Best video on the game. I wanted to do a video talking about this but didn't really fit in with my channel. But not enough people gave this game a chance.

Though be fair to reviewers who have finished the games, have played the previous games or haven't, and still didn't like the game. It's good to have different fair reviews that explain their points properly. Just like how different people like different things, different reviewers can help different people. If the reviewer's taste matches to the viewer, then their review could help them buy a game. Video games are an expensive hobby after all. Also there is a reason why Suda games are niche

My wife never played a NMH game but she loved his overtop personality and forced me to buy her a a copy for her. She watched a few videos and she's really looking foward to playing as Badgirl. Now she wishes I still had my 360 so we could play Lolipop chainsaw lol. I loved Travis Strikes again. I even kinda made a response video to the clickbaiting youtubers acting like this is the worst thing Suda has ever made but then praising killer is dead and lolipop chainsaw which both reviewed way worse comparatively.

Thank you for this video. It's felt like too many people have it out for this title and don't want to give it a chance when it feels like the kind of return to form from a grasshopper title I've been wanting. Hoping more people come around to it.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm not proud of it, because being this isn't usually a good thing, but i'm a Suda fan boy and I was genuinely butt hurt by the hate when gameplay was shown and when it released. The criticisms made no sense and sounded like typical knee jerk gamer bullshit from people who thought NMH 1 & 2 was masterpieces, which they aren't. Jim Sterling being the absolute worst I've seen. your response to those criticism were brilliant!

i got a little enraged by so many people shitting on this game unreasonably when it's so clear that they have no real experience with no more heroes or suda as a director. imo it holds pretty much all of the same charm and is a very solid continuation of the series, despite some repetitive gameplay. hell, i dont even think the gameplay is that repetitive; it changes its environments up enough to keep things fresh, sorta like the first nier game and its bosses, which is why it can be my personal favorite game of all time. great video. cant wait for the next deadly individualism. btw, that series was the final nail that got me to get the steam version of killer7, and i cant thank you enough for that oh yeah, and travis for smash!

I agree with you on addressing the criticisms, except for one. The "If this sells then we'll make NMH3". I get that if a game is popular they'll want to make a sequel and I can understand how some fans of other games have been burned in the past by this promise. I mean, look at Beyond Good and Evil. We were told if the HD version of that, released all the way back in 2011, sold well, we'd get 2. 2 was teased. Ubisoft forgot about it. Teased again. And while we were shown something it didn't seem very...well, beyond good and evil-y. It was more one of those Ubisoft sandboxes with a BGE facepaint. But whatever. I agree that if an HD version does well, that'll be a good sign to make another game in the series. But Travis Strikes Back isn't really like the other NMH games. I mean, if you like NMH because of the fun light saber-like combat that the wii gave you then this game isn't really going to do that for you. And, honestly, that was a big feature for me to get the game on the wii. One of the first thoughts to pop into my mind after seeing the wii controller was "Oh man, a Star Wars lightsaber game would be awesome on that" and while we never really got that Star Wars game we dreamed of, No More Heroes was definitely a good starting point for the idea. The 2nd game released too early to take advantage of wii motion plus but a switch version, considering all the extra tech in its motion controls, that could be really interesting. I just worry that the devs will look at this game and think "well, this didn't sell well so NMH3 probably wouldn't." and that's a shame. It's like how Capcom kind of shelved Bionic Commando after the remake was terrible. But the 2D versions were great. More games like that would be welcome. It's like how Castlevania really shone in 2D whereas the 3D games were just meh at best. Just because the game series didn't do well with one kind of gameplay, doesn't mean it won't with another. That's the point I'm trying to make. I know, I talk too much.
@Dreamboum
@Dreamboum 5 лет назад
I think Suda is just being honest with you. He didn't make Travis Strikes Again to fund No More Heroes 3. He made the game because he genuinely wanted to, and to put the series in the right track. But at the end of the day if it doesn't sell well he's not going to convince any investors to put their money in a sequel. Suda can't grow money on trees yet, he's just being honest with the reality of the game industry. Something he criticizes at length in Travis Strikes Again.

Thank you! Finally a proper review of this game! And I’m so glad there’s more people who enjoy it than I. I’m personally glad I pre-ordered this game. The otaku assassin is back baby! It’s a celebration of classic game designs. Yeah this game has its flaws but I still like it. And I hope NMH1&2 make it on the switch and Suda continues his “Let’s punk!” Philosophy. The games linear but not too long. Life is destroy over stays it’s welcome but the game knows it’s horrible.

Now,hear me out..He should be..in smash. Let me explain, he is stylized,He has a cool weapon and a move-set. And If he is in smash he could cause a interest in the game. In context,he being in smash makes sense ina forth wall breaking way. (he is Nintendo deadpool in a sense). Then,sell no more heroes one and two in a bundle. At a reasonable price. and for buying both games they get the Travis DLC for smash for free. This would not only boost sells of no more heroes But the idea of getting a smash character for free for buying 2 games for the price of one? That is a steal, and would be more fair to the consumer then that 5.99 for a character thing. Next, we make a add campaign at a one of the top video game conversions. Showing off the new hotness of the newest game. Which will show the true power of the nintendo switch. By taking advantage of the two color controls, we will call It "DUELITY MODE!" Where two players can play together,One controlling Travis's body and the other his soul. And...Fuck my inner marketer happened my bad. But,yeah waited to see ya review of this, cant wait for your deadly individualism of It. Well,I can wait but..you know what I mean.

@@Carzeyday Travis isn't unique. He's a generic anime swordsman from a shovelware game nobody played. People actually PLAYED Fire Emblem Fates. Sold 2 million copies. Also, just because a bad shill character like Corrin got in doesn't mean your bad trash character can also get in. People would get angry if Travis got added because NOBODY knows who he is, and even less people actually like him and his games. We want unique Smash newcomers and iconic characters, not random wii shovelware that nobody remembers. Moveset potential is not an argument. Anyone can have a unique moveset

I just want to say thank you for making this video. I played NMH over 10 years ago when I was in middle school and it was a polarizing game for me. You convinced me to buy this even if I'm a second try uni student on a trashy ass budget. I want to be a game dev and I was on the verge of buying it just because I wanted to support the release but this video was the final catalyst. I want to say thank you because I believe whoever watched this from beginning to end went ahead and bought it. @QMMarc
@QMMarc 5 лет назад
I'll be honest, it's not that unexpected for this game to take a different approach to the gameplay, I mean, look how killer7 played, it's a weird on-rails shooter with puzzles and you have to scan enemies before shooting them. It wasn't a thing that was ''in vogue'' at the time, was it? As much as it had a bit of tiresome as some hack n slashes of the type has, it's a lot of fun, especially for a small team and that price tag. It's just, like you said, a bit hypocrite, it's like story repeating itself in a way, Suda makes weird shit, some people don't like weird shit, weird shit get a cult status cause oh yeah, its pretty good weird shit. It's just, you'd expect fans to know better by now, since, they were the ones into the weird shit to begin with. I'm not saying an NMH3 wouldn't be great, it would, but, baby steps. It is, still, a cul sorta niche game, can't just put all the coins without thinking, you'd end up bankrupt.

I finally beat it just now, had zero expectations going in, and it completely blew me away. Suda's writing is as on point as it's ever been, the chips are a lot of fun to mess around with, and the music is surprisingly excellent despite having entirely new composers. As a longtime fan of Grasshopper games it feels like a big celebration of what makes their games great without being too much for newcomers to get into - you don't need to have played The Silver Case or any other of Suda's games (won't say which because spoilers), but fans of those are well served here. Speaking of voice acting, even though there isn't much of it what's there is excellent. It was a bit worrying for a few months there when it looked like we weren't going to see Robin Atkin Downes return but now that he's here and with Steve Blum in tow as Badman all their little comments and battle cries are perfect. And without delving too much into spoilers, hearing two certain characters got me extremely giddy. Shouldn't be hard to figure out who if you've played the game.

I respect your opinion and I am highly respectful of your content. I really thought this game was going to be cool. I liked the idea of something different and the game within a game concept seemed cool to me. I really loved all the nods to older games and the aesthetics of this game. But this game just felt lazy to me. Minimal voice acting and honestly trying to get through these levels just to hear the scraps of writing werent worth it at all. Multiple times playing this game i just asked “why am i doing this”. It was such a drag to get through sometimes i just wanted to quit and play something else. The leveling up in this game didnt feel like it was worth it half the time. The entire game to me just felt cheap and not even worth it. It is definitely an experience like none other but that does not justify gameplay that is just not fun. It simply isnt fun to me. But i love all of your videos and I cant wait for the next.

Unpopular opinion, but the sound design is VERY weak when it comes to gameplay. There are maybe only a few times where it's actually satisfying to kill enemies. And despite having about as much complexity as the original, the lack of any decent or "powerful" sounding attacks made it seem unconvincing that your attacks did the damage that the animations try to convey to the player. What I liked about the original was that it elevated the repetitive gameplay from being boring to very satisfying. And honestly, I'm kinda disappointed that the trademarks of the series, the blood and the decapitations, are nowhere to be found in this game. Honestly, it's nice with writing. And graphics are okay. But that's all I can give it.

I agree with this review. A lot of reviewers and people really did took this game down with mixed or negative reviews. Yet this game has so much charm and really did make me chuckle in so many parts. (Ugh that Epona part was hilarious). The references to other Suda51 games was amazing even if I haven't played the other games he has made. It made me want to find out more about the characters from his other games even more, so I can't wait to try out Silver Case and Killer 7 for sure. I love the NMH series and this definitely was an amazing return to the game. I even went ahead and also did a level 1 run which was crazy fun with the challenge. Finally got the game, on my second playthrough now. Can't believe the negative feedback on this game. It's not like the gameplay has ever been stellar. It's always been repetitive in all the games. Sure, there could be more silly fun gameplay gimmicks (I can only remember the racing minigame, the Asteroids-esque minigame, and Travis Strikes Back which I'm not sure even counts) but the strength of the series has always been the story telling, the dialogue, and all the things you talk about in the videos. Before I start, during the end there you came off a bit rambly. Juuust a bit. Anyways... Having the chance to play together with a friend of mine, I'll take back most of my negative opinion on the game. It isn't all bad, however I got the "New Mario" vibes. Basically while playing it's all fun and dandy, afterwards it's like "Yup. That was a thing". This certainly has more personality by comparison, but nothing really clicked with me. Which is kinda a shame since the music is enjoyable admittedly. Now I still hold my ground on to getting ports of the first two games. Purely due to either needing a Wii, WiiU, or deal a with crappy port. For newcomers that's not really fair for them; a majority (unfortunately) will just not even bother and move on elsewhere. You do make a point about a handful of HD ports not selling well, but most of the ones on Switch are doing quite well from what I gather. I guess it's a double edge sword ordeal. I just think this game isn't really the best way to garner hype for a proper new game in a franchise. Good intentions, yes. But as you said yourselve money talks. TL;DR: You know when you just a had a rough day, you're getting a hotdog from a stand, a cat comes in pummels the ever living hell out of you, and steals your hotdog in the process? It sucks.

You should never be apologetic for wanting what you know you want. Not saying you can't find some enjoyment out of it, but Travis Strikes Again isn't a great game, and no one asked for it. It deserved the backlash it got once we realized it wasn't the proper NHM game we expected after all these years. Glad you know that. Just because the Switch has developed a rep for having a ton of ports of several year old games doesn't mean that Suda51 shouldn't rerelease NMH 1 & 2 if that's what his fans are demanding. It's nonsensical to even say something like that. It's not Suda51's fault for Nintendo's shortcomings in dealing with their systems. Ghenry isn't correct in using the Switch's overabundance of ports of old games as reasoning for Suda51 to not port iver the NMH games. Don't listen to his views, listen to your views. Want what you want, man and don't apologize for it.

It seems like a lot of game reviewers that claim to have been "fans of the original" are either being disingenuous or outright lying, I'd never heard NMH1 be called a 'waggle game' before TSA released but there were a few instances of reviews saying that

This was my first NMH and Suda51 game I’ve ever played and while I’m fully aware of his previous games, I’ve only ever had interest in the first two NMH games. I really like this game, it’s hack and slash gameplay with its large amount of variety is right up my ally and the only complaint I have with it is that you can’t dodge roll out of attacks; it would make it feel so much better if you could. I honestly hope this game sells well so that we can get the first two remastered on switch because I really want to play them (and not have to shell out $60+ for the second game) and hopefully get NMH3.

After playing the PC version of the game all the way through in one sitting, I can say that I love everything about TSA except the gameplay. I just don't like isometric beat-'em-ups, but the writing and music make me love this game so much. TSA would almost be more enjoyable as a radio show, theater production, or a podcast; something that puts Suda's creative vision and characters front and center, rather than spamming Chips and holding down the light attack.

at the end of the day what I really want is suda to direct and have full control over a game that has absolutely nothing to do with past properties. I never really wanted a no more heroes 3. I loved all the games he's been involved in since then and had figured that he'd moved on. and frankly, the fact that no more heroes had a second game to begin with already felt like they were giving the concept a bit more attention than it deserved, not that I don't think it's a great game

What I appreciate about GrassHopper, even though they aren't the most efficient developers in the world, are these little secrets in everyone of their games. Like this "DarkSlide" move that turns the screen kinda black and positions Travis behind his enemy for some free shots. BTW: Anyone an idea how to pull this move 100% of time? Would say it's with the dodge button but it also seems to work when you tilt the stick while in block state (Is there a difference between NMH 1 and 2?)

TSA is just another NMH games that I like. Is it different than the previous two? Yes, of course in some ways. Are there some elements still there from the previous two? Yes, there are. Some wanna say it sucks cause it is a hack and slash. They'll say it is repetetive etc...Well...let me point some shit out. Streets Of Rage, Golden Axe, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Sonic The Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Contra, and many other games were pretty repetetive when you really look at it. But they were still awesome titles! Games like that when done righr, are still great games. And Travis Strikes Again is one of those titles. I hear and can relate to everyone wanting a No More Heroes 3. I definitely do too! But consider the storyline and how the game has to play with the story. It adds a new element to the series. And, is fitting, considering Travis is really into gaming (like us). It's a pretty great game. Glad I pre ordered the physical copy. And I'm hyped to know that ontop of this NMH game. We'll still likely be getting No More Heroes 3!

IMO, the reason why there has been so many negative commentaries/reviews is because they didn't know this was a Suda51-indie-size game. It's not published by Capcom, Ubisoft, EA, or WB, but by Grasshopper Manufacture itself, so if you compare TSA with NMH1 or 2, of course this one feels inferior, but that's 'cause of the budget. But even with thoses limitations, Suda51 has created another great game. I've enjoyed this game. Awesome writing, a lot of meta humor, the first NMH title that runs at 60fps, great moments (like the fifth game and the Day 7 intro update). I can't wait for the DLCs.

The only issues I’ve had with the game are the handful of co-op glitches that I ran into since I played the entire game in co-op with a friend. A few areas and puzzles didn’t seem to be tested enough when two players were going through. Puzzles in Life is Destroy would be incomplete-able if the players try to divide the work with one person manning switches while the other navigated the maze only for the switch person to either get killed and teleported or teleported due to distance and wind up locking both players in a square with no escape and having to exit the game world to reset. A few odd instances where one of us (usually me) got stuck in one of those fighting barriers and a generally unhelpful teleporting system based on distance that seemed to randomly switch who got teleported to who out if combat. There were other bugs but I don’t want to get too whiny, it wasn’t Bethesda levels of glitches all the time at least. 17:06 If you want to keep believing that then never bring a buddy along for the platforming. 20:30 YEAH! 6:21 For No More Heroes' case, I betcha PC Players are more interested in a Mainline NMS Ports than Nintendo Switch owners. I mean, No More Heroes: Heroes' Paradise already figure out how to translate Gestures Controls into Standard controllers, they can definitely work from there in figuring out how to translate that to Keyboard/Mouse- Hell, I can see them implementing Steam Input API so they can bring back Motion Controls in some ways. (quick note: if they decide on porting Heroes' Paradise, instead of the original release, it would turn from inferiority to superiority due to 1080p/1800p/4K/8K and 60fps/120fps, if the port is well optimized) I mean, SEGA eventually realized that and released Yakuza 0 on PC/Steam (not to mention, SEGA's PC Division is doing too damn well) and is slowly turning Yakuza into a multiplatform title to the point that the first three chronological Yakuza games are coming to Xbox One, a former-PlayStation 2nd Party exclusive coming to Xbox for the first time, and on Xbox Game Pass! Meanwhile, people REALLY want a Persona game (mostly Persona 5) on both PC and Switch- but naaaaaaaah, Let's release a highly polished Musou spin-off disguised as a sequel to both PS4 and Switch- oh, look at that, the PS4 version sold more than the Nintendo Switch in Japan (also, Coronavirus is happening in the meantime). Geez, I wonder why... keep in mind that SEGA owns Atlus, but from what I've seen, it feels like SEGA doesn't even own Atlus Sometimes, listening to feedback and porting demands might actually help sell your sequel in the long-run.

Before stopping to care about the opinions of reviewers and the gaming community, I dismissed this game because I assumed most of them understood every thing about the product. I was clearly wrong and have learned to consider the opinions of those who are more experienced to a specific genre and/or franchise on a case by case basis. While unlike you I actually prefer 2 over one mostly due to how streamlined it was and felt it cut down on things that just felt like padding, I can see many of your complaints are genuinely valid and hopefully will be addressed and no more heroes three. Also I completely agree that Travis strikes again was needed to refresh the franchise, as an indie developer I can understand difficulties on why it might’ve actually been easier to work on Travis strikes again with its current scope over making no more heroes three immediately, that actually sounds like an impossibility, and it exhausts me to read comments from gamers criticizing aspects of game development they don’t even know the details of in the first place. Finally, the Game Cube was actually more powerful than the PlayStation 2 by decent bit, so the time it wasn’t really the under powered console, it was second to the Xbox, but to be fair the difference in power was noticeable.

I ordered pre-order this. I was interested in NMH too, but think that current lore is enough, during this 10 years the cult following and analysis may have given it more content than it really is. This game maybe softer to understand Suda's wackiness, albeit be pseudo-Suda(as not his actual daily life, just work version of it), still very entertaining as is great. (nobody even auteurs are not that interesting in their daily lives). And... thanks to these videos, I checked my boxes and found Killer is Dead. Played it finally, and it is fine, despite odd hype around it in 2013. (I tend to skip playing if possible if there is big media outburst, since it twists my perception of the game too much, leading to disappointed (due to shifted expectations), which I guess is not the final intended effect of creators).

NMH 1 and 2 should be included with 3, in the same way bayonetta 2 came with the original on the WIIU. Maybe put them on the Eshop when the third game is coming out. Just *please* don’t use the Hero’s Paradise version, and don’t mess up the emulation.
@Ghenry
@Ghenry 4 года назад
I personally think a better plan would be to port 1 and 2 at least a handful of months before 3 is set to come out. It's easier to take that in within a due amount without pressuring newcomers to quickly finish them (it would also give these guys time to get into TSA as well). Kinda like Shenmue 1 and 2 being ported before 3 came out. But we'll see, maybe on June 23rd they'll have something to say about it at the NG+ event!
@ethanevenson3855
@ethanevenson3855 4 года назад
For sure, but you might have an issue with people who only purchase the third game being left out, then. Some people, even today, want to only buy things physical, won’t understand the extra price of buying the previous entries, or might not like digital purchases. For them, I feel like packing in at least 1 and maybe 2 would be great, as those titles aren’t available on the switch already, and you’d have far better odds of people giving a pack-in game a try than something they have to buy separately. I’m not sure what porting costs would be, I’m not sure if Nintendo has a recommended emulation setup for wii games, or if they’d need to tweak the game to run natively, but including NMH 1 and 2 to incentivize purchases of 3 would probably be the best option.

this game looks like old school reference textbook, in game format. I've long wondered that many games have chapters(after finishing unlocked), yet I see lost potential in those many times. New game+ is there. But I cannot think myself enjoying part of a 20hour story driven game, it is taking things out of context. Yet I dont seek new "super mario all-stars" (compilation of non-related games on same menu and disc). Reference textbooks (dictionaries/encyclopedias) for even more simple case) stood time well, despite only offering small, concise piece of particular concept or idea. Some better, some not so long. Yes, there is now Gears 5. In that, motivation is either beating achievements for each chapter or coop or something along those lines. What I'm after is like book of loosely knitted novellas, that you can enjoy as single meal or read many to enjoy thematic coherence with different stories and viewpoints. Suda has this vibe, and in this game more than ever. We already have many textbook chronicles of video games from different decades and themes.

If all it takes to introduce a long shelved series to a new generation to games, then I guess a Breath of Fire MMO/quest based action RPG (like monster hunter) spinoff game with its own unique story doesn't sound like such a bad idea after all. But I see more potential in a BOF MMO, honestly.

I enjoyed the game but I just miss some of the little things like changing to different beam katana models and having the ability to change shoes, belts, jackets and pants. I also think Bad Man had way too little involvement in the story. Feel like just having Shinobu as a 2nd character from the start would have worked fine also.Bad Man gets his visual novel next month so maybe that will make me feel different about him.
