Treasure hunters find undiscovered shipwreck in Lake Michigan

back in the late 90's I was diving with along established, now defunct diving club. I met an older sometimes member who wanted to do some diving. Bob lived in an older travel trailer in the back of Marina he worked at, and drove a then 20 year old pinto wagon. Story was he lost big in divorce court. We were diving a section of river near a thruway bridge when Bob starts scraping the zebra mussels off what I thought was a mooring block. He motioned me over, and I could clearly make out the dial, Bob had found a safe. By the time I got off from work the next day, he and a couple friends had it raised. The Pinto listed badly with the blue tarp wrapped safe in the back. Next time I saw Bob he was driving a new Dakota 4x4. I asked him about the contents of the safe. He told me that it was empty, but there was a little twinkle in his eye and the smile that said different. He asked me to stop by his trailer, as there were a couple scuba tanks he sold me dirt cheap, and we had a beer or 2. Two days later, the trailer was gone and I never saw him again. It's exciting when you find something, and you want to tell everyone, but you've GOT to keep it on the down low if you want it to change your life.

Finders keepers. Change the law. Notice how the state only wants to get involved with found treasure after someone else goes through the trouble of discovering it.

No box cars, no gold. I heard the same story from a friend that used to own a submarine on the great lakes. He told me the same story and told me he hunted for years for that gold. Now all wrecks are protected, nothing gets taken from them. Back in the days he did it. people took everything off wrecks, thats why so many look stripped.

How many times has the courts overruled the states . California was overruled when a couple found a strongbox full of gold coins in their backyard . The state only gets part of the tax any time they sell one of the coins . Michigan has tried to tax liquor used on passenger planes even though the plains don't land there . This was in an old Play Boy article back in either late 80's or early 90's . Most times that I've heard a state tried to take advantage of a treasure hunt most times the state court has overruled the state quoting " Finders Keepers " witch in its own way is a common law across the country . Before I had my heart failure I was with the GPAA " Gold Prospectors Association of America " . This is how I know , between them and keeping track of court rulings of state and federal law .

Have not heard any more about this 5 years later....Happily ever after I guess.

First rule in treasure hunting, loose lips sink ships. Some treasure hunters are more interested in fame than the primary reason for being there to begin with. Screw fame and notoriety, just show me the money. Next, don't even tell your wife, best buddy, or girlfriend until you've secured the loot in several safe places only you know about. And then only reveal a partial amount if you don't want to lose it all. I love women but most can't shut their yappers. Good hunting, guys.

I'm glad they found the $2,000,000 in Gold, good luck to them, it's great that the US Government didn't want to take any of it.

Rule number 1. Never tell the state of Michigan you found safe possibly full of gold. Because now the story will be the state of Michigan found a safe possibly full of gold.

I think people who find it should keep their find, I do believe they should allow archaeologists access for historical purposes. As far as Insurance companies and descendents are concerned if they are not searching or spending the money looking there is no reason they should get anything.

Such finds are of HISTORICAL value. People who steal from such finds forget that others who are alive now stand to inherit some money that's been found.

Twelve feet down eight feet into underneath where the board walk squeaks at the oldest Marina on state to state Line does meet there you'll find 200,000 in rare coins locked in a safe cables wrapped around main piling to keep and if you are so lucky to spot it in its dark keep , It's yours please don't tell the two states.

I have a friend that knows right where it is. He used to look for it and pulled a chain off the wreck and an old wooden box. He tryed to find it again and couldnt. He ended up buying a submarine. He had that theough the 70's then sold it. Sorry guys, no box cars and no way you can keep anything off that boat. Michigan passed laws saying you cannot take anything off a ship wreck. Thats why my friend stopped looking.

They have the right equipment and know how to use it, but they have no clue what to do with what potential treasures they find. Let me ask a general question ? Do you not think for a moment that with the millions of certified divers in the US & Canada, and after see this series that the subject gold would not have been found yet? To me it appears that some people have been using Lake Michigan as a dumping ground for construction waste. And them bars down there are actually bricks, pavers, etc. Keeping a 100 million gold bar secret to his death bed seems far fetched. Then again its all about ratings is it not! I remember awhile back when the was talk about certain objects being stuffed in storage lockers for the program Storage Wars to increase the ratings, there may be truth or not but the hype builds ratings. Just my humble opinion.

I believe I would have opened the chest it's probably deteriorating to the point you could open it by hand with no tools and I would have never spoken another word about it. I have to say these guy's don't seem to bright. Now the state will take everything and not even say thank you

I follow many treasure hunts. It’s a very sad legal battle. Hunters spend thousands of hours and millions of dollars in this pursuit. Then they find it and are met with every lazy POS government or insurance entity that lay claim. It’s absurd! Theses laws need to change.

But how would a couple of million worth of Confederate gold wind up on a boat in Lake Michigan? If it had been seized by the Union, they would have just put it on a train and sent it to Washington. It never would have been sent up there to Michigan.

It is just a story. There is no proof a box car full of gold was thrown in the lake. Kinda like the oak island mystery lot's of theories but no treasure has ever been found

We vcan thank the high priests of the Archeology that have had laws past preventing removal of anything under water. If this wreck had not been reported it would eventually be lost to Nature thank you High priests of the archeology.

A story from a friends butt who told his sisters who told him a story about crack.

Almost 3 yrs later and they are making a show about this on the history channel. I dont see any info of what was in the chest so Im assuming they didnt open it after 3 yrs now. This is just like oak island, they never finish anything. Its the string along golden carrot show.......does this chest have treasures of life changing value or will another fish have to die to see whats in the safe??. Lets start one thing then find a tid bit and stop working because its 430pm so we can talk about it in the war room. Theres no gold or treasure, Ive figured it out......the treasure comes from the shows. Companys advertise on history channel we watch the dumb show they pay marty and the others and marty strings it along as long as possible.
