I'm going to Ireland next year, and I'm planning to ride my bike. It gives me absolute freedom, and I get to exercise. It's also free as soon as you get your equipment.

I don't know which countries do this other than France, but carpool is such a handy way to travel within France! It's a lot cheaper than trains, and it's just convenient for travel that's not TOO far away.

When I went to Ireland we decided to get a rental car. The car we got was standard, and out of my friends I'm the only one who knows how to drive standard. I thought everyone knew how to drive standard but after talking to my friends apparently in Canada it's not something that's usually taught when learning to drive. So if you're going to rent a car either know how to drive standard or you'll be paying more for an automatic.

I remember On our way to Africa, we stopped at France then we took a Taxi cab over to a different airport in Paris in order to fly down to Africa.

Hey Nadine! I was wondering if you could answear these questions for me: When did you first start traveling?/when did you decide to travel?, Did you go to university?, if so what did you study?, Did you know what you wanted to be when you were older?, How did you know to plan a trip? How did you afford it? What was it like traveling alone for the first time?, Did you travel with someone else to begin with?, What was it like to begin with (traveling)?, What are your future plans after you have finished traveling?, Thanks so much!! Also do you know any travel photographers I can get in touch with to ask them some questions?

I'm Canadian as you are and when I moved to the states, I was shocked at how trains arn't even part of the culture anymore. At least in Canada we have Via and stuff, US is just...driving or planes.

Mostly I love the trains, at least in Europe. Unfortunately a lot of the older ones that allowed you to open the windows have disappeared. I would also point out when looking for overseas airfares, be flexible by a week or so if possible. The difference of traveling a few days earlier or later can sometimes pay for those extra days you gain, or visa versa. I went to Italy four days later than planned and gained a entire week all within budget.

Lol only if you go to the places that are dangerous. I've been to Mexico before when I was younger to visit family and I know Spanish so I think I'm good.

I just completed a 6 week solo interrail trip and I got pretty sick of trains after a while. It saved me money but you also have to factor in reservations and stuff, my only night train actually cost me more than an extra night in the hostel would have. As always, the worst part of travelling is the actual travelling!
@heynadine
@heynadine 10 лет назад
Yea that's happened to me before, when plans don't quite work to plan. 6 weeks is a long time for trains!! I don't blame you for getting sick of them after awhile

I love trains, and for me, taking the train isn't just part of the trip, it IS the trip. I have made 14-day trips with 12 days of travelling in trains, just allowing a couple of hours in town to see something else than the landscape passing before your train window. I love it! But I'm a train geek, I understand not everybody is. And many train companies work in a similar way as airlines, giving big reductions if pre-booked weeks or months in advance. A full price ticket from Brussels to Paris would cost €99, but if you book 3 months in advance, you can find prices from €29. So do your research at least partly from home, sometimes a rail pass like Eurail or Interrail isn't such a bargain as it might seem. Night trains aren't always the cheapest option, but even then, they do make sense, as you sleep while moving to your next destination. I don't mind very much to be on a train for a very long time, but even I prefer to be a night sleeping on a night train over a whole day in a TGV.

CompassionIsWeakness If I may answer as well, it depends. Generally, for Western and Northern Europe, I recommend an Interrail (or Eurail for non-Europeans), especially for minus 26. For Eastern Europe and most of Southern Europe, buy it on the spot (or if possible, via the local railways website, if you need a reservation), especially for local trains. Often, these tickets are dirt cheap, e.g. approx. 15 euro from Poprad to Bratislava in Slovakia if you don't have a discount card, a trip of over 300 km. If you're under 26, a 3 days pass for Slovakia costs 57 euro. If you're 26+, it's 121 euro. It just doesn't add up. Do be careful, sometimes, you have to be able to print the ticket before travelling in a ticket machine, like in Hungary (they're working on their website, but you can't print your own ticket at home yet). And of course, there are no machines in e.g. Prague or Vienna, so you can't buy a ticket on the MÁV website for travelling to Hungary, only from Hungary.

CompassionIsWeakness Well, if you're into railway travel, the site of seat61 is one of the best to start with. But I agree, it's not easy to have a complete source of information, it's a puzzle to put up everything together from all the different sites.

Going "down undah" in late September by way of Air New Zealand. I think it was a pretty decent price, maybe around 800 US dollars. Do you by any chance have any recommendations for cheap places to stay in Melbourne? Thanks.

Busses are great. If you have a wifi connection you can get info on routes and timetables on line. I have to disagree with you on unlicensed taxis. It's not worth the risk especially for a woman. They don't have the right insurance and the driver could be a sexual predator or even a rapist. OK, I know you took one in China but you were safe with a woman driver. Even so I warrant she was not insured, and in the event of an accident you would not have been covered.

In New York city we have the result identifiable taxis and ones that look like town cars. But the unmarked taxis she is talking about are usually owned by smaller businesses with a few extra people working for them with their own cars because they can't get the town cars. We also have $1 vans which looks pretty sketchy and my advice on then is to not use them at night out if you don't see any locals getting into them.
