I lived in Newport, RI at the time. I was probably 40 feet away as this happened. This was after the trouble Trey ran into, and as he walked on stage, a man yelled out, "Welcome back, Trey!" He looked down with a huge grin. It was a cloudy day, but the temperature was decent. A great crowd that day. One of the Marley's played to torrential downpours, the entire crowd huddling with strangers under tarps and umbrellas, smiling with friendship and a common awe at the heavy rain. A family feeling, for sure. The night wrapped up with a deep, muddy, drenched, swampy soul-rock set by the Black Crowes, to a beautiful, remarkable sunset. I took the ferry back to town and partied for the rest of the night. A truly great memory.
I was out on one of the boats he talked about before "if I could be a sailor". I loved this set! Although I think we left during Black Crowes to get back to the dock and get out of the rain. I go with friends to the folk fest every year and this was my favorite that I've seen. ...I'm so glad this recording is on RU-vid.
2008 was my favorite year of my life with 2007. They were my only two good years that I cherish. Thanks for encapsulating this time of my life with Trey.
I have attended the Newport Folk Festival every year since I was a 6 weeks old. My family has two food concessions on both sides directly next to the main fort stage... and I have been so incredibly blessed to have witnessed hundreds of amazing musicians here. Trey has influenced my musical career more than any other, and seeing how breath-taken he is at the beautiful scenery of this venue just makes me so happy. It takes some serious courage for this man to step up there and play ACOUSTIC Phish tunes. Please come back to Newport, Trey. This was a special treat for us all, especially Phish fans.
God, what a great set! Wish I'd been there... a real treat to hear Trey play and sing these great tunes all on his own...with only an accoustic along for the ride. All respect and love to you, Trey!
I like that song alot.!Thank you...you are really great with those lyrics my friend....reminds me of myself at times. Great job. It's like you see inside my world. ❤
God, I miss live music, I miss Newport Folk Fest, I miss Phish/Trey, I miss being in a crowd of happy smiling faces. I can not wait till we can all be together again.
Reminds me of being 18 years old in '99 and driving my old 74 bright yellow Corvette stingray to the Jersey shore with my girlfriend. I wore out my acoustic Trey set cassette tape that year. Trey had an acoustic jam and asked the audience for a name and someone shouted "MACARONI!". The band decided not to keep the name in the end and named it The In Law Josie Wales.
What a great set. One of my favorite Trey acoustic sets. Starting with Brian and Robert, what a move to connect with everyone there in Newport RI. I used to live there! PS...I do Phish covers ;)
