Triang/Hornby Freightliner Final Upgrades Buffers, brake wheels and more
Cool 3D Printer Action & Running Session.
In this final episode of the Freightliner upgrades see how my friend 3D prints buffer heads for me and how they fit on to these venerable wagons. WOW what a difference.

Nice set of videos about the Container wagons, good ideas and really improves them, I saw Charlie from Chadwick put a Small Selftapper through the underside of the Wagon into the Centre Box and it Straightens the Slight Bow of the Wagon out, worth a watch,

Perseverance in action getting those 3D made buffers to work. First time I have seen a 3D printer in action. I love your David Rose music selection at the end of your videos. Many years ago in the USA he did the music for " The Red Skelton Show." A popular TV show from 1951-1971. Bill from California

You may or may not know that at least one of these was modified as a single unit and used in Scotland for a minor traffic flow between Aberdeen and Thurso. The vehicle was fitted with through vacuum brakes and steam pipes and inserted into the Aberdeen - Inverness passenger trains and then an Inverness - Thurso service. All this made for some great and unusual mixed traffic trains, especially as this was about 1984 I think. Unfortunately I believe the traffic only lasted for about one year.

One of my first jobs, BREL engineering, was the sad task of cutting up the class 45 peaks! The bogies were converted to snow ploughs from some ,the Sulzer engines stripped down for component recovery as many parts could be used for the class 47! One memorable fate was the crash into the nuclear container test !

Oh wow, sad but interesting, Oh yes I remember that dreadful waste of a loco, was it true that the engine bolts had been loosened off?

The locomotive was purchased from BR for £16,000 give or take. It was class 46 009 and had just been withdrawn it had given BR over one million miles . The Sulzer engine was supped up to give 100mph ,the fastest a peak had ever run? I'm not sure about engine bolts being loosened if you mean on this loco for the run ? The whole experience was part of a four million quid exercise to tell Joe public that nuclear transport on rail was all safe and secure?

hello Mike, great video, i remember the peaks at St Pancras stn in the 70s,great locos and sounded like the 47s, the station however has been turned in to a circus by todays clowns using eurostar as an excuse. love the modifications on the Triang freightliners. i think the set had a Hymek back in the day.

Yes, the 47s had the same (or very similar Sulzer engines as the Peaks. The final tranche of the 46s was cancelled and the engine and other traction items used in the 47s. I think you're right about the Hymeks. They hauled Freightliners to/from/in the Western Region.

Nice modelling 🙂 A bit of trial and error is part of the fun, next time it will be a lot simpler. There's a lot to be said for older models. Little details like that brake wheel really give them a lift. I find I learn far more about a vehicle by building a kit or upgrading than I do with even the most detailed rtr stock. And that removable drop loop on the peak is bloody clever, I'll be borrowing that one! What next?

Thanks very much, I completely agree. It's very satisfying jobs like this. Glad you like the coupling loop certainly does let you keep all the buffer beam details but of course shunting becomes more tricky, but hey that's what we have shunters and station pilots for

I'd be interested in a pair of those buffer beams for my Scottish single freightliner wagon. As a P4 extremist who uses screw couplings I'd want the correctly sized version as measured by your mate.

Yes, quite often with 3D printing you need to go through a few iterations before they are exactly what you want. I'd have reprinted it rather than cutting/sanding it to shape. But you worked with what you had and made it work regardless.

Proper modelling! The fettling of parts is an art & labour of love. As well as frustrating sometimes.... It was interesting to see the detailing differences on the front buffer beam of the Peak & 47. Is this due to added detail, or to their original state?

@ModelRailwaysUnlimited That explains it. I'm a big fan of Lima diesels, though. I have a fleet of Lima 37s, amongst other classes. The relatively low cost allows this sort of collecting to happen. My Lima 47 is the distinctively livered Merddyn Emrys version.

Hi there when your friend measured the buffer beam on the FGA Freightliner, what were his measurements?? I live in New Zealand and can't find what the buffer beam measurements are, I want to do a similar thing to what you have done. My son 3D prints and he said all I need are measurements to scale down., I enjoy your videos especially the historical information, cheers

I'll ask Paul but at the start of the video and later it deals with the dimensions, for total width measure the freightliner, also for the thickness of the frame etc. I'll edit this reply when I hear back. Nice video, but these 3D prints could be so much better... unfortunately due to the printing process it's just not great for this.

@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited I think he means if they were done on a resin printer they would look even better. Resin printing can give far more detail. The ones you have are printed on an FDM printer.
