My Jack began to play with a beloved toy, one he knew that his best friend, Sugar, would then want, all to motivate her to get down off the sofa so there'd be room for him to then climb up on it. He used her sense of jealousy to make room for him to enjoy the sofa with his people. 😁

I'm glad that you've seen that dogs deceive to get what they want. I've told friends and family for years that dogs lie. That's gone over badly. I have 4 dogs right now. I know who will lie to manipulate a situation in their favor. It is funny to watch it. I'm glad you experienced it and brought attention to it. ❤

If anything dogs use deception way more than cats, the latter getting the notoriety for it. Dogs being trained to help with more of our needs ended up mirroring our behavior. However both species are loving and intelligent, just in different ways.

I had a Mini Schnauzer who was incredibly smart and hated taking his medicine. He went as far as taking the pill in his mouth, swallowing while keeping it in his mouth, and then walking to the next room to spit it up.

A few years back I was walking my dog and she stepped on an uneven sidewalk slab that was kind of sticking up. I saw her foot slide off of it and she started limping, I guess from twisting her ankle. I ended up carrying her two blocks back home. She was fine after a couple hours. The next day we went on another walk and when we got to around that same area, she looked back at me while she was walking and started limping. I told her, "no, I'm not carrying you," and she started walking normally again. She loved to be carried if she could get away with it.

Bunny sees a “stranger” in the mirror. When you ask her “who is that?” she walks right up and tries to smell the “stranger”. When there is nothing to smell she is confused and asks “Stranger, where smell?” How confusing it must be to see another dog that has no smell.

Great observation, that we humans can be The Pet. I took in a frightened cat this past winter who was so timid, she'd only come out of hiding while I was sleeping, to eat, drink, and use the litter box. Now it's the middle of May and I have been 'trained' to clean her box within a minute after she's used it, to turn on the faucet in the bathroom sink when she needs water, and to leave whatever I'm doing, allow her to 'lead' me to the couch where she'll look at me, look at the couch, look at me, look at the couch, etc. I sit on the couch and assume my position. She leaps onto my chest and stays there for sixteen hours (it seems), showing me all the places she wants scratched. Because she wants me to see everything she sees, I sometimes call her 'Lassie'. Unfamilar vehicle parked across the street? She comes to get me. Could there be something lurking under the dresser? She leads me to the suspicious spot, I've never heard an average 'meow' from her but she 'complains', loudly, almost every waking moment.

I have a pittie named Zoey. She is exceptionally smart. I know she could counicate the way bunny does. But I don't know where to start. Do you have any suggestions? And I was blown away when it became obvious that otter is learning to communicate with bunny using words. She was sealing to bunny so she was looking at bunny. Then she (or he I'm ot sure yet still,)looked at you to speak to you. Learning words from listening and watching bunny. They are wonderful. And so smart! Thank you for the videos. They are very entertaining.

She also complains loudly when she wants *anything*, no soft meows ever, just loud complaints but also loud purrs.

Yes! One of my dogs will do this sort of thing to get the coveted chair by the window. She will bark and run to the next room, look out that window as if we have a visitor. My other dog will come running and barking to see what the fuss is about, while she goes and steals his spot on the chair. The funny thing is, he continually falls for it every day lol

The sofa wasn't big enough for both people and both big dogs, so he used her jealousy of the toy to get her off the sofa. 😁 He was shrewd. He was a great dog, so was she, but he played her that way.

My dog Lucy once ran to the front door and started barking because we were eating in the back room. She then charged back and stole half of my husbands sandwich😅😅. I was impressed with how smart she was we couldn’t even be mad. She tried this again everyday for a month😂😂😂.

Huh... I don't know much about animal behavior, so why give a treat when he steals the toy? I know you said it's to prevent resource guarding/possession issues, but isn't there a fear that he might associate stealing with treats, like positive reinforcement? Or is it kind of a weighing the risks/priorities and deciding it's better to discourage resource guarding, even if there's a risk you might reward stealing? Or does he know better at this point that the treats aren't a reward but a trade? Just curious cuz I'm new to some of this stuff. Also I love the lil documentary narration.

I believe it's weighing. Also, guarding/possession issue is much, much bigger in dogs than human. Even the most loyal and peaceful dog can bite your hand to bleed if you try to get their treat away. Not all dogs do, but a lot of dogs do. This is a hard-wired instinct so how smart, social, friendly and peaceful the dog is doesn't matter a lot.

I think it's not enforcing stealing because in reality, in that moment, he wants the toy more than he wants a treat - but as he can't have the toy because he stole it, it's simply just a "fair" trade to placate him and get him to give the toy up with out issue. Might sound confusing but he isn't being "rewarded" because he's not getting what he actually wants - which is Bunny's toy. If he starts doing it *to* get a treat... That's different. But in this moment it's just a way of showing him he can't have Bunny's toys if he steals them.

Dogs can pass the mirror test. We had a glass stove front that reflected. The first time he got his hair cut, he was all happy. Then he passed the oven. He did a double take at the oven door, then ran and hid. I think dogs just get mirrors and then use them in their own way, be it play or vanity. But they get it.

The point of mirror test is not recognizing things on mirror. It's about recognizing the thing on the mirror is themselves. Bunny took months of confusing and asking to comprehend "who's the dog in the mirror" or more likely "is that really me?"

@@technocracy90 Or it could be they just get it and don't think seeing their reflection in a mirror is that odd as to worry about. We didn't train my dog about reflections. He just passed the stove every day and saw his fluffy self. Then one day he noticed he was naked and hid in embarrassment. He knew that reflection was reflecting him.

@@colleenforrest7936 If your interpretation that he hid in embarrassment is true, that can really be a proof that your dog passes mirror test. Which would be very surprising and astonishing that it means some dogs can pass mirror test without extensive help of human teaching, which was even Bunny (who seemed to be a genius of dogs) wasn't able to do. I have very limited information to make a credible conclusion, but I highly suspect he hid not in embrassment but thinking the naked dog - whoever it is, but not himself - looks scary.

@@technocracy90 oh he wasn't scared, he was moping. When he was scared, he shook and hid behind of us. But with this, he was happy before he saw himself. He did a double take at the oven door, his mood dropped and he walked away to be by himself.

This interaction happened between my dog Tully and my parents' dog Mac (both Scotties, both bright!) Tully was in Mac's bed. After staring at Tully for a moment, Mac pauses, then goes over to the empty metal food bowl and nudges it to make it rattle on the tile floor. My food hound Tully comes running over, whereupon Mac runs to his bed and gets in. I don't believe these are strategies the dogs stumble on by accident: they are planned out, which means what was believed about dog intelligence (that they couldn't use this sort of forethought) was bunk. How lucky are Otter and Bunny to have the mom they have, even though she can be duped! ;-) (Tully did it to me a few times to steal my food!)

Dogs are smarter than even "experts" think and have "learned", My CHUG tells me MANY things and he doesn't even have to use buttons, If he goes to the kitchen, he knows where his food is kept so he will stand there and stare and some times let out a small noise as to tell me HEY IM HUNGRY lol, if he stands in a particular place in the living room then I know he's wanting treats. 😊

They really are! My family dog liked fresh water replaced in his bowl and wouldn’t drink the stale water in his bowl with too much backwash. So he would sit in the middle of the kitchen floor and stare at whomever was present and then stare at the sink until we got the hint.

My dog would find my other dog's favorite toy, chew on it in front of him , then march off with it into another room. Then she'd head right back and get the toy the other left behind. I love dogs.❤

My dog used to do these manipulation tactics with her pack. If my other pup had a toy she wanted she would go get another toy, bring it to her sister and play with it beside her. Then her sister would get up to grab the new toy and she would take the one she wanted and walk away. She was extraordinary.

I still hold that Bunny is using buttons as an add-on to telepathic communication and modeling to peer teach Otter, just as we trained my students with autism to do. Luke Evans of the Australian Dog Farm also uses peer teaching with his cohesive pack of 20 mostly-shelter dogs of various breeds, to back up his own training when fostering additional shelter dogs prior to adoption. Bunny you look so adorable with your fresh groom and tassel tail. I hope your personal smell comes back soon, sweetie. Otter, you are the quintessential little brother. 🤣💖💖💖

I guess Otter & Bunny will have to come to understand the mirror as another "human" tool, just like phone, computer & video chat. No way of smelling the person on the other end of the line, so using other senses to recognize someone is probably very helpful toward their understanding of how we think, etc.

Dogs prioritize smell, not only using smell. It's like human prioritize sight but not only using sight. If we smell something, we know something is here but want more information, so we want to check the visual. Same way, when dogs see something, they know there is something. When I tell my dog "There comes grandma!" in the middle of a crowded park, he checks faces, clothes of passing people and often mistakes wrong person to his grandma. This is because at the park with like a few hundred people walking by you can't really rely on smell to locate somebody.

@@technocracy90 mammal mostly prioritise smell (like dog), while bird prioritise vision. Bird vision sees 4 colour, while we sees 3, and dog sees 2. While dog can't see well it can smell really really well so I wonder if dog communicate with each other with smell without us knowing? like for example we know male cat communicate with urine (marking territory).

Mirror test is silly. It assumes animals have the same priorities as we do. Just going to another country can show how many assumptions we have about what is "obvious" about humans are wrong.

When my older female basset used to want my lap, but my boy basset was already there, she’d run around my chair, squeaking a toy. Every time she passed us she gave a little louder squeak. Eventually, Ryan would be sucked into her invitation to play and jump down. Star would throw the toy at him and jump up in my lap. He finally figured it out and she gave it up because it didn’t work anymore. She’ll also grab a squeaky and try to distract me with it when I’m doing something she doesn’t care for, like cleaning her ears.

I see a lot of comments about the treat somehow reinforcing the toy stealing behavior. Behaviors don't necessarily need human intervention to be reinforced. Otter wanted this toy, tricked Bunny and Alexis and got what he wanted ! This behavior already got reinforced, he will do it again no question asked, nothing Alexis can do about it this time. She is working on what comes after. Imagine he does all this hard work, get this toy he really wanted, and then the human comes and takes it. It can cause a lot of frustration, leading one day to aggression or other unwanted behaviours. Maybe next time he will steal it then run upstairs so nobody can take it from him. I understand why it can be confusing, but definitely the right thing to do in this situation. Alexis knows how Otter does his tricks and why, she usually doesn't fall for it anymore. That's the only way to prevent those behaviors to be reinforced.

We know dogs understand our sounds. If I sit on the couch and say “cookie” both dogs will jump up and look at me and go to the kitchen, happy and excited because it’s the sound I make to indicate a treat for them. When they want out, they get my attention and look at the door, or go to it. When they want attention, they will purposely do things that have previously gotten my attention. The older dog knows when he wags his tail rapidly and whacks the furniture, it makes me laugh…he does it on purpose and “smiles”. The younger dog just jams her head into my thighs and leans in for hugs and pets. They are communicating. Exchanging ideas in ways they naturally can. Dogs know they can use sound to communicate…a bark or a growl with body language tells other dogs and humans information. What is new here is that they are learning they can also communicate their ideas and wants by creating a specific sound for us (that we understand) via the buttons. What is novel is being able to see bunny express complex thinking, like references to time and delayed gratification, or past events; curiosity about what things are; and the reasons behind their emotions. I’ve just come across this, and have been thoroughly enjoying watching Bunny express her thoughts in ways we humans can more easily understand. Thanks for your work!

I have four good sized dogs. And when the smallest is tired of being pushed off the couch, she will bark like commandos are landing in the back yard. Then she s l o w l y runs towards the dog door, allowing the bigger dogs to pass her. She then careens in a wide arc through the other door into the living room. This gives her unfettered access to the empty dog spot on the couch. The other 3 fall for it every time.

Dog deception: I caught my barking at the edge of the yard as if there was a stranger in order to distract the foster dog and steal his food.

our first shepherd/husky wanted some of our pork chops. He couldn't have them. He knew we would go to the door if he charged barking because it meant someone was there. he did that and we went to the door... he stopped half-way as we went past and when we came back, he was eating a pork chop. subsequent pets tried that sort of subterfuge with us and we were not fooled again.... telling them.... sorry, but we were trained by a professional. Dogs are amazing.

How Otter tricked the family into him getting Bunny's toy.... OMG!!! My dog, Toews (incredibly smart... TOO smart pittie 🤨) would do this to our (not smart... just happy to be here🥴) boxer, Louie. She would want to be on a blanket in the sun (where Louie was sleeping), so she would scheme to move him. She would come as I was working at my desk and give me a look like she wanted pets and hugs.... but she would sit just out of reach. So, inevitably I'd say, "come here". Hearing that, Louie would wake, bound off the blanket, and run to get the pets that he LIVED for. 🥰 He'd fly past the unimpressed Toews, while she smuggly settled into the pre-warmed blanket he left behind. 😏 This happened a lot. Sometimes she'd go into "the game"... and I would throw a wrench into her plans. I'd only silently wave for her to come closer. She'd slyly look over her shoulder hoping he'd be awake, see, and crave love... but he'd be snoring. She'd look back at me and reach out her paw to lamey ask please??? And I'd lift one eyebrow, shrug, and mouth ... "no". As she sulked off to the 2nd-prize, dog bed in the corner, you could tell she was grumbling, "you may have won THIS time... but that blanket will belong to me again, soon enough.

By 'stranger smell where', I think she meant the stanger in the mirror had no smell, and wanted to know where it was. Olfaction is definitely relevant, to her. Maybe if they do smellivision and use her scent, she'll say its her. Or maybe she never will. Maybe for a dog, a reflection will never be 'them'. After all, it is only a reflection, really!

I get such a kick out of Bunny communicating with you!! Do you think my 7 year old aussie/pit could learn too? She is very smart and obedient. We are together basically 24/7. And she already has a very large vocabulary. I've been teaching her words since she was a pup. People are confused the way i speak to her and explain everything. But she definitely understands. I just wonder if it's true that "you can't teach old dogs new tricks". I bought my daughter your book for her new puppy, but she wasn't interested in the dedication it would require. Give Bunny a kiss from me and Mandy. 😘

You can teach an old dog new tricks! We had a 9yr. old rescue dog who very quickly learnt new routines and words. We talk to our dogs all the time and I know this helps, yes, they can deceive,play tricks and deliberately tease you and their doggy siblings!😂😂

Monkey see, monkey do. Irish Water Spaniels have been known to teach house mates skills, like opening a cupboard or a door. They learn by observation, we did not teach them.

Yes she understands the medicine will help her a belly get well. Billi speaks also requested medicine for her UTI and it was terrible tasting and big. Absolutely amazing communication! They can understand medicine and ask for it, then I don’t see any problem with deception capability as well: it’s all to help achieve en end.

I took a cue, I think from you, and when my dog was on meds I didn’t try to hide them. I let her see me mix them into some wet food, and she was more receptive to taking them without the deception. I have to assume she had some grasp of why the food tasted funny and that it was for a good reason.

Poor Bunny, having a bad tummy. You know, even just water might help it. Water that has stood for hours, to let the chlorine evaporate.
