Nick . Good points. Also , I believe breathing in a conditioned room is way different than outside. Also , one reason why I believe running outside is more beneficial is because you are not running at constant speed which loads your muscles , joint and limbs differently. I believe running day in and day out at constant speed on a treadmill for set amount of time may cause injury due to repetitive motion and fatigue. Running on treadmill is unnatural. I believe to run faster outside you need to use your glute more where as on treadmill it may not be the case and may result in improper form and an unnatural gait. I believe pro athletes like you or seasoned runners alike can benefit from treadmill to develop aerobic capacity at a constant speed because the chosen slope can remain constant on treadmill. I believe people who start running on treadmill will have hard time transitioning to outside and may have t relearn the proper form.

I’ve struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. I also have a naturally big frame and flat feet. At times when I’ve gotten my weight down to be very lean, running outside is great. But there is no way I could get in shape by running outside; the impact is just too hard on my ankles. Treadmills are a great way to ease into running with lower impact and make incremental, measurable gains. Also live in WI where the winters are brutal.

You touched on the #1 reason I use a treadmill, less impact. At the age of 52 my knees do not like the harshness of concrete and other hard surfaces. I am also one of those people that LOVE monitoring my stats to turn up the speed during specific times which I am not good at running outside. Zwift had turned the dreadmill into a fullmill IMHO. WIth that said, I do run outside from time to time and every single time I have my best 5K/10K results meaning I run faster outside than I do on a treadmill.

Reason number 3 for using a treadmill, being stuck in self isolation! This video is really helpful, I’ve got a 5k race in a couple weeks but stuck in isolation for 3 weeks so I’m doing my training on the treadmill instead. Can’t wait to get back to real outdoor running though!

The one thing that I like the most about treadmills is that you can get a long steady incline going. I'm training for an ultra with a lot of vert, but I don't live near a lot of long steep hills, so it's great to be able to set the treadmill to a 10% grade and grind to simulate race conditions. Otherwise, outdoors is king.

As a beginner I find the treadmill helps me find my pace, it helps me control my heart rate and building the muscles in my feet (allowing me to get more runs in). I do 2-3 runs a week on the mill and 1-2 outdoors, this as helped a ton when I do my outdoor runs. Good video

I will run on a tread mill because I can hold myself accountable to keep a certain speed at a certain incline for a specific mileage or time while watching something like a basketball game especially when it is way too hot and sunny outside while being in the air conditioned gym makes me feel like running a bit more. The places I've preferred running outside is when I can get close to a beach with sand or if there are many long trails that go on for a miles without having to stop for cars. Seems like the biggest factor in running outside that you can't replicate indoors is when it gets super windy making it so hard to run against the wind.

I feel pretty much the same way about treadmill running but ran a 10K time trial today on the TM because I just couldn't run fast outside today on the snowy roads. To be honest, I think doing a time trial on the TM makes it easy to hold that pace you are trying to achieve. It can keep you from going too fast and on the other end it can help you maintain a pace you may otherwise bail out on.

I think there's a combination of conditions that can make the treadmill your go-to running choice. In Canada, we get LOTS of snow. Often running is only truly possible on trails, or on the road. With a full time job, your options become before work (dark) or after work (dark), on a slippery surface, with little time allotted for traveling to trails. Treadmill is save, and I can be on it within minutes! Now that said, you mentioned the belt being fed to you and the workout intensity not being the same. What are your thoughts on self-powered treadmills?

Thanks for this post. I've been doing a lot of miles on TM vs roads and wanted perspective of real runner on this. If my volume were any more than the once per week "long run" of 7 mile 60 minute run on a TM I'd take it to the road for sure. If I were doing the volume of my youth there's no way I would do it on TM. The control factors on the TM is the draw for me coupled with the fact that I live in one of the most pedestrian unfriendly places on the planet (very few sideways and dangerous crossings).

Loved your comment about running in all conditions. I was bought up in a city where summers could be very hot with hot winds and winters stormy rain. I just got out there as you have to do the training. This is probably why I was more successful than my brother even though he had more raw talent. Your comments reminded me of Steve Monaghetti, Olympian marathon runner. Fantastic talent but never achieved the results he should have. Why because he believed he couldn't run in hot weather. Yes it gets hot in Aus, (i live here but am from NZ). But Steve got obsessed with this so on any race day anywhere in the world where it was "Hot" he bombed. I believe that should he have just trained in hot weather and yes it hurts, but sometimes training and by definition racing must hurt, he would have achieved much faster times and greatness.

Treadmil is just fine. You can adjust your pace, keep tracks of your stats and use inclines for an extra burn. The biggest reason as stated is its far easier on your knees and joints. Always remember though, running on an actual road or on a track is harder than a treadmill (should you not have it inclined) you will reap the exact same benefits health and fitness wise nonetheless. On a treadmill I have no issue running at 6:30 for 6-7 miles without stopping. When I have to run the track for my jobs PT test every year though, my time is closer to a 7:20 mile and I can do maybe 5 max. It's definitely harder.
@akshaykhanna9802
@akshaykhanna9802 Год назад
I disagree. It seems it varies from person to person. For me running on a treadmill might be easier for joints. But I can’t run at the same average speed or run the same distance on a treadmill because treadmill’s sponginess saps energy from every stride, I can’t micro-adjust my speed (which is a natural phenomenon) and it’s boring (thanks to a dictated pace and indoor environment). My dad has the same experience. But my sister who is habitual with walking on treadmill with Netflix on, finds the treadmill easier.

Last year, I was training for a 10K, and due to my busy schedule, I had no option but to run on the treadmill. I ran on that thing for about 2 months, only being able to run outside about 3 weeks before the race, and I knocked off about 3 minutes off my previous 10K best. Fun fact, my long runs were only 6 miles long, and I ran way faster in that race (7:18/mile average) than in my trainings (about 7:40/mile average).

Another great use of treadmill is if your race has massive inclines, but your running area does not. For example, I live in a flat state, but have done the Pike Peak Ascent (average 11% grade, over 8k in elevation change, all up!), and only way to train mile after mile of going uphill is treadmill.

Cool vid! I enjoy your channel especially when you invite folk out to the track for a little competition. Lol...Nice work... Also, I have watched that 2012 David Rudisha video many times in awe! I saw your video the other day and was like wait...wait... what? Thanks for sharing your story! I watched the race again just to see you put in work! Of course, everyone wants gold or to make the podium, buuuuuut I would say 5th in the world at the Olympics? Well... Not too shabby! lol...Nice work. Anywayz... I just wanted to add my two cents on the video topic. I am a non-athlete, but I am trying to take better care of myself. I enjoyed your comments about the pros and cons of both, but would add the following. I could go on for days, buuuuut I don't want to make my own video, I just feel you covered the majors, but just a few add-ons.... As for outdoor running... We are an indoors society.... Ya can't put a price on all the spiritual health benefits we receive from being outside with nature. So yeah... I do both... As for the treadmill... Well... Once I truly understood the machine and how to use it, it is a fascinating machine. I just kept getting motion sickness. Sooooo... yeah... folk... we need to properly cooldown before getting off the machine. Learned that clearly the hard way, buuuuuuut oddly enough, not my point! lol.... Yes, there are wonderful adjustments that have to be made for running outdoors, buuuuuuuuut dear folk! Please understand... when running on the treadmill, you must stay focused! Especially if you decide to open your stride! Focus on the planting of the foot and the push off.. I am poor so my gyms' machines are a luck of the draw on how well the belt works on the treadmills. Sooooo... One false move and yep, knee injury! Soooooo.... test your belt with a push and pull on the belt. If it is too loose and you can feel the slippage, then switch machines... As for running shoes... I was going to ask you to do a review of the Asics Nimbus and how they stack up against the competition, buuuuut I have been through so many generations of them there is no need as I am not switching. I do every couple of years become fascinated with the name Mizuno, but not buying any anytime soon.... That being said... I am a big fan of Running Warehouse and have bought from them on a number of occasions over the years so it is nice that you are showing them so love. Of course, folk complain about the price of basketball shoes, we need to fuss at the shoe companies to bring down the price of the higher quality running shoes. lol.. In either case....I am not on Instagram. These days I only have a couple of social media channels. Much longer story..... Soooo... not sure how I could win some size 12-4E Asics Nimbus Gel running shoes, but the holidays are around the corner and I really need of a new pair.... Good luck with your company and stay safe. Peace. I'm out.... P.S. I learned to love the treadmill. It keeps me honest! Specifically with the pacing. I am getting better outdoors, but I am working on my discipline to push myself even when outdoors.

I live in a region that is know for extremely hot summers which is imposible to run outside. Even in the winter the weather can vary a lot. So I think for me a treadmill is a great investment at least for summer workouts

I definitely enjoy outdoor running more! Fresh air and it just feels better. Although treadmills are convenient and allows you to control the pace which is nice. Whenever I travel the treadmills in the hotels come in clutch because whenever we travel, we're always in a rush.

I used to like to do hard intervals or tempo on a treadmill, especially if it was very hot. On a treadmill you have to keep up the pace. For me, I would rather be forced to hold the pace and be challenged to hang on for a certain time. I stopped running on treadmills due to Covid because I didn't want to go to the gym.

Same. As a beginner, running outside I wouldn’t be keeping a decent pace or distance. Treadmill is holding me accountable atm but will go outside when I’m more confident. Enjoying the treadmill though, running is a great challenge.

Ive noticed treadmills give you more opportunity for reflex and balance training if you go about it without touching the hand rails. If you turn the incline way up, you're going to be burning up some new sets of muscles you never burned by running outdoors. Just my findings.

Just found a study on the nih website "Effects of six weeks outdoor versus treadmill running ..." and its Conclusions states "Both OT (outdoors) and TT (treadmill) improved physical fitness and decreased fat percentage. However, compared to TT, the OT intervention preserved leg SMM and induced greater physical fitness improvements."

The reason I don't like using treadmills is because I'm less likely to push through the workout. All I have to do is grab the handles on the side or lower the speed or something to that effect. When I run outside, I cant turn around or really give up. Once you start, you can't turn back.

@Nick Symmonds Too would you run in 45 degrees c plus (113 farenheit) or no because out here in mid weastern australia that is a given every single summer at some point in time. Infact last year i lived through a day of 49.5 degrees c weather (121 degrees faarenheit).

Thousands of miles of running on roads since the 80s, only leg injuries I've ever sustained came using treadmills - hamstring tear and gastroc tear. Maybe I never got my stride right on the things, but it always felt clipped and unnatural. I pity runners from such cold areas who need to use them a lot, well done to those who manage it.

The thing I like about the treadmill is pacing. I love running outdoors and I understand all the reasons why it is better. I am a returner to running having put on weight and I now I am losing weight after many years of no running. I am running Parkruns (in UK) they are 5K every Saturday. I am trying to get faster so I run hills and do fartlek outside etc. But I also run on a treadmill for a set time at a set pace so I know I am increasing in pace. I know the pace is not equivalent to the road but I am talking about pace relative to last week or last month on the treadmill.

Thanks Nick, few interesting bits to add to your vid: - Mo Farah uses a $10K handmade woodway treadmill built specifically to counter all teh downsides of treadmill running, he basically has the cheat code to running on treadmills.. so he might not be a fair comparison. - Regular treadmills forces your body to use a completely different set of muscle groups as opposed to running outside. - Different muscle groups makes perceived effort bizarre on a treadmill. Going slow pace feels fast or taxing for some reason. So highly recommend gauging effort with heart rate rather than pace/speed. - As an aspiring elite runner, Id day ideal strategy is to only run on treadmills during inclement weather and more importantly for easy recovery miles after super hard sessions where you can recover faster by not running outside.
@frlipa
@frlipa 3 года назад
You are making a few quite dubious assumptions. Why would you use "completely different muscle groups" for running on a tread mill? Makes no sense. You only use different muscle groups when running up, down or on uneven terrain but certainly not "complety" different because most are still the same. And this has nothing to do w/ treadmills. And what do you base on your assumption that you recover faster? If you recover faster when you use completely different muscle groups then do pushups.
@mikediazArtist
@mikediazArtist 3 года назад
@@frlipa They aren't assumptions. Running outside is completely different from running on a treadmill. On a treadmill the ground/treadmill belt is being moved for you using the power of the treadmill. And running outside, the ground does not move under you and you have to push off the ground to move forward. So even though you are using a lot of the same muscles to run, the muscle groups are different between the two. Its not assumptions, its physics. This is why your heart rate is lower on the treadmill, because the power of the treadmill is helping a runner go, many avid runners even add a 1% incline to make it simulate outside running. A lower heart rate also allows a runner to spend less energy which allows a runner to recover quicker from outside running. But yea you dont have to take this from me even though ive been running for 20years. Ask Nick Symmonds or any other avid runner about this. Or go to your local gym and ask the trainers.
