On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share the do's and don'ts of trellising plants in your garden. Some plants love being grown vertically up a trellis, while others do not. Knowing the difference is often the key between success and failure, and I give my trellising secrets for success so you'll know when trellising plants is good and when it's bad.
Vertical gardening is a great way to get certain plants and their fruits up off the ground, which can make them less vulnerable to pests and diseases. You can find all my DIY trellis building tutorials here: • Vertical Gardening and...

You can use a piece of cloth or netting to hold up large watermelons. I do it for my small sugar baby watermelons, because those can get to be about 8 pounds. I see other gardeners doing it for the large ones, especially if they don’t have lots of space for them to crawl on the ground. Thank you. Your garden looks beautiful as always. 😊

As always, a great and informative videos. BTW Congratulations on your marriage to Britney. I was tickled pink. I saw the ring on your finger and was asking myself if you did get married. But your beautiful post with the picture of your wedding confirmed it. Also loved Dale in the picture. I know he is a big part of your life as mine are too. I always enjoy your adventures with him at the end . He is just so adorable. I wish many more years of happiness for the three of you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I grew some pumpkins last year on a homemade A-frame trellis and crocheted hammocks for my fruit to sit in. I had a few bigger than my head and nothing fell off the vines as they grew. I think as long as you know what you're growing and take proper precautions you should be good to grow just about anything on a trellis except for maybe the prize winning large pumpkins and melons

Just a random thought, if you're trying to diversify your business, I feel like the drip irrigation 'industry' has leagues of room for improvement. They all use the same cheap kinky plastic tubing, with the same method of puncturing a hole and inserting drip lines/emitters, which is incredibly inconvenient especially with a dynamic garden setup where those punctured holes cannot be undone. I hate waste, and I hate cheap plastic, and I don't have any great ideas in mind, but I know we can do a LOT better.

But if you have 6, 12, 20 melons, it becomes impossible. It is easier and better to just let them sprawl. Then, you don’t have to worry.

Some small pumpkins can be trellised. Large vines can’t hold the weight of larger pumpkins, so they’ll never reach maturity.

You can hammock heavier melons with old t shirts
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
That would be difficult. What do you do when you have 5, 10, 15, 20 fruits? You'd be constantly chasing your tail. It's really easy and low risk to let the larger fruited melons sprawl out, and their thick rinds are naturally resistant to pests. I've actually had claw marks on a melon in the past, and whatever it was couldn't get through. That was only a one-time thing, though.

@2 Minute Garden Tips, could you do a more in-depth video on where and when to start pruning your watermelons for the best harvest? This is my first year and I’ve looked at almost every video I can find but I need something a little more concise. Some don’t prune back to the beginning vine, some allow baby shoots to run off and others cut them out. I just want to harvest a few nice sweet sugar babies for my husband this summer. I have some fruit set already and it is further down the vine (about 3’) down. I’m not sure if i should prune some leaves off out to that point or not. Mine are running on the ground. Any help is greatly appreciated. Great video btw, I learned growing up from you and I love it! It makes my life so much easier.

How do you trellis sweet potatoes vines?
@tiffymag
@tiffymag Месяц назад
In another video, you mentioned the native habitats of melons is tropical or subtropical rainforest where they grow all year long on the forest floor in dappled light and climb up the trees with their vines. So I think people are surprised to hear you say you can't or shouldn't trellis melons. However, I agree that it is much less work to just let them sprawl on the ground. They did very good last year and took over a good chunk of my stone patio. Is there a reason they seem to do better with some kind of tarp or stone underneath them instead of grass/dirt?
@Chris-op7yt
@Chris-op7yt Месяц назад
Need a straight forward way to trellis crops like peppers and eggplants. As these plants load up with heavy fruit set, they still keep branching, making it difficult to keep them from getting blown over in strong winds. Simple weave and individual staking are both difficult to do and have limited success.

When trellising watermelons, you need to cradle the fruit. Asian farmers have perfected this technique. They grow more fruit in a smaller area.

All you have to do is get or make a hammock! I grew my watermelon vertically on a wooded fwnce and put a netted hammock under it to hold the watermelon it never fell. I wouldnt grow vertically with the huge watermelons though.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
That’s exactly my point. The vines can’t support the weight, so now you have all this extra work to do to correct the mistake. And if you have many fruits, it becomes impossible. The ties will fail, you’ll miss some, wind will knock them down. It just isn’t worth it. So many problems and extra work.

Tfs! Do you prune your sweet potato vines? If so when and how often? Thank you.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
No, absolutely not. Generally, pruning stresses the plant, then encourages more vigor, which will take away from root development. I only cut sweet potato vines if they become so unruly that I have no choice.

If we trestle it vertically and find ways to support the weight of the fruit, can it still be done vertically?
@WisGuy4
@WisGuy4 Месяц назад
Yes, absolutely- cut an old t-shirt into 2 to 4 pieces and make support slings/hammocks that you tie to the trellis with rope or sturdy twine.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
Yes, with significant extra work. You’ll have to watch them regularly, tie them up, the wind knocks them down, ties come undone, and if you have many melons, it becomes a headache. It is easier to avoid the whole problem and just grow them on the ground on tarps or weed barrier.
@JamesJones-gj1ii
@JamesJones-gj1ii Месяц назад
Just support the melon with a netting and you’ll be fine
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Месяц назад
Most cheap netting will not be strong enough for melons. It would have to be extremely taught, and then you have to deal with those nets eventually wearing out. I prefer metal trellises for heavier fruits.

This is the first bad advice I’ve heard you give in the several years I’ve been a subscriber. One CAN grow heavy squash or melons on a vertical trellis. You simply need to create some sort of a sling to support them. Cut an old t-shirt in half and tie it on with rope to the trellis, and that will support a melon or squash up to 20 pounds or so.
