When Whitman says "go back to rear foot off your jab," he is referring to returning to the defensive stance or repositioning yourself after throwing a jab. This movement helps you maintain balance and readiness for any potential counterattacks. Additionally, he also teaches how to throw a jab by shifting your weight from rear foot to lead foot for "snapping jab" and "entering the pocket." This suggests that the jab can be used both defensively and offensively. When he advises attacking with a jab when your opponent is about to shift their weight to their rear foot, it's likely because they are less mobile and not as quick to respond during that transition. Attacking at that specific timing can catch them off guard and make it more challenging for them to counter effectively.

I’ve watched this a few times, I can tell it’s high quality stuff, which probably explains why I’m struggling with it a little 😂 Is he saying, lead with your rear foot when you jab, almost spring forward? As oppose to stepping forward with your lead leg? And secondly, in regards to the opponents movement. Catch them with that jab as they are moving back, and catch them with the power hand when the step forward? Any tips appreciated 🙌 Great video, smashing it as always. 👍
@sgu00dir
@sgu00dir 3 года назад
Im also struggling with it, but looks like a gem of info. FYI, jab is all about the back foot - try it - put your weight on front foot and jab = no power. Put weight on back foot, sit into it a little, now jab and transfer weight forward = power. Punching is always about weight transfer, so a forward punch should have weight going from back to front for max power (you don't always have to do that, but for power) Realising that, and learning where that balance on the rear foot really helped me get a snapping jab, whereas before it always felt weak. Not sure what this footwork thing here is, but I think he is saying time the jab when you see the weight of opponent go on his back foot maybe??!? Not sure, need him to explain this to the camera so we can get it!!

@@mallorcahermano1477 Cool!!! You know who does this incredibly well - Mayweather (of course :)). You can really get the feel of this by getting in that Philly shell type position so that you have the defensive stance like Mayweather, and can really feel that weight in the back foot, then its just about timing the transfer of weight from back foot, through body and into jab as it connects!! Thats the bit I don't have yet though :)
@elijahantony4300
@elijahantony4300 2 года назад
This video is about countering, more specifically about timing pertaining to the best counter opportunities. It has nothing to do with which of your own leg works in co-ordination to which strike you throw (The person who responded below telling you jab with your rear foot). The misunderstanding is because he switches roles with this fighter seamlessly during the explanation which makes it hard to follow. For better reference watch Dynamic Striking with him and Gaejthe or watch the entire full reptile video from which this is clipped. I will try to explain as succinctly as possible but watching the above two videos should make it clear. While your opponent is moving around, you are hunting or are hunted ( with you drawing them in). In mode 1. You being the hunter, you push them backward with your jab (safe/non-committed). You time their rear foot, catching them right before they set into stance preventing them being able to effectively counter. In mode 2. You draw them in with them hunting you. You time the front foot, just a second before it sets them into stance and hit them with a power cross. Again, you are not trying to get them once the foot is planted but the second just before the foot is planted. i.e: as the weight is about to shift onto the foot. I think either before or after this segment he talks about anchor and how being caught out of position (you hitting them just as the stance is going to be achieved) causes the leg on which the weight is present to be an anchor facilitating the ease of the knock out because the anchor holds them in place but being out of stance keeps the head unsupported allowing the head to be loosely tethered enough to be hit effectively. IMPORTANCE OF STANCE: Get into stance and iron guard(gloved hands touching your chin). Ask a friend to throw a power strike on the gloves. Now from stance, arc your back all the way back (think Adesanya against Whitaker) and ask your friend to repeat. Again from stance lean your head all the forward such that it overhangs your lead leg knee and ask them to throw a power hook. You will rapidly understand the importance of stance and quickly understand this video......also you will never forget it. :P
