I haven't caught up woth thebmore recent videos to see if you've resolved the issue, but if the bearing surface on the shaft is only uneven and notchy, but not worn too deeply, you may be able to smooth it with some progressively finer sandpaper, down to a good polish. If it's worn too much, you'll have excessive bearing clearance, but if it's only worn a tiny bit, then smoothing it out should prolong your new bearing life. I dont know of any of the manuals give an allowable wear spec, though. They usually just say "inspect for wear snd replace if any wear is found" or something else vague.

Steve, I think what was binding was the reverse gear. Since there is nothing holding the lever the gravity just brings it close to the gears and it binds. I had that issue before. The shaft might be an issue but it wouldn’t cause binding. At least that is what I can see from a distance

I really appreciate these videos. I have a 76 Spitfire project that someone started then never completed (as a spit 6) that I picked up for next to nothing. I plan to convert to electric but I'm going to use the stock transmission and probably update the rear diff. Anyway I plan to look inside to see if everything looks kosher in there since this vehicle has been sitting in various barns since the 1980's. I think I have a spitfire and a GT6 gearbox so I'll have to run some SN# and see what all I'm messing with. Your work is appreciated.

That is going to be an exciting project for sure. In the back of my mind if I need to ever replace the engine I have considered electric. Keep us posted on your build!
