Triple Screen for Sim Racing [Triple Monitor Setup Guide]

After nearly a year of exclusive VR use, I recently modified my sim racing rig to support triple screens. So this video is an instructional guide about how to set up triple monitors but it's also a collection of all of the things I've learned along the way, mostly by making mistakes!
Puting together a triple screen setup for your sim racing rig not particularly complex, but there are a few potential pitfalls. And, for me, the most important aspect is selecting the right monitors and video card for the job. However, setting up triple monitor support in racing sims does differ from title to title, with RaceRoom taking the title of least intuitive sim racing title for triple screen support.
Because I know someone will ask, my triple screen sim racing setup is:

I switched from a single screen to VR, just under a year ago and I don't see myself every going back. That being said, I do miss playing AC at near max settings with a high fps with my 1060. In the future I'd like to set up my rig so I can run both VR and triples. This video will help me out a ton, when it comes time. Thanks a ton!

Thanks BCJM76 - I know what you mean. VR is incredibly immersive, and it's still my favourite way to drive. But, triples are a bit better for long stints, and for things like streaming, which is a consideration for me in the future.

Excellent video! I've also found that gsync/freesync make a huge difference to sim racing! I don't think I could now go back to 60hz, or enjoy racing without monitor sync. Keep up the good work. 😁

That's a good point CKW. Now GSync & FreeSync have better compatibility it factors into the equation in a much bigger way than before. And, for that matter, ultrawide monitors have become a much better proposition since I med the vide as well. Always lots to think about!

I 100% agree with you on your screen size, distance and with the edges align with your eyes. I am following a lot simracers but none of them mention this which I think is VERY important setup. You don't drive real race cars from the back seats. I seen people Simracing from 10 feets of the screen because of their oversized monitors, It's like driving from the trunk. I subbed to your channel instantly.

Thanks dude. Yeah, I tried more 'flat' setups, but it didn't really give the feeling of being 'in' the car. When you look at race sims that the teams use, they tend to have 180 degree curved walls. Having that peripheral vision is a pretty big deal!

Chris! Question for you: if I (should I?) overlap the bezel of the outside 2 screens so that effectively I only lose 1 bezel width of picture instead of 2, how do I compensate in iracing / asseto Corsa in the settings?

Great video Chris. Very informative and will certainly help me to get my setup up and running. I am still debating 27" vs 32" 1440p monitors. The 32" would be VA panels while the 27" would be IPS. The 27 have to sit just after my wheel, while the 32 can be behind the wheelbase in order to obtain a 180 FoV. Have you been able to test both 27 and 32 to compare the 1:1 rendering?

Hi Chris, a couple of additional questions. In Assetto Corsa, the angle between central and lateral display cannot exceed 90 degrees. My side screens are at 120 degrees from the central screen, what value should I input in AC: 60 (180-120?) ? Also should bezels be captured in both the Nvidia control panel and in AC ? or is this redundant ? I am still struggling to adjust central and lateral views. Thx.

Hey real nice videos you have there Chris. I'm thinking about getting back into simracing because of videos like yours. I´d like to ask a question, can you combine screens in the way that you use for example a wide screen 3.840 x 1.080 in the middle and two 1920 x 1080 at the edges. Do you have any experience with that? Shouldn't be a problem as long as the screens have the same vertical resolution and the same screen height, right? Greetings

hi chris, thanks for the detailed video. Now i have a few questions but first ill explain MY situation. my set up will be in my pc room and on that same set up ill be playing shooters and sim racing. 1. if i set my 3 screens to be one big screen, will i be able just play on one screen ( the middle one) when i play shooters by just shutting down the 2 side screens? or will i have to go in the nvidia setting pannel everytime i want to switch frome triple screen sim racing to one screen first person shooter? 2. also i was thinking going for 2x26.3 screen as my actual screen has that size.. do you think its way too small or is it ok? thanks a lot

Good informative videos Chris, I'm about to buy all new screens to replace my mismatched setup, would you go with 27 or 32 for an ideal iracing triple setup? plenty of opinion out there but I can position the screens as close or as far away as needed so I'm just wondering what you run personally (resolution is of no concern as I currently run 1440 triples and happy with the performance)

I'm in the process of planning my first custom built PC (assuming GPU's ever exist at MSRP again) and one of the last things I'm looking at is what it would take to do something like this and if my rig could handle it. Thanks for dropping your GPU card spec and port configuration. If a GTX 1080 can take it, I'm sure a GTX 3060 Ti or 3070 should handle it fine (I hope).

Using a headtracker (not eye tracker!) is another great option to use with a single screen setup. I only use trackir or my rift. No need to throw money into 2 extra monitors + high end graphic card. Running all my sims in qhd @ stable 60 fps with a 980ti.

hi chris, i dont know if you get asked with this question frequently. Considering I have already put the correct measurements in the in-game settings of the triple screen, how do I know I'm sitting in the correct position? My problem is that even if I have put the correct measurements, it seems like I'm seated far away, like when i look at the center console (aircon, head unit) they seem to be farther than how I imagine them should be. I have tried matching the size of the virtual hand to mine but it seems I'm still too far away. However when I move the seat forward, I lose the passenger wing mirror and I dont think that's wrong either because I see in videos that 3x27" monitors will give you a perfect FOV with both mirrors visible. If it helps, my setup is 3x27" monitors as well and my eyes are 600mm away from the center monitor.

Are your screens edge to edge? Or does the middle sit forward the others? I’m curious how this affects nvidia surround. Considering the bezel widths are unequal I’m wondering if I should set it up with half of the bezel width.

This is an old video but i avoid surround like fire, takes forever to set it up and swap between single 144hz and triple in surround mode. I assign profiles in monitor switcher and use in game options to adjust, even if it means changing setting files.

Hi Chris, great video. But I have a question, maybe you can help me. I want to go to 3 monitors using an LG 34 ultrawide GL750 and others two 27 LG GL750. Is same model but the biggest is ultrawide and the 27 are not. All is 1080p, and same height size. Do you think this is going to work with nvidia surround? I have a rtx 3080. I am looking forward into a 3 monitor setup as I would use them only for racing games. I mainly play AAA games, competitive games and racing games. My only use of the 3 monitors simultaneous would be in those racing games. Now, should I buy 2 of the same monitor that I have knowing that I will not use all three in all games I play ? OR Should I buy 2 same monitors (60-75hz, IPS, 24") at a lower price ?

Chris, I just got triple 27” 1440p (xb271hu) I’m not 100% happy. It’s a bezel free monitor but the bottom bezel isn’t. It sticks out 4 or 5mm, so trying to line them vertically on a angle is a challenge. I’m currently under lapping the two side monitors behind the middle monitor so I can’t see light between the bezels. It’s probably not a good enough reason to exchange them. They are a high end monitor costing $900aud each. Maybe you can make me feel better some how?

Hi Chris, thank you for this very helpful video. I already have got 3 DELL P2715Q 4K monitors and I am looking at upgrading my PC to use them for sim racing. What GPU would recommend to drive the 3 diplays in their native resolution ? From your video, I understand that a 1080ti will not be enough for 3*4K. Should I get 2 of these or go for one of the new 2080 or 2080ti instead ? Thanks for your help.

Hey Stephane - it really depends on what settings you want to run your sims on. I've found that a 1080Ti will manage 60fps on max settings in pretty much all of the sims for my 3x1440p setup... but only just. So, you may find that by turning down a few power hungry settings, like AA, you may be ok. That all being said, a 2080ti looks to be quite a bit faster than 2x 1080ti cards, and that's before you take into account the issues surrounding SLI. So my gut feel is that a 2080ti is the way to go... oh, and you get RTX too.

good on ya for putting this together, it can be a nightmare for new sim racers and where nvidia are concerned. i always had amd cards, eyefinity is simple to set up but when i bought my 1080ti it took ages to set the triples up. What cable are you using for your tablet ? you say your running it off of your graphics card.

Hey spankthemunkey1 - thanks man. The screen I'm using for the dash display is actually a 7" monitor designed for vidiographers, not a tablet - so you can just use a normal HDMI. I was using a tablet with the Sim Hub software to transmit the data over wifi. Honestly, both work very well, it was just a bit easier to mount the monitor.

i got triple 240hz monitors, all i need is a wheel now! cant wait to get one. i have so many racing games but its so boring to play with kb/controller.

at 9:10 you say iracing does its measurements backwards so you put 130 into the box? it looks like thats your FOV at 130 and your angles were 45 not 50. can you clarify this? confused alright!

My 3080 ti have three display ports and one hdmi, I currently have two monitors operating at qhd and valve index taking those ports, I tried connecting extra monitor with hdmi but Windows does not detect it. I consider retiring two of my monitors to get two extra copies of my main one, I wonder if I can use some sort of usb hub to drive all three AND index via display port, or will I have to employ switching shenanigans to either use triples or VR? I kinda want the best of both worlds.
