I think Inspector Sands is probably looking for another job by now. If it took him that long to report to the control room then he certainly must have been fired.

I suspect it was made up and meant something else. It happens with tanoy and commercial walkie talkies all the time. Something which can be announced but not cause panic.

"Inspector Sands" is a code phrase used by public transport authorities in the United Kingdom, including Network Rail and London Underground, to alert staff and other agencies, such as the police, to an emergency or potential emergency such as a fire or bomb threat without alerting the public and creating panic.

Have seen this company transform over the years and it's a fine one to travel on. Once booked Manchester to Glasgow in 1st for £18 a few years ago and realised if i had something to eat and drink every time it was offered and worked out how much it would cost normally to buy off the trolley in standard i ended up consuming half the fare back so ended up effectively eating and drinking half the fare back

Or just increase the national speed limit on the motorways. I'm sure that safety wouldn't be altered significantly if the speed limit on motorways was increased to 130kph/80mph. Though it would be impossible to safely drive at 177kph/110mph.

How great to ride on a new train when everything is in perfect condition! The wi-fi not connecting was the only issue, but that seems to happen every now and again no matter where you are. I loved the way the countryside opened up after Lancaster with beautiful early spring scenery. Nice touch to end with the daffodils in the foreground. Looking forward to the next scenic part of the journey.

This is such an upgrade from the trains they used to run up to Edinburgh and Glasgow that it's almost laughable. When I lived in Bolton for uni, I'd generally be catching the train to and from Glasgow as it passed through Bolton, and my gosh, the fact that they used to run Pacers the full distance from Liverpool through to Glasgow shocks me but they did it. So sure these new CAF trains might have a bit of a rattle but compared to those old shitboxes that were the Class 144s, it's barely even noticeable. These look so nice and are nicely fast enough that they don't impact trains on the WCML as much as the older 144s and 158s used to do when they had the full run up to Scotland, excellent choice from TransPennine Express to get these, they have the option to get more as well which I hope they will.

I’m glad that it was as good on the inside as the outside. The livery was stunning. Up in Scotland we are finding first class seems to be a bit hit and miss for getting advanced but they are there. You just need to be a bit of a slave to the machine of advanced alerts and being willing to run between websites when the LNER one buggers up.

Have to say since the TPE refurb, I am very impressed with what they done to the class 350 and class 185. I went on both pre covid lockdown, and want to go on the Nova’s post covid lockdown. Standard class seems to be extremely good on TPE services and set the bar very with: great leg room, nice bright interiors, seats seem more premium in terms of look. Not been in 1st class as it is a lot even before and no doubt after lockdown for what you get. Before lockdown and advance 1st class was about £65.00 between Manchester and York fixed term and you did not get much in terms of free stuff, so I’d rather go for standard on TPE and then just pay for a coffee or tea or whatever if wanted. However for standard class superb. In terms of 1st class LNER have set the bar high on all 3 trains HST (now retired), 91 (in storage), and Azumas all seem to be of outstanding quality in 1st class.

I did the full Edinburgh/Manchester service very recently, and both the train there and back were cancelled. We were instructed to board an Avanti West Coast train to London Euston and change at Preston, but during the ride to Preston the man on the loudspeaker said those who were going to Manchester had to get off the train at Carlisle and wait for the next train (which was a Tanspennine coming from Glasgow), because TP hadn't even contacted Avanti asking permission for their passengers to take an Avanti service. On the return, the service back to Edinburgh was cancelled as well and we took a Northern service to Preston and then took an Avanti back. I'm sure TP had sorted out the issues with Avanti this time around because at least we had a pleasant trip back. Basically, if anyone is on Transpennine's Edinburgh/Manchester service, be prepared for cancellations! Thank you for the trip report Dylan!

The freight trains through Platforms 13 and 14 serve the container terminal at Trafford Park and come from the Heald Green direction (Manchester Airport route). They can be as much as hourly in each direction and actually are held up often by the slower moving and stopping passenger services through that part of Manchester. Yes it is a VERY congested section through Piccadilly & Oxford Road stations but it could be helped by passenger services being formed of at least 4 vehicles to assist in passenger flow.

I think the main problems that TPX had faced up until a couple of years ago were mostly linked to just not having enough trains, and so the stock was run ragged and there was no slack in the system. Now that they've got the Nova trains and have still got most/all of the 185s, that gives them a lot more flexibility. If they are short of available trains, for example, they could downgrade one of the services that should use 2×185 to a single unit and release the second unit to be used elsewhere - not ideal as those trains will then be crowded, but a lot better than cancelling a train!

Nice video, but even better if you had mentioned Tebay Gap and Shap, the specific parts of the trip where it is essential to be looking out of the window at the amazing scenery. Especially on a day with the decent weather you had (though in the Pennines the weather is of course a lottery).

Great video! A tip for folks with a 16-25 Railcard - you can get 1/2 off TPE advances (vice the usual 1/3) if you book through their website and select 'offers' - thus making a trip like this even cheaper!

Again Dylan you give me great memories of Manchester Piccadilly station. In 2019, when I was in Manchester, I bought donuts and an ice coffee from the Krispy Cream shop before catching my train to Leeds. The economy class itself didn't first interest me until you quoted the prices. At first, First class did appear better than economy. However, economy class for its cheap price was far better than first class in this case. Researching everyrhing is key. I can't wait to travel back to Manchester. When will you travel through Wales? I'm hoping to see the Welsh country side. Nice video.

I liked that a lot.the acceleration was quite cool.

That's the reason why they don't need tilt. Quicker to accelerate than the Pendolinos.

Hi Dylan, this is the second of your journeys that I have watched, it a journey which I am very familiar with, what a difference from 50 years ago! The journey from Palermo was fascinating, and I agree with you, land cruises are great. What camera are you using, I plan a land cruise or two in Europe next year who knows they might appear on RU-vid, imitation being the sincerest form of flattery! Keep up your enjoyable work.

Well, 110 mph is good enough I guess given the fact that you can travel at 125 mph for some time in the UK. Here in our little Czechia, we will be happy for that in 2022 or 2023 depending on when the railway to České Budějovice will be finished - the line will be partially 200 km/h but only for tilting trains, for classic trains only 180-185 km/h... BTW, design wise these trainsets look fantastic and also thanks for making longer reports, I really like this format. 😎

Geez, I remember taking a train from Glasgow to Manchester Airport and Carlisle was a stopping point. seemed like a long great train ride back then until I got on the BUDD car to the airport. My bowels have never been the same side to side nor my sense of time. LOL

I went on one of these trains about a week ago actually, its a very nice train but unfortunately with driver shortages and the train being really busy, plus other issues that day I was only able to travel one stop from Lancaster to Preston. Still if I get the chance to use this train again I will be very happy.

10:38 As BR learnt with the HST, automatic doors are easily prone to people abusing them or staying open when trains are crowded.
@DylansTravelReports
@DylansTravelReports 3 года назад
The HSTs use a pressure plate, that's why they are usually broken. I was more meaning a sensor like on the 800s.
@dickhelling3529
@dickhelling3529 3 года назад
@@DylansTravelReports Not only was the HST power supply inadequate for powered external doors, it was barely adequate to push even the internal doors, so if the door's track got a bit sticky - it stuck! But I'm not a fan of 'magic eye' sensors either since many people don't stand in the right place - and anyone who has ever seen the utter panic of a child trapped in the rattling, swaying inter-carriage connection because he/she is too small to be 'seen' by the 'eye' will surely agree that they ought to be entirely illegal there. Buttons are fine; even a child can manage them.

I like the use of light wood trim on the walls and tables. Plenty of bike and luggage space, and first class. The seats look a bit thin but other than that, these look decent. I can't wait to have a bash on one myself.
