They actually did name the creature. The scene where they're arguing about a name, immediately after Valentine's (Kevin Bacon) says "We have got to get out" is when the woman says she's gonna grab Mindy. That's when Walter yells "Graboids! That's it, Graboids!"

@@NuclearFridge1 I think the best part is that while he is those things, he's also not a stereotype, or following the common tropes of the type. He's got boatloads of empathy, slow to judge people harshly while also not naive, and he's not *crazy* about certain things, he doesn't have paranoia to the Nth degree about one specific topic, he's merely considering all possibilities and being prepared to deal with a loss of normality. As much as I hate to stereotype, I knew a few of that type and they unfortunately fit it; if only they were more like Burt.

A rather simple concept executed near perfectly with some great characters, Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward is a most excellent duo, who actually make pretty smart decisions and are actually trying to save themselves instead of being mindless "scary movie morons". I love this movie.

It's a very intelligently written ensemble. The only idiot who survives is Melvin, and only because the movie doesn't want to off a kid.
@Knight-Bishop
@Knight-Bishop 11 месяцев назад
It's also got a certain efficient way of characterization; you know almost immediately what type of person everyone is, the relationships and interactions between all of the characters aren't in an uncanny valley and feel genuine without forcing anything. And bad things happen but it isn't just because of people with horror-brain; either they genuinely had no reason to expect something, or didn't know what else to do while panicking and in very in immediate danger (like the guy on the tire).

I find it amusing that Kevin Bacon disavowed this film for a long time, thinking it would hurt his career in the long term (he only did it because he was a new dad and desperate for the paycheck), but as time has gone by, the love Tremors fans have for the film has changed his mind. He now has said this was some of the most fun he ever had making a movie. It's amazing what time and an enthusiastic fanbase can do. As for me, I really like this film a lot. So much fun.

He was probably telling the truth both times that he only did it for the money and he thought it was going to be a dud but that it was still a hell of a lot of fun to make. It's only now that he's come to realize that people love the campiness and all the lovable (except Melvin) characters.

This is about as close to a perfect script as you can get. It's widely heralded as an example of how to only show what's absolutely necessary. There isn't one scene, one line of dialogue, or one cut that isn't strictly necessary. I've watched it hundreds of times and it never gets old.

Love this movie, not even watched your reaction yet but got a feeling you will too. In my opinion, the first 4 are the best, the tetralogy ending with The Legend Begins from 2004. The more recent entries feel like Tremors in name only, as the creatures are all CGI and look nothing like what we've seen before. They lacked the heart of the original films made by Stampede Entertainment. The actor who played Earl (Fred Ward) died relatively recently sadly, it was either earlier this year or the second half of 2022 but he had great onscreen chemistry with Kevin Bacon, you really buy into them being good friends.
@Rainbow.Pegacorn.Cosplay
@Rainbow.Pegacorn.Cosplay 11 месяцев назад
You know how they say that sometimes, the second movie is better than the first? Tremors is an exception to that. The first is significantly the best. Both Kevin Bacon and Reba McEntire have some of the best sarcastic comebacks in this whole movie. Also, if you don't recognize the little girl who plays Mindy, it's the same actress who played Lex Murphy in the first (only a cameo appearance in The Lost World) Jurassic Park movie 3 years after this one, Ariana Richards

The specific name for this subgenre of sci-fi-horror is the Creature Feature. And you've picked a great one in this class! I can vouch that the sequels up through 4 are all worth watching in their own right. I'd say 3 is the weakest, since it gets rather silly, but all of them are fun. You'll love 2. It's right up there with the first and is a lot more adventurous.

When this movie was released, several critics noted that it was very reminiscent of the style of 1950's horror movies. A largely unexplained monster is plopped down in the story, the violence and gore are downplayed or take place mainly off-screen, and the story doesn't take itself too seriously. Suitable for family viewing.

My favorite line in the movie is actually foreshadowing. "Runnin's not a plan! Runnin's what you do when a plan FAILS." And in the end, Val's plan. . . is run. Another great thing about this movie is that the characters are smart. Rhonda's the most educated, but everyone puts their heads together to come up with plans and ideas to stay alive. It means the Graboids have to learn and be smart, too, to remain a credible threat. It's a very intelligent movie.
@SunlessNick

Rhonda's also not the omnidisciplinarian you get in a lot of these films. She's not a biologist, she's a geologist, and it shows in the things she thinks of.

@@SunlessNick Yep, another thing I love. She can make some good educated guesses, but that's all they are for the most part. Not only is it really funny when she shoots back "Why do you keep asking ME?" after one too many questions she can't answer, it heightens the tension when even the Royal Smart Person knows barely more than anyone else about what's going on.

It's not a horror movie, it's a MONSTER movie. The quintessential, essential monster movie.

You may also recognize the little girl Mindy. She was the blonde hacker girl from Jurassic Park.

Remember there is also a short lived SERIES ... TREMORS (2003), 13 episodes (shorter than Firefly) !

It makes me so happy to see reactions to this movie. The other films in the franchise are pretty good, too -- it's one of those, "If you like one, you'll probably like 'em all" things. There was also a TV series that only lasted a season or two that was a fun, too.

❤ Pogo stick girl? JURASSIC PARK. Walter? BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THE GOLDEN CHILD. Earl? REMO WILLIAMS. For cheesy sci-fi horror, this is pretty good. Half the cast has notable credits. Several sequels, some are better than others. Good times, Addie.

I'm still waiting for somebody to Watch-&-React to ALL SEVEN of these ("Graboid") Movies; most will only do this 1st one, few have also done the 2nd, but that's it...🤞 Fun-Fact: the little girl ("Mindy") was played by Ariana Richards, the same girl who was also in "Jurassic Park!"

"Tremors 2: Aftershocks" & "Tremors 3: Back To Perfection" are both good, each bringing something new to the story. After Trem3, there was a fun 13-episode TV series on the Sci-Fi Channel adding Dean Norris to the the characters left from "Tremors 3". "Tremors 4: The Legend Begins" is a prequel set in the late 1800's (period costumes!). "Tremors 5" is roundly disliked by fans, and doesn't add much to the story. Overreached with bad CGI. "Tremors 6" and "Tremors 7" were direct-to-Netflix and get mixed reviews from fans.

Want scary? "The Innocents" 1961. It's b&w. Watch it with the lights out. No blood and gore. No monsters.
