Those who traveled to India amist the Canada India row or who got their recent Canada citizenship were worried about their travel as evisa takes' time. In this video I am sharing first hand account of those who travelled with India passport, surrendered passport in India and then obtained exit visa. Hi, i have a quick question on the surrender certificate and exit visa from india. Now that e-visas are started, cant we apply for e-visa from india instead of exit visa?

I dont wanna take any risk as i am travelling to India on November 30 I am still waiting for my CAD passport, am not sure what should i do? Plz guide me, should I apply for Surrender certification here in Canada? Can i get e visa? Before surrender? Can i travel on India passport? Without any issues? i applied this recently. After getting my canidian passport, i travelled to india with both passports, at indian immigration, i just showed them indian passport(they didn't bother asking my status in canada) Then i surrendered indian passport at Regional Passport Office Now, im applying entry-visa in india, after that im applying OCI in india

Can you please share the link that mentions the 30 day grace period and that we can travel usinh Indian passport after obtaining Canadian citizenship. The official notice on CGI mentions one cannot do so after the citizenship is obtained. Thank you

Hi Chintan, it’s possible to surrender passport in India however I haven’t come across anyone so far who initiated OCI process in India.

Can you please give details of applying exit permit from india after surrendering indian passport? Exit permit online application is for people who entered india using valid visa but over stayed and need to exit the country. In the online exit permit application it is asking for visa type and number? So this case people who are entering india using indian passport without visa and then surrendering indian passport in india will not have visa or number which is need for exit permit? Would be helpful if someone clarifies this. Thanks

Hi as far as I know only resident Indian whose spouse are foreigner can initiate through FRRO or minor who are foreigner. Can you please keep me updated if you get through with the application in India

Hi it has varied. The earliest I have known is 5-7 days for entire process(total timelines) to 14-20 days. Fees you can check the FRRO website

Hi good question. I will have to find out from those who travelled. By logic as long as you have valid travel document and name matches airlines will not have any issues as you would have cancelled passport and Canada passport while returning. Can you also find and let me know?

Please fill your details as mentioned in video with FRRO and upload surrender certificate instead of visa and mention details of firm travel plan and it should be good

Thanks for sharing this info. Would it be possible for us to apply OCI from India as soon as we get the surrender certificate in India? In addition to that, should our ticket be to Canada or can it be anywhere in the world while submitting the ticket for an exit visa? Appreciate your direction. Last question - Is it possible for me to surrender my Indian passport as soon as I receive the Canadian citizenship certificate instead of waiting for the Canadian passport to arrive? I am asking this because, in the surrender application checklist they have stated the following, "Foreign / Canadian Passport: Copy of photo page and observations (if any) of your current valid foreign / Canadian passport. If you have not applied Signature Checklist for Toronto jurisdiction only.Ver 7.3 for your passport, please write a written declaration to the Consulate General of India with an explanation of the same." I am not sure if anyone submitted just the certificate and surrendered the passport. If anyone did, need help in what time of declaration you did. I see this would save some time. Appreciate any insights on this too.

Get OCI process done once you are out of India When you exit destination could be any place you just need to have exit visa after surrendering passport Unfortunately surrender certificate is required for OCI processing

[URGENT] Hi, did anyone travel via British Airways using this exit permit and all? I called up the airlines to update the passport information and they said they cannot be allowed to board using a different passport for half a journey?

I am no expert but by logic if you have name, date of birth, address consistent in booking and all what is changing is passport airline should not have problem as long as you have cancelled India passport and exit visa. Helpline usually have entry level individuals who don’t put logic. So far I have not heard this from those who travelled with two passport

Surrender within 3 months without penalty if you have not travelled. If you have travelled on Indian passport the penalty has varied. Please check others comments

Hi not sure if more than 90 days but with confirmed return ticket (45 days) someone did get the exit visa and person travelled after a month of citizenship

How will you enter the country you intend to come? Will you have the visa? Also not sure how the penalty will be to travel with India 🇮🇳 passport when you have another country passport. Only someone who experienced this can tell you

Hi no one was asked so far who recently went. Once you are in India make sure you follow other process. Cancelling voter id was a process which those who landed in Mumbai and Delhi had to go through

Finally we completed our India trip of 2 months (mid Oct to mid dec) after Canadian citizenship and travelling on Indian passport (due to evisa closure). Took stay visa (x1- entry permit) from FRRO as my stay was longer. Had to pay penalty and visa fees even after travel within 3 months of grace period. No logic is applied and its like take it or leave it. 3 weeks of struggle in getting the entry visa. I had to cancel my voter id, I had to get my father (aged 75+yrs) to remove my name from Ration card and all sort of mental harassment for getting visa issued. Too many applications to write for getting entry visa. Now since evisa is opened up, everyone is lucky that they dont have to go through this level of torture and anxiety.

@@canadatriedandtestedoriginal This was in Mumbai. Few others also went through similar ordeal which is totally uncalled for. While applying OCI, consulate or Indian mission doesn't ask applicants to cancel voter registration and other nationality documents. But within Indian if one applies, they have a different process.

FRRO charged us 26k each for exit permit. Please be aware that within 15days of landing if you apply for exit permit you don't incur any penalty

In few others they applied for passport immediately on getting the citizenship certificate and surrendered India passport in an India. While surrender did happen different experiences have been shared so please 🙏 see what is in best interest for you. You have option to get express passport if you have short travel (within 3 days) at additional cost

So to this question, surrender certificate is mandatory for even exit visa and I see potentially get stuck. Best is the apply for evisa for India travel and have OCI processed separately to avoid any issues

Hi, I came india with canadian passport ans i am within my 90 days of acquiring Canadian citizenship. I was denied the surrender certificate at RPO Kolkata because my indian passport was issued in ottawa and not india. My original indian issued passport expired and this was my second passport issues from canada ( ottawa). The RPO deputy director said i can only surrender this from canada. I asked them how do i exit india now? He said to ask Canadian government which doesn't help of course. I am returning to canada on feb 6 in qatar airways. How do i present this to immigration at airport as I can't apply for exist visa as i dont have surrender certificate

Hi by logic no one stays stationary and moves cities. They should accept the passport and process this internally. Best is to write to MEA on twitter or their email id. Google it.

For you to exit on Canada passport you need exit visa. Kolkata has been smooth so far. This is the first instance I am hearing. For one individual they processed in between Durga puja

MEA never responded and I went to the airport as per my departure. The airlines cleared me after hearing my side and gave me boarding pass however immigration stopped me. They told me to talk to FRRO and come back when I have exit permit. I told them I couldn't get it as I was not able to surrender. Next day I went to FRRO in person and they told me to write a letter why I was not able to surrender and attach in the application ( online) in place of the surrender certificate. The rest was easy. They issued me the exit permit in 24 hours and I rebooked my flight ($$$) and back to Canada now. However I was confused with the exit permit as it was written that I have submitted my Indian passport and this is one time relaxation for my travel from India. At the Kolkata airport they asked me again if I have submitted my Indian passport to which I told them as per exit permit I have submitted. Fortunately they didn't ask me further to submit a surrender certificate and allowed me to exit. Now I will deal with BLS and see where it goes ( I have an entry stamp on it).

We can apply for e-visa. Processing time is 74 hours. No need to travel with two passports
