Tri Martolod ("Three sailors" in Breton) or Tri Martolod Yaouank ("Three young sailors"), is a traditional Breton song which dates to the 18th century in Lower Brittany. It was made famous by the interpretation, the arrangement and the recordings made by the Breton harpist Alan Stivell, in the 1970s.
The lyrics tell the story of three young sailors who embark for Newfoundland and the history quickly settles into a romantic dialogue. The music is a round in three steps typical of the South Cornouaille and common in the Breton coastal areas.

That’s Alan Stivell.I first saw him back in the 70’s. I had a huge crush on Rene Werner, his fiddler.

Those 3 sailors sound like the Beausangs of Newfoundland. One of them ended up in Ballycotton Ireland. Ellen Beausang was my GG grandmother. I think the Beausangs were boat builders from Brittany.

Now that I'm reading the lyrics, I'm surprised I didn't get "Douar Nevez" (Newfoundland). It's so similar to "Daear Newydd" (Welsh for "New Earth")!

I am learning Breton & Welsh and the other 4 modern Celtic languages, and I actually noticed lots of cognates that look quite similar, and knowing the Welsh word helps a lot, because it’s not easy to find vocab videos teaching Breton, so sometimes I can easily figure out the meaning of a new Breton word if it is very similar to the Welsh word - I am also learning Dutch and Old Norse and Norwegian (and many other pretty languages) and, I also noticed lots of similarities between these languages and Breton / Welsh!

Its both catchy and very pretty. If you look at Nordic seaman folk like Krummavisur or Regin Smidur its much less pretty and more droning. Like the sound of a taglharpa I guess. I assume the more lyrical harp is more of an important instrument to bretons.

Breton (Brezhoneg) is a Celtic language more closely related to Welsh than Irish or Scots Gaelic. It, was like the, the British Celtic languages, treated with contempt until recently but is now undergoing to a revival.

Fat majority of people who speak Breton probably speak French more often, so I'm guessing they don't speak it with the "pure" accent.

Breton is closer to Welsh, since the Bretons moved from romanized Britain during the collapse of the Roman empire, fleeing the Anglo-saxon invasions. Unfortunately, apart from a specific touch on the romance French language, the old Gaulish language is completely extinct.

Are Brenton and French two separate languages and people?
@michaelhalsall5684
@michaelhalsall5684 3 года назад
The Bretons are descendants of British Celts who migrated to France in the early Middle Age, hence "Brittany" Breton is a Celtic language and French is a Romance (Latin derived) language, quite different from each other. Brittany is a region of France nowadays and most Bretons can speak French.

But they are related. Breton is a celtic language and French is a Romance language, both of which are part of the Indo-European Language family. They are basically distant cousins
