Not saying you’re wrong because I myself am learning about coffee plants everyday, but the common belief is that you want to up pot slowly like 2” to 4” then 4-8” stepping up because the roots prefer to be tightly packed without being root bound.. sand in soil for drainage is great and also lava rock and basalt (lava rock sand) are important if you want it one day to bare fruit this plant needs the iron and micro nutrients that comes from lava rock specifically iron I like to add azomite... slightly acidic soil with feeding biweekly to monthly at 1/2 strength... obviously indoors it needs good amount of indirect sunlight but not direct sun unless slowly hardened off

Coffee likes being root bound, and you should only pot up 2" at a time; 12-18 mos apart. Also coffee does like light, but needs acclimated. They'll produce more cherries with more sun.

Good info. Thanks. I had one like yours, and it was thriving indoors until ants decided to drop anchor in the root system - and from inside the house! I had to get it outside, and tried to flush out the ants with water, but they wouldn't go! In that time I accidentally let it get direct sunlight, and now it needs the fried, brown leaves pruning out. You're right about the low maintenance bit, as it's recovered remarkably well, without much attention or water.

Thanks for this video! I just got my first coffee plant (from ikea of all places) and it really needs to be repotted ASAP (it’s about 8 inches tall in a three inch pot) so this was super helpful!

I keep getting lied to as to what 8 inches is. My arabica coffee plant is a solid 7.5 inches. I'm ready to transplant into palm/cactus soil. Has a lot of sand/perilite and rocks for adding oxygen for the roots. Keep up the good work!

Had one of these plants a few years ago and it died. The reason is I kept forgetting to water it, so I just a new one recently. I'm sure it will live this time and get big!

Question if I’d like to report my coffee plant it’s about 5 feet tall and I cut the roots a little bit or will it die? My second question is it has some white moss stuff on it I’ve tried getting it off with vinegar and it goes away for a while but it comes back what am I doing wrong?

I had a little one and the nursery told me to separate them, that it would die otherwise. I did, and have four trees, each about a foot high. They drop their lower leaves and form a canopy shape. I moved each up to the next sized pot, and the leaves are turning yellow overnight. I am distraught, two years of perfectly healthy plants and now they are dying. I don’t know what to do, if it’s too late?

Nicely explained, but I noticed you repotted the plant below the original soil depth in the previous pot. I always understood it always had to be the same depth. Hope you understand what I mean!

Good eye. Yes I did that on purpose. They were all still seedlings with the seed coat still attached to a couple of the sprouts. Most had fallen off but a couple were still on there. I have since added more soil to the new pot and they are doing just fine. Yes I would definitely agree with you. You should keep it at about the same level, but there are a couple of times where you can adjust the level! I'm glad you asked about that!

I bought one from a tree company and they told me to place in a south facing window or sun room... it's in the south facing window atm and seems to be okay... but after watching this I may need to rethink that!

So you can keep them in a south facing window but I would definitely scoot it back about 2 feet. They can have a little direct light possibly filtered in from the blinds periodically through the day, but make sure it isn't for an excessive amount of time. I keep mine outside during the growing season but I have it up on the porch where it will be protected from the sun during the hottest part of the day.

I finally figured out what my favorite plant IS! I’ve thought over all this time it was maybe a Ficus but no. Maybe a Money Tree. No! It’s an Arabica Coffee!! Dropping lots and lots of leaves all of the sudden! 😢. I have it in a 12” deep pot surrounded by ferns... The Arabic is now 20” tall. Any advice would be deeply appreciated. 💚

What do you do if some leaves are wilting or getting kind of wrinkling/crumpling? If that makes sense ? I'm homeschooling my daughter and she chose this plant as a science project, she's had it for almost a momth and it's been growing taller and the leaves look nice but some of them are getting crumpled ? She has kept it in indirect sunlight but sometimes it gets cold in her room. She waters it only when it's dry. We're going to be replanting it soon

It may just be your tap water even after leaving it out for some time for the chlorine and lead to evaporate it’s still harmful. I’ve grown to know this plant is very sensitive to tap water therefore I use rain water or distilled water. I’ve tried nearly everything to figure out what was happening come to find out it was the tap water. It rains where I live I collected a good amount and was able to use it on my coffee plant. My plant leaves looked much better after 3 feeding and it’s grown about 2” bigger.

My coffee plant seems to have been thriving but over the last couple of weeks several leaves have started turning brown and the rest aren’t the rich green they were. I water thoroughly about once a week or when the soil is dry beneath the surface. It’s still in the same small pot I bought it in but has reached about the 8 inch height now. Is this discolouring likely to be because it needs more room to grow?

I see a few stems, are those all separate trees? Can you separate them if you wanted too?

Yes you can and probably should separate them as early as possible. It's really just a personal preference. I got mine when they were pretty old so I know it would be a nightmare trying to separate them. But despite that, they're just as happy as ever. Hopefully it will stay that way!

Can you help me! I came back from a weekend vacation and my coffee plant is dropping. I water on Thursday before leaving and Sunday night when I came back the leaves were dropped and wrinkled. I touched the soil and it was dry. I water but I’m scared it’s going to die /(

Quick question: If the roots are brown, is that a bad sign? I just purchased this plant on Sunday, and repotted it into a small clay pot, but it doesn't look like water is coming through the drainage hole. The leaves look healthy, except on the bottom, a little more droopy and shriveled. Curious if i need to repot into a bigger pot, it's about 4 inches tall.

So I don't remember off the top off my head what color the trees roots were. Seems to me like they were a brownish, tan, somewhere in there. What you should be on the look out for are roots that are mushy or discolored from the rest, or roots that have a smell. Any of these would indicate the you have root rot. Now if the roots are dead they will be a lighter brown and maybe even white, and if they fall apart to the touch then they are probably dead. Check out thanksgivingcoffee.com they have a plethora of info on their site. I would definitely repot!

So I bought my coffee plant today. I don't want it to get big. I had no idea it could grow up to six feet. Other than pruning is there something I need to do to keep it a manageable size. I plan on putting it in a 6" pot and really don't want it higher than a foot. Thanks!

Nope, I assume you just mean the seed shell that the plants sprouted from? Unless the grower/seller did add some to be cute. I think it's the former though.

Isn't that way too big of jump in pot size? Most people recommend increasing 2-4in at a time

Do you know why most ppl say that? There are several reasons why. The most important one is because too much substrate can cause one to over water their plant and over watering more substrate takes way longer to dry out eventually leading to root rot. Another reason has to do with their root canopy and photosynthetic growth and nutrient uptake and so on. There's one or two more reasons too if I'm not mistaken, but as I said in this video this was something I wanted to do. I even said I don't recommend doing this unless you feel comfortable doing it with your plant and not to if you don't know what you are doing. Check out my newest video though. I have this same plant you're questioning about in it and as you can see for yourself, its doing just fine.

Hi... i bought a coffee plant about a month ago... the plant has stopped growing... it hasn't added one leaf since i got it... and today when i misted it, a fully healthy leaf fell off... please help... I'm keep the soil moist and i throughly water it ever 2 weeks... i keep the humidity at around 50% and temp around 70 degress... and it's kept in a spot with bright indirect sunlight... please help me!

Vidya Bk try upping the temp and misting more often, always keep the soil moist and keep it in the brightest room, with about 2 hrs of direct sunlight!

I had my coffee plants in same pot for 7 years. I recently split them apart, and put into 2 pots. I used good soil and added miracle grow fertilizer, and Epsom salt. The leaves are now drying up and crispy, falling off. It is sad. What can I do?

I've heard we should wait about 6 months to fertilize after repotting because there are plenty of nutrients in new soil. It might have gotten too many nutrients. Fertilizers contain mineral salts (as does the Epsom salts of course). The salts bind to the water, enlarging the molecules, so too much will cause the roots to not be able to absorb water, plus causes stress. You might be able to rescue it by "leaching". Slowly flushing the soil with at least 3 times the quantity of water the pot would hold if empty. Must be tepid temperature. There's a video about leaching too.

brown leaves indicate a potassium deficiency, coffee plants need lots of potassium. also my coffee plant success occurred once i added crushed volcanic rock dust to my soil, approx. 1/3 volume.

@@idahowild1a578 I have learned some more since a year ago, brown leaves are also from root rot or poor drainage. Coffee plants like being in small pots almost root bound. Having really good draining soil with organic materials. Add some volcanic dust but not a lot.

My coffee plant was growing pretty healthy, then after I transplanted it to a bigger pot, the leaves started falling and getting yellowish, and I don't know what was wrong. Then I transplanted back to a smaller pot, but bigger than the very first one. Now it looks weak, and the new leaves are more on the yellowish side.

Did you tamp down the soil when you repotted it? when you pour in new soil it traps air bubbles around the roots which wreak havoc on the plant. If not caught early it will kill the plant. If you didn't tamp it just press the soil down firmly all the way around the soil in the container. The soil should drop down about an inch or two. Once you finish that give it some more soil then water to make sure you rid the soil of any other bubbles that tamping may have missed. Some trees take years to fully recover from transplant shock. Some plants take a full year. You really should repott once and then wait at least two or three months before you transplant again. Since you've already done it a second time make sure you do nothing else to stress your plant out. 1) Don't give it too much direct light, bright shade would be the best until you start to see new growth. 2) Don't overwater. Keep a log if you need to help you be more consistent. Let the top inch of the soil dry before you give it more. I give mine a cup and a half about every 7-10 days. 3) Don't sit it next to a drafty window, door, or air vent. Random temperature fluctuations will mess up your tree. 4) Keep your humidity in check. They enjoy humidity around 50%. You can purchase a humidity and temperature gauge at lowes or home depot for about 12 bucks.

@@TheGreenAlchemistThank you for your advice. It will definitely help me a lot. I should have treated my plant with more patience. The soil is solid I think. One problem I didn't mention is the soil seems never get dry properly after the first repotting since last Oct while my other repotted coffee plant didn't have the same issue and has been growing very well. Then in the end I thought maybe the root is rotten. The big green leaves turned yellow and had brown spots and fell off one by one. That's why I repotted twice recently (which I shouldn't do). And I poured some mix of hydrogen peroxide with water (learnt on youtube). I feel bad that I tried so many methods and haven't made it get any better.

Neem oil for the leaves. 3/4" of sand on top of the soil for fungus gnats. The larva can not burro through sand.

I bought my daughter a coffee plant a few years ago and it was doing great -- until she got a puppy. Plant suffered a trauma so I took it back to try to revive it. Repotted it with perlite, sand and topsoil. It puts out new leaves but just as fast the older leaves turn Brown and fall off. I may have been over watering but I see some leaves being chewed on by what look to be fruit flies. Very worried because it is a member of the family. Any suggestions? Thank you!

So around this time of year it's normal to not see a lot of new growth and also some older leaves turning brown is pretty normal too. Though it sounds like yours is doing ok if it's putting out new growth. When you need to start to worry is if you are in your growing season(s) and you aren't seeing any new growth and your older leaves are changing colors fairly regularly, you may have a problem. It sounds like it could be from malnutrition or pests. Either way if you put new substrate in your plant within a year or so it should be ok. It may be resting now too so I wouldn't feed it unless your are in spring/summer. Feeding em in the fall and winter can seriously mess them up if done regularly. Now if you suspect something is eating on your plant and its leaves I would try and use some Monterey B.t. It's an organic way of killing off bad pests like worms or caterpillars etc. that are eating your plant while sparing the beneficial insects.

Have you repotted it since you gotten it? They will definitely need more organically rich, fertile soil than what they orginally came in. If you don't give the plants ample room to spread out in a larger container it will stunt their growth. They'll use up their finite amount of nutrients quick and then the plant will begin to kill off leaves so it won't require as much nutrients to exist. You could also increase the humidity around your plant to help fight browning leaves too. Brown leaves can also occur from being scorched. Watch the amount of light your plant is receiving also.

I'm sure it may come across that way, but don't forget it can be hard to talk in front of a camera for extended periods, even if it's about something you're passionate about. I've never claimed to be an expert in everything that I do.
