Happy birthday Uncle Sam, this video goes out to you! R.I.P. Sam Gangemi 1/29/57 - 1/13/21. Gone too soon....heaven bound, hammer down!
Needless to say, 2021 got off to a very rough start for the family. My uncle passed away after a short battle with COVID, which came as a shock and has been very difficult for us. In these unprecedented times, it's nice to be able to think of memories from the "old days", especially my childhood. Some of the most vivid memories from my childhood were the days I spent riding with my uncle in the cab of his dump truck. This thing was his pride and joy. I'm keeping the truck in good shape for right now, while it isn't being used. I've posted videos of it to RU-vid in the past, but decided to do a full in-depth review for my subscribers this time.
The truck is a 2007 Peterbilt 357 high-hood (heavy hauler), tri-axle, with a 565 HP Cummins ISX, 18-speed transmission, Eaton 3:90 rears, double-frame, set-back front axle, Hendrickson lift axle, and Benson Manufacturing dump body. He purchased it new in 2006, just before the "379 family" of models were discontinued and EPA mandates began requiring the use of diesel particulate filters (DPF's) on all trucks. Pretty neat to think that this was the last of the "good" Peterbilt trucks, and quite possibly the last high-hood 357 built (I would love to find out for certain). He put nearly 450,000 miles on the truck in the 14+ years he owned it, and always took excellent care of it. This truck was rarely seen dirty.
I am planning to practice for my CDL with this truck, so hopefully I will be able to drive it within the next year or two. When that time comes, I would like to do some driving videos from in the cab. We'll see what happens this year - hopefully the rest of the year isn't as bad as this first month was.

Thanks for the comment John. My cousin ended up purchasing the business and is now running the truck each day carrying on in my uncle's footsteps. Didn't even change the company name or the lettering on the doors of the truck - everything is exactly how my uncle left it. It's such a unique and oddball truck (and continues to turn a lot of heads), I would never forgive myself if we were to sell it. Someday when my cousin is ready to buy a new truck I'd like to buy this one back, and restore it into a tractor that I can use to haul toys around with.

That’s for sure a keeper for life. If I were in your position it would be way too valuable to get rid of. The Baltimore Pete dealership is closest to me I’ve seen some really cool stuff roll out of there. I’d say Diesel engines reached their peak in power/quality in the early 00s right before the epa wiped out reliability. My dad had an international loadstar 1700 dump truck for about a year. It was kind of a pos but I really did love the old thing. I know where it is now so I’ll probably buy it back in the next few years. Really cool old truck but that 377 is so much more badass.
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 3 года назад
I agree, the late 90's into the early 2000's really were the pinnacle of heavy on-road diesel engines. Lots of trucks with those engines are still running around making money today and they're popular engine choices for glider kits as well.

Yeah fuel is costly especially now. Caterpillars are fantastic engines and the best workhorses in my opinion and I’m always sticking with them
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 2 года назад
I agree. The 3406's and early C-15's are some of the best over-the-road engines ever built. Someday when the Cummins finally gives up the ghost, my cousin (who now owns the truck) wants to C-15 swap it.

@@MichaelTJD60 he should put a C15 back in that truck. Great truck for that engine. Was it a 475hp or a 550hp?
@MichaelTJD60
@MichaelTJD60 2 года назад
@@JacksonGuitarsPlayer03 The twin-turbo C15 ACERT's were more problematic than the earlier single-turbo models, but could be built into a reliable engine with a little bit of work. The twin-turbo ACERT in his old 379 wouldn't get more than 3.5-4 miles per gallon which is horrendous for local hauling. That one was 550 HP. He had a Ford prior to that one with a 475HP 3406E which was easier on fuel and overall more reliable.

uncle Sam new what he was doing i have drove dump truck all my life, and are trucks where always hired out, so if some one need a truck or two they would cal and ask the night before, and depending what the trucks had for power and what the truck looked like really depended on who got called first, cause you are representing, your truck out there and also the company you where working for !!!!!! but i always love how they say well that's all of power for a dump truck and i would say oh' o.k. so what power do u think i should run? so i would not let them say something dumb, and i would say i'm running around on the roads of this great country between 70 and 80,000 thousand pounds that is y i have 5-6 sometimes 7 hundred horse power and bigger breaks and all that so i can keep up with traffic and maintain that speed and the big reason, so i can get back to the job site within a normal time frame, so ya dump trucks today Carrie a heavy loads and most of the time we Carrie as much and sometimes more then the trailer trucks so,like when we work on the roads and we are hauling 24 tons of hot asphalt, and plus the wight of the truck, witch is around 25 to 30,000 pounds ya it's nice having the extra horses and more power is so much easy'er on the truck asphalt hole, i mean you have to respect it, but it's easy'er on the driver cause he don't have to shift as much and so on!!!!! but i'm so sorry that the dam co-vid got three of your family Alders, that is a big, big heart ache that you and a lot of family's had to endure because China on leashed this silent war onto the world!!!!! it was mostly for us but it got out of hand it's one of, if not the worst , and my heart, and prays go out to folks i don't know you folks but we love you, and as Americans that is what we do in times like this, we love one another, help each other, and they will pay for this God willing, we have a lot of stuff in place so when the time is right, the Eagle will fly, if you know what i mean, well i'm a CAT man to and i think if Trump would have got another 4 years we would have seen them back in the trucks!!!! and China would have for sure got there ass handed to them, i mean Joy'y is in bed with them but the American people want justice so something is going to happen,!!! but from one trucker to another, keep your head up, keep smiling and love in your heart and god to if you believe or if not that's o.k.to, you can call on him anytime, he died for all of us !!!!! just say'n !!!!!

Amen brother. It's hard to make sense in crazy times like we're living in right now, but you just have to remember that God is in control! My uncle was an independent owner/operator but he would sometimes contract 4 or 5 other local trucks to help him out depending on the job. He was the kind of driver who was never late to the jobsite and would blow the doors off all the trucks passing them on the road. Probably the fastest dump truck in the area.
