In this video we are working on old Trash Fire International, the fire truck that has coolant coming out of the exhaust. Discussing how horrible of a design it is and why I hate Internationals.

Nice to see the train one show up here! That happened back around 2010, the unit in question is a General Electric model C44-9W numbered IC 2699 and owned by Canadian National (in case anyone couldn't guess the paint scheme lol). This locomotive type is powered by a V16 GE 7FDL engine, a turbocharged four-stroke common rail design with a displacement of about 10.95 litres (668 CI) per cylinder. This particular engine is rated for 4400 traction HP at 1050 rpm in a locomotive. It's somewhere in between the Cat 3500 and 3600 series for a size comparison. They are fairly modular engines, the big piece on the ground was a 'power pack' (a liner and head, each cylinder has its own individual head), which then allowed the piston and possibly rod to be thrown up and out of the engine. I don't remember the exact cause of this failure, but it was probably something around the head bolts/studs breaking or working their way out. This particular unit was repaired and returned to service fairly quickly, and operated normally until being wrecked in a derailment just north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in January 2019. As it happens the derailment was caught by someone's dashcam at a crossing.

Changing the power assembly itself is a pretty easy job. I just wonder how much damage was done to the block when the liner came out plus the con rods

Great tip from the viewer about testing the EGR cooler using the airlift. I have seen at least 90 of these fail. Loss of coolant with no visible leaks is the first clue. High levels of Potassium, Sodium and Silicon in the oil sample are also a positive indication. Those will show up even before glycol. This EGR cooler should live. They FINALLY got a design that lives. BUT!! There is another problem that lurks on these engines. Take an oil sample if you still have the old oil. Yeah, I know it will have coolant contamination. What your looking for are high aluminum and iron levels. Like above 200ppm. There is a "delamination" issue with the aluminum air intake pieces. Will wipe the cylinders.
@Josb_Bluebird2143
@Josb_Bluebird2143 Год назад
If one of those engines is run severely low on coolant, blowing a coolant hose, for example. You can guarantee that EGR cooler will start leaking. I work on school buses, and the number of stories I have heard about EGR coolers is crazy. We had a 2013 IC RE that the driver had a coolant hose pop, and she left it running with no coolant in it. By the time the mechanics showed up, the temp Guage was pegged on hot. They put coolant in it only for it to start pouring out of the exhaust.

Yep everytime one of these coolers pops on a rear engine school bus, it bends #4 rod, has to be something to do with how high the cooling package is mounted higher than engine, don't ask me how I know, seen hundreds, lol. Made hell of a good living for years thanks to Maxxforce.

Not that you'll ever see one again but....what I've done to check those is a quick easy test.remove the dog house and unhook the exhaust side of the cooler,get the motor up to temp and then pressurize the system,if it's bad you'll see coolant coming out the exhaust side of the cooler.

@Downstriker559
@Downstriker559 Год назад
So some insight I can provide that can hopefully be useful. The EGR coolant tubes are designed to be pushed into the front structure so they can be removed. The funny thing is you actually placed the turbocharger oil supply line in the correct place, the garbage. THEY ARE A SINGLE USE COMPONENT THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED EVERY TIME THEY ARE REMOVED AS PER NAVISTAR. I also suspect you have an issue with the crankcase breather because I've never had oil come out when I've removed the drain lines so maybe something you need to look into. The turbocharger nuts torque to 52 ft/lbs. As for pressure testing the EGR cooler it gets pressure test @55psi and should not leak down more than 5psi over 10 minutes. If you need any help or service info I can gladly help you with that. Keep up the good videos Josh!

Every new truck is like this. Knowing a bunch of people in EMS I can tell you first hand they have a budget that can't be surpassed per vehicle. The heavy rescue at one of the stations didn't have rear brakes for 10 years till I had asked if the proportioning valve was connected 😂😂 anyways it went back to the shop, came back with working rear brakes and everyone had to retrain on the truck to be able to drive it. And they are exempt from state safety inspections. As for emissions, they run high idle when working and drive foot to floor so...

As someone who's getting rid of 3 of 4 internationals in my fleet, and replacing them with Anything But Navistar, I can confirm that their trucks are bad. Their dealers are hit and miss too, and they like to force repairs as "dealer only". I'm surprised they're still in business.

At the dealership im at, we have the "egr cooler tester," which is a 55-gallon drum full of water. Cap the exhaust side and submerge. If you see bubbles coming out, it's done. Not 100% testing as some may fail at a higher temp or pressure but still quick and easy to test regardless.

Just a couple tips to make that job easier from an international dealer tech. if you remove the cowl tray, fender and hvac box it gives you alot better access to remove the turbos and cooler and really adds about 5 more minutes of disassembly. I never remove the "dog house" to access those coolers. on the chassis that have the lower mounted cab, i just jack up the one side of the cab for access. and remove the studs from the back of the cooler and leave the cross over tube in place

I remove passenger cab mount and jack cab up. The loosen engine mount bolts and jack engine up. Cooler will come out much easier.

When I take them squeeze clamps off I spray them with some wd 40 pb blaster or something with oil so the clamps will slide easier

I'm glad you're enjoying this international engine. Maxxforce engines suck. I'm sorry Maxxforce 13 and Maxxforce 7 suck to work on.

Should the return had been holding much oil. Could that been the reason of the failed turbo. Upper turbo.

Just out of curiosity where can coolant be introduced into the exhaust stream besides the EGR cooler? If it’s from the head gasket leak surely that would be vaporized upon combustion wouldn’t it? Especially if none of the other symptoms of head gasket failure are present. Not looking to be argumentative, I always enjoy your videos I’m just trying to be educated.
