Huddersfield station is awesome. It reminds me of the old joke about Bristol. The city with a railway station that looks like a cathedral, and a cathedral that looks like a railway station!

While many people seem to dislike the class 802s because of the comfort, I believe they are great stock. They have been allowed to give an intercity service across the pennies boosting capacity and enabling further use of the transpennine route. Excellent review!

@@petersmith4455 Pretty harsh take on these. The old stock on this route wasn't bad comfort-wise but came nowhere close to meeting demand. These are better suited to the route when compared to the older stock and will be significantly better for the environment as they can run on both diesel and overhead wires.

They're good trains but their build quality can be questioned as well as their interior. The seats are my main criticism. Surely there are seat designs out there that save weight but are still comfortable? Maybe use the same seats as the GWR/Scotrail HSTs?

Totally agree with you, I use to go here sometimes when at college in the '80s, it is sad though that they appear to have to have done only the bare minimum in investment since then, but that could apply to everything outside of the south-east, good luck with your education.

"Very poor window alignment" - a good turn of phrase for total indifference by rolling stock designers. Other than that, Trans-Pennine tend to be my favourite franchise and I will often take them out of choice over Avanti. As a fellow-Yorkshireman I was heartened to hear you refer to Leeds City station by its traditional name! Another good film Dylan, I think the commentary is better than sub-titles.

Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman described Huddersfield Station as “the most splendid in England”. There may well be several other stations that would challenge that claim but the fact is that for a traditional industrial northern town like Huddersfield, the station is indeed a splendid one.

As in other reviews, TransPennine seem to offer a good product with these Class 802 units, although I think Lumo have done slightly better on the interior (perhaps they took their cue from TP and improved on the padding, lighting and several other small points. I must go back and have another look at Lumo to confirm my thoughts. At any rate, these units make up for the lack of capacity on a single Class 185. I was fortunate to have a couple of rides on these units and thought that a 5 car set would have been a better offering. i'm just wondering what my own local regional train operator, V/Line, might do when it comes time to replace 4 and 5 car loco-hauled sets that have a catering facility for medium/long distance journeys. The lovely V/Locity units at 3 cars long just don't cut it for journeys such as Melbourne to Echuca, Maryborough or Bairnsdale. Anyway, thanks again for a great review of the TP Class 802 units and hope you and your family and friends have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and can avoid this latest Covid curse, Omicron. Cheers from Michael.

Sorry I missed this on Monday. The holiday threw me off & I forgot. Yes, your home-based train station is a beautiful structure. It's nice to visualize where you depart from. Your current train is sleek & modern. Peeking in at first class doesn't seem to have seats any thicker than what you had. Everything does seem to be quite clean & well kept. For the price & distance it was a goodly price. Hoping they get the food service back on board. Merry Xmas & a happy, healthy New Year. Happy traveling.

I was fortune to do that journey from Leeds to Edinburgh on a TPE Nova 1 just prior to the first lockdown for £2 each way!! I got the tickets in the TPE ticket sale. Also, at Morpeth they switch back to diesel for the remainder of the journey as there is insufficient power to meet the demand for trains running on electricity.

I appreciate that different coaches may give different ride. My Azuma to Edinburgh a few months ago vibrated a lot above 115mph. I'm booked on lumo in Feb, so I'll see if there's any difference. My local 80n in the West Country can also be a mixed bag. Wrt seats, the 2nd class GWR seats catch me on the back of my thighs where the seat rises towards the front edge, but as you say, the shape is generally ok. I worry the units will age quickly, given the current variation in ride quality between different coaches.

My criticism of the standard class seats on any 80x train is their shape. Padding doesn't matter too much, but I like to be able to relax into a seat on a long journey like this. I felt I could comfortably do so on any HST or even a class 166 Turbo. But the 80x seats I find are too upright so I can't relax into them.

I travelled on one of these train recently between Edinburgh and Newcastle. Overall they are very smart looking trains with nice interior, but I found the seats to be a little too uncomfy even for a journey of just under two hours. Then again that might just be because I’d had a hard day at work and I’d only just gotten off an overcrowded class 385 from Glasgow to Edinburgh and of course that’s on one of the infamous ironing board style seats. So by the time I’d gotten to Newcastle I was begging for something really comfy

I haven't travelled on one of these but the seats on the "Javelin" trains (similar class) out of St Pancras seem fine to me. These trains are also bi-mode, 3rd rail and overhead electric, they do travel at 140 mph on the HS1 sections but sometimes have to wait as Eurostar does not like it's 180 mph trains to have to slow down with a slower train in front!. Will be interesting to see how the planned changes to the railways improves journey time for services like this.

Personally I really like the 802s, I think the blue interiors of TPE and Hull Trains are brighter than the dull GWR sets but much less over the top and harsh than the red of LNER. Could definitely do with softer lighting though! Being blinded on a night is never great. The 802s also don't suffer from the same issues as the LNER Azumas where different lengths of trains can lead to unit types being swapped out, short sets being run and reservations being completely useless. They also don't have the issue of a quiet coach in the middle and standard class wheelchair spaces right at the far end of the platforms in London that plague the LNER sets and reduce accessibility.

The train itself was over 20 minutes late which isn’t uncommon and as this is the last train to get to leeds from Huddersfield before 9 it was rammed with commuters for the first 20 minutes, although after this it was quite a peaceful journey. Interesting video! The Huddersfield station is very impressive but I’m surprised that it seems small inside. I was expecting a huge hall to match the classic facade but it seems you immediately go directly to the platforms. I wonder if it was always like that. I would think that a Victorian station would have had an impressive passenger ticketing and waiting area. I agree that the blue colour of the trains is great (the only other colour that I think is impressive on trains is red, such as the Italian ones).

Huddersfield is due a pretty substantial rebuild in the near future as part of the upgrade of this route to high speed running and electrification. As far as Im aware though the passeneger facilities are very similar to when the station opened and wont change a huge amount after the upgrade in terms of size (aside from a potential northern entrance linked to a redevelopment of the goods yards on that side of the station).
