Last year I managed to save around $9000 in only 4 months from cutting out a lot of extra expenses, had almost no social life and worked 50-60 hour weeks......Saving is very achievable, but only those who truely do want to travel will do it.

My favorite way to save money for travel is to set aside aluminum cans and plastic bottles and recycle them at a center. I usually get about $35-40 for 4 trash bags of cans and around $15-20 for a large trashcan full of plastic. Also, save spare change you get back/find in a piggy bank/ canister and turn it in to a coinstar machine. My canister usually gets me $30-40. Happy Travels! :)

Kristen Malkemus wtf in France we have to pay to recycle. I litteraly have to give money to the public trash can so that it will open...( plus I pay taxes for my personnal non recyclable trash)

I managed to save money between my last overseas trip to Korea in February and re-book a flight overseas back to Korea for October for 33 days which I booked in May this year, and will have close to $4000 saved for spending money by the time I go. I pretty much have no social life, working 30-40+ hours per fortnight, and cutting out on SO MANY EXPENSES, because most of the things I wanted, I just thought "I can just buy when I go over there."For those who are willing to do anything to travel, LEARN THAT THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SACRIFICES TO MAKE. But keep in mind "it's worth it in the end."

omg. You're right about Starbucks or even Costa! One latte is £3.90-ish!! And paying for a lunch everyday! I'm in secondary school and lunches in the cafeteria are waay more expensive than packing a sandwich and a fruit, and a bottle of water every day. There's your lunch! For a fraction of the price you spend daily/weekly/monthly!

I feel like I'm missing out on so much, especially when i know I'm meant to be spreading my wings and seeing the world. They say your 20s are the best time to travel so I don't want to be waiting them away. However because of my financial irresponsibilities, I have to work on paying off all my bills before I would do that.

I need to stop dipping into my savings haha. I'm normally really good with it until my parents ask to borrow money. I'm fine with that, they've spent SO much money on me, and my education, that them borrowing $300 from me is nothing. They always pay me back. The problem is, once I go in there and touch it I find myself rationalizing nonsense purchases haha. I really need to work on that.

Good tips, Except for the credit card bit. Consider those 24%APR deals. Your trip just got a quarter more expensive because you couldn't wait and save. More stress, less travel, less fun. With all the great before mentioned tips, there really is no excuse to go into debt for a holiday. Flip side of that, GET OUT OF DEBT. All that money you are no longer paying on loans, you now have for travel! =D

Hey Nadine! Thanks for this video and the other part! Very helpful :) I am going to Italy in august this year and while I've booked my flights, I am still working on saving money for a rail pass and for hostels/B&Bs. But planning the expenses out in segments has made it much easier! One tip that I think is great (that I read in Readers Digest a few years ago) is SAVING $5 bills. Each time I get a $5 bill, I put it in a jar. It adds up fast! I was able to save $500 for a trip to see my grandparents last year. But it does have to have a specific reason behind it - I've tried saving the $5s when I'm just trying to save for the purpose of saving - and I have rarely gotten above $100 without digging in to! So having a specific goal for the money really helps!

I usually just locum and take on extra shifts, especially out of hours, weekends and nights where the pay is more. I also pack lunch, bring my own jar of coffee to work and looking for deals when grocery shopping. I also drive a hybrid car to cut running costs a bit

That's really good advice, Nadine. The thing is, I think a lot of people will find it too hard to be as single minded as you are, but I hope they can because that's how you achieved your aim to travel the world.

Great ideas... I have found most folks complain about "you have to be rich" to travel and they are too lazy to even try. They want everything given to them.. If they go to Hawaii and find a room for $100 a night they want a free rent a car and meals included.. Or they complain how someone else is getting rich of them. They have no concept of reality.

Girlfriend, telling people to take insurance off their cars is TERRIBLE advice, as is taking out credit cards! Sure, giving up Starbucks and getting a side gig is good advice. I'm not saying you didn't have some good points. But skipping insurance and taking out credit are risky A.F. and could lead people to financial ruin.

Great advice Nadine. I hope that some viewers will be able to reply with their resulting adventures. :) When you have enough money to buy the airfare, buy the ticket with a credit card that gives you purchase protection and some reward like cash back. Then pay it off right away so that you don't pay any interest charges. ;) Playing the playas can be efficient.

Great video! Quick question, when do you recommend starting to save up for travels? I'm 14 and want to travel a lot one day, particularly after graduation. [PS I love your name! ;)]
@heynadine
@heynadine 10 лет назад
hahah I love your too!! I would recommend saving up now. The longer you have, the easier it is to save. I would recommend getting a savings account and putting a little aside every month and NOT touching it :P you'll easily be able to save up for a massive trip after graduation if you start now :)
@NadineAnnabelle
@NadineAnnabelle 10 лет назад
thank you so much! your videos keep me optimist and realistic when my family say I will never travel if I don't get a job now and think realistically that it will cost a fortune. your videos and experience tell me that I can do it if I am money savvy! :)
@jessicashowalter6475
@jessicashowalter6475 10 лет назад
Nadine Annabelle Traveling IS definitely realistic! It is possible for everyone! It just takes some time and planning :D I think far too many people put things/dreams aside (such as travel) because they think "well it's not realistic right now, but someday..." The problem is that they will continue to think that - and thus a lot of those dreams never do happen. So stay optimistic! There is plenty of time to save and to plan! Having an after school job the last two years of high school can really help - as long as it works with your school schedule. My brother did some backpacking in Europe after his HS graduation. He received a scholarship for college - and was able to use his money from his after school job to put towards his travels. So keep those dreams and trust in the universe!

I know this video is 6 years ago but I got a question. I wanna go to New York in summer 2021 round July or August. I’m a student so I still go to school and pay school money, I can work as a nurse in a care home that pays the best where I live as a student, i don’t really love working as a nurse for a job when I’m older for now as a student is it good, as a nurse u get around (if u have a degree where I live for that) $€10,71 in a hour, a normal job at a supermarket/clothingstore is around $€4/5 in a hour. For students or people who graduated already but still traveled when they were a student, how did you do that (because i do gotta save money for school the year after so schoolyear 2021/2022) I wanna go more often after I did graduate the study I’m gonna start in this year September, I spend a lot of money on food, my money Dont go to makeup, sometimes I do buy shoes/clothes but I do a long time with shoes/clothes, like 1/2/3 years. Depends especially with my jeans, does someone got some tips for me?
