We are on a race against hurricane season in our sailboat down the west coast of Florida - for this leg of the journey we stay inshore from Clearwater, FL to Gulfport, FL and pass under a few bridges, enjoy the Florida houses, and moor up to our first mooring ball. And of course, we brace for another thunderstorm on our sailboat.
Hope you enjoy!
- Matt
SV Cadence
PS - this is part 1 of our west coast Florida travels, and part 2 will release middle of the week instead of next weekend!

Who Are We?
We're the Fosters, and we just sold our house , purchased a sailboat, Cadence, a Catalina 387, and sailed away from land. We're on a journey to minimize our life, learn to live on a sailboat, and travel the oceans.
In 2019, Matt quit his public education career of 15 years, and went full-time building his own business. Olivia is ready to explore the world, and so am I...and now, we're on a mission to Maine!
We're sharing this journey with you in hopes that it'll bring you a smile, provide something helpful, and maybe give a bit of inspiration to live life on your terms - to explore your world.
Join us as we take this journey into the unknown, and share some laughs along the way.

Great video. Didn't know mooring balls were associated with a marina. Keep sharing more of your day-day life, it is interesting to follow along with you on this amazing journey!

Thanks! We have the second part of the Gulfport story coming out mid-week. :)

Matt, I've been told the best way to tie to a mooring ball is 2 lines like you have but each goes from the boat cleat, through to line on the ball, and then back to the cleat on the same side. That way you don't have a knot in the water that you cannot see and it's much faster and easier to release when you are done.

Great advice!

When you are ready to leave the ball, chose your clear path, ideally forward to starboard or forward to Port, alternatively back to starboard or back to Port, least back straight, and never forward. Releasing one of the 2 lines to the ball will swing the boat such that the ball is on the other side where you are still tied on. So if your clear path is ahead to starboard (or aft to Port), release and stow the starboard line first. Easier for the person on the foredeck and sets the person at the helm up for success.

Enjoyed the video! Seeing the daily life adventures of living on a boat is just as exciting as out on the seas. You all are doing a great job and having fun on the journey!

How did you like Gulfport? I had a friend there with a sailboat once.
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 2 года назад
Gulfport was a cool town. We spent three days, and wished we could have been there a full week.

Hey~ what’s your auxiliary diesel set up? are those 20L cans on deck, or smaller? Planning to cruise in 18 months & we have similar tankage I believe.
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 2 года назад
Yes, those are 20L (5gal) and we have 36 gallons of tankage built into Cadence. It fuels a 40hp Yanmar and gives us the ability to forget about fuel for a long time! Or for about 600 nm of motoring.

@@TheFosterJourney Marinebeam has the 2Talk headsets in a pair with a case for $299. I also recommend their LED tri-color light for $94.95. It fits the existing fixture, single contact bayonet bulb BA-15S. It is also a dusk to dawn anchor light and will flash SOS. Enjoy your journey! We are preparing our second C387, Partager for cruising from Pensacola this season to the Keys and Bahamas. Hope to see you out there!

Ouch... that mooring ball pickup was painful to watch. Im sure you realize now thats not how you tie up to a ball...
@TheFosterJourney
@TheFosterJourney 2 года назад

I guess it depends on your perspective. Not everyone has a house on the beach with sails on it. The rest of us enjoy our vicarious tour of boat life. Until we can have the same experience. And also enjoy it.

Sometimes, it's those simple days on the sailboat that make it all worth it... especially after seeing some of the storms we went through 👍⛵
