after you're done either with the dipstick if you have an older 4runner or doing the fluid level check procedure if you have a sealed transmission. We're not talking a lot of fluid you have to add. I personally wouldn't bother trying to pre-fill the cooler. Glad you like the video.

Hi Timmy. I live in Texas where the temperature is 108°F in summer. Would be sufficient an external cooler? Or in this case do you recommended connect in-Series with the stock transmission cooler in the radiator? My transmission was rebuild for water mixed with the ATF and I am scared get water again in my transmission. I have a Tacoma 2006 with transmission A750. Thank you for your time!!

That cooler ran bypassed should be enough to keep your trans temps down but it you're climbing long steep grades in 108 degree weather, that's a different story. There are times you might find that it's prudent to pull over and give your trans and engine a break. This is why it's imperative to monitor your trans and engine temps to know when it's smart to just pull over and let things cool down. It's best to keep the engine running and even raise the rpms to pull more air with the cooling fan. When the temps drop back to normal, you continue on.

I've never looked at the front end of a 2005 Tacoma to see the space available, but I would guess you could make it work. None of this is plug and play. You have to figure out where you want to mount it and how to make it work with the supplied mounting straps. You bend the straps to the shape you need to in order for it to work. There's always some trial and error involved, but the straps are easy to bend. You might have to drill a hole or holes if where you want to mount it doesn't have existing holes you can use.

I'd recommend the same one. The Hayden 699. I just installed one myself on my 98 4runner. You can go smaller if you want and you could choose to run it in-series as well instead of bypassing the stock cooler. The most important thing is to start monitoring your trans temps if you currently aren't and to give your transmission some extra cooling capacity. Heat is the big killer of automatic transmissions.

@@dverschoor06 I've barely driven my rig since installing the cooler. I did one drive up a sustained 7 mile / 2000 ft elevation gain climb and I hit 206 by the time I reached the top of the climb. I would usually hit around 230+ with my previous set-up running a smaller cooler in-series with the stock cooler in the radiator. But, the ambient temps were pretty cool that day. I might decide to run that Hayden 699 in-series with the stock cooler but I need to test it out for a while before doing that. Rey has told me his temps have been really good since I installed the cooler on his rig but I don't know if he's climbed a grade like I tested mine out on yet. He's driven up in the mountains several times but I don't know if he's climbed anything quite as sustained as I have.

The choice to bypass is to prevent a trans cooler failure inside the radiator destroying the automatic transmission. Do a search for "Pink Milkshake" for automatic transmission failures and you'll learn what I'm talking about.

I’ve installed 2 coolers on my truck. I started off with a smaller one and mounted it horizontally where you have an upper and lower port. On my first install I had hot fluid coming in the top and then the cooled fluid flowing back to transmission out of the bottom. I felt like it wasn’t doing anything so I bought the next size up and then did some more reading on plumbing it oppositely. Where you have hot coming in bottom and cold leaving the top. Now it seems to be keeping top end temps down 7-8 degrees. Do you think I caused any transmission damage or fluid starvation the way I had it plumbed the first time? I’m worried about that a little bit.

@@Steve_Balboni I'm not sure if air bubbles get trapped in the cooler and limit the cooling capacity. The transmission isn't being starved of fluid. It's just that there's the possibility the cooling capacity of the trans cooler is affected by air bubbles. I've had a trans cooler with the fluid entering the top and exiting the bottom for around 8 years and there's no issues with my transmission.

Has the guy regeared the front and rear differential? I understand the cooler is cheaper but it's only treating the symptom the proper solution is to regear for the tire size

Re-gearing does help a bit but still won’t fix it. The proper solution is the cooler actually.

Not only regear for the tire size, but the additional weight the vehicle is hauling around. Bumpers, winches, rooftop tents, etc are heavy, and add substantial wind resistance. These can make a vehicle work quite a bit harder than it needs to with factory gearing.

Rey's rig has been re-geared to 4.88. You don't have to have bigger tires or a heavily modded rig with lots of extra weight to incur high trans temps. My stock 2000 4runner even with an external trans cooler can hit some really high temps when climbing sustained grades. Re-gearing can help but it's not the only solution.
