I'm a UK guy old enough to remember these when they were new, never been a fan of the Spitfire, they were a rebodied Triumph Herald, the swing axle rear was not the best idea..... the Jensen Healey however is a very different thing , friend had one,around 1980, a great drive and massive fun around our local lanes, That one needs to be saved

I remember being part of a 'convoy' of these (I was in a Jensen Healey) we drove them from central London out to the docks where they got shipped to Sweden I believe.

@@TheQuestionableGarage Can you soak the cylinders and see if they free up? Just for the heck of it? I mean if any one frees up maybe it will run? Lots of question marks, but a lot of people would watch those old engines spitting some fire!
@russelljacob7955
@russelljacob7955 22 дня назад
@@vaibhavdlv A free cylinder does not mean a running cylinder. I actually cringe when I watch people even trying to turn a sitting engine like that over. A fantastic way to destroy a servicable or rebuildable engine. Even if it starts and runs, just takes any small contaminant to turn the block into a boat anchor. Should never try to turn an engine over without at minimum pulling the heads. Especially if it is an unsealed engine like that.

I had British sports cars in the 1960s and 1970s. I had a 59 Austin Healey Sprite - and a 1963 Austin Healey 3000. I owned a 1965 Triumph TR4 and a 1960 Morris Minor two door coupe with a souped up 1300cc Austin Healey Sprite engine. I had a 1967 MGB fastback and a 1984 Jaguar XJS V12. I was a little slip of a girl and fit into them nicely. I weighed no more than 118 lbs and I'm 5'6" tall. They were lots of fun and got lots of notice... And lots of speeding tickets. I owned motorcycles then as well - and I still have them to this day! One is a 1953 BSA A10 650 cc Golden Flash Sport Model and the other is a 1969 Honda CRR 450 racing bike. ( they are not for sale ) The British cars were notorious for not starting or quiting in traffic... they were finickey and tempermental. Lucas Electrical systems are the spawn of Lucifer! Something was always shorting out or burning. Back then, I kept the local sports car dealers part department and aftermarket parts suppliers in business. Today I drive a Lincoln MKX. It is comfortable, quiet, smooth running and handles great. As neat as those old sports car were - I do not want one today!
@user-lw7mw1cj5k
@user-lw7mw1cj5k 24 дня назад
Lucas was indeed the Prince of Darkness for electrical wiring. I know a guy who reworks British cars by re-crimping ALL the pins in the connectors, sometimes replacing the connectors completely. Then he starts to work on getting the cars running and driving. I've owned 2 Jags and they are expensive to maintain and eat lots of parts. Both were pre-Tata cars. Now I drive a Ford Fiesta ST which has a British engine a French 6 speed and was assembled in Mexico. It has 180,000 miles on the clock. Regular oil changes to keep the turbo happy are a must!

Back in the early ‘70s I helped crew a Spitfire. We campaign all over Florida. We were regional champs the two years I did it. We only won one race but we went to every race always finished well and collected the points. Lots of fun. Also crewed a MGBT at Daytona 24 Hours broke a valve 11 hours in. Went to Sebring but were not fast enough to qualify. Sure had a lot of fun. Definitely a fun little car.

God, I want that Triumph so bad. I've always loved spitfires, but never been able to afford one, and the older I get, the more expensive they get. Have the chassis sandblasted and powder coated, restore the body British racing green, and swap in an NA K24 with a BMW trans and the flying Miata bell housing. But I don't even know how I'd get it up to Maine.

To a small British car nut you have a gold mine. The Spitfire is restorable, it worth $2-3K to the right person. All the panels and doors also have value. Save as much as you can. There is a market for all of it. I’m restoring a 76 MG Midget. I have it down to the shell and FB Market Place, EBay and all the FB groups are were I go for information and parts. Good luck with sourcing.a place to sell or even give the parts and cars.

That looks like an awesome day tearing that thing down and recovering all those little treasures in that trailer. One thing I think I would have done differently, just knowing metal and all, I would have had the gas axe out there to tear into that structure to chop it into small pieces with ease. I realize it probably wasn't one of those days for you guys, and it did go down nicely, but I have zero patience when it comes to getting to the prize inside!

Back in the early 90’s I drove a tow truck for a tow/shop business owned by a Polish immigrant that specialized in European vehicles. He taught me the joke, why do the English drink warm beer? Because they own Lucas Refrigerators. Lucas also made electronic’s for many European vehicles that were less than reliable. His favorite was MG, and restored and upgraded quite a few while I worked there.

As a child of the 70s i must have passed the factory that made your spitfires many times here in Coventry, as I had several uncles and aunties that lived in canley where these were built. Unfortunately the whole car industry in Coventry is no more, after being Britain's motor city for most of the 20th century, all that can be found now are a few road names, sculptures and an old working men's club named after triumph.

Believe me Jared in their day they were not really considered fast!! Bring British and if that era I remember them well. They were not much used for racing because the handling was iffy, the back suspension would jack up and spin the car. They also suffered from weak back axles and poor main bearings. However they WERE fun very pretty with their Michelotti designed body and very easy to work on. Definitely worth saving. The separate chassis was unusual for that time too.

You might actually fit. The Spitfire is much bigger inside than a Spit. I'm 6-4, my dad restored a '63 Spit in the late 70's and a good friend of ours had a 70 something Austin Healey Sprite, the twin of the Midget. I easily fit in the Spit without even needing to move the seat back all the way, but couldn't wedge myself into the Sprite.

If I happened across a couple free British cars that were fairly solid I would consider retro mod rebuilds. I would have to research what a total restored Jensen-Healey or Triumph goes for and what parts would cost me before I went resto mod but it seems like most hover around the 20K price for some nice ones. Sometimes cars like this can be worth more in parts than a whole car that needs a ton of work. A small V8 in either car would be cool even a newer 4cyl duel turbo set up. Thinking these were supposedly raced there might be some rare after market racing parts hiding in the engine or laying around in the trailer.

I'll give you that this escapade is HIGHLY questionable, nigh on a waste but you are at the very least true to your word and you are a fucking real mechanic. I appreciate it and - good onya. I keep watching your stuff - 30 plus year plus pro diesel mechanic ( but not just diesel stuff) and I get something out of every one of your videos. Cheers. Sharing is caring!! Ya know that most people (non mechanic) don't even get what your talking about with the LEXUS DI vs included Port inj Thang. But you still do it anyway - perhaps they will understand one day. Awesome and no criticism at all - you have more patience and blind generosity of spirit than me.
