Great video, nicely done. Even got me thinking about upgrading to this kind of planner. I got my last thicknesser after watching your first review you did years ago.
That Titan thicknesser is still a bargain! Especially with it being a 2 in 1. I’ve loved having the wider bed on this one though. Quite a few brands with very similar sizes and specs so worth keeping an eye out for any deals to be had 👍
Having owned one for a few years I wouldn’t recommend this model. It runs off through time I had problems after a year it can be fixed but keeps happening just my opinion
This is 4th or 5th variation of B&Q's MacAllister planer I've had for the last 10 years, same motor, same frame, same 1,6mm per revolution etc, just slightly different in and out feed tables. Even the magnets for extracting the blades are the same. Great little machine, but if you want good finish, I'd run it at 1/4 turn per pass, maximum half. 1100 watts is not much and struggling, even with softwoods. I've run oak, maple, walnut, iroko, teak trough it, on thin passes , not a bother.
Great review, I've got the same planer that I bought ex display for about £175 IIRC. Certainly a good budget machine but like you say snipe is an issue. The cutter block and feed rollers are about 50mm apart which I think explains the snipe, I can improve it on long lengths by using infeed and outfeed rollers set just slightly high, for smaller lengths of timber I use longer sacrificial runners at the side of what i'm planing. Still a decent machine for the money though.
Thats an absolute bargain mate! It is a real shame about the snipe issues, otherwise it’s a brilliant bit of kit. Well there is the problem then! If the gap between the feed rollers and cutter head is 50mm it has to be the issue. The snipe is far too consistent. Good shout about having the in-feed and out feed a little higher, will give it try 👍
I looked at it and was lucky in using one before I bought it. I found the snipe a problem so did the guy that owed it. I ended up getting a very good deal on a dewalt 733 and that gives no snipe at all. I think all the bench top models sound like jet planes😂 another great review joe👍
You can safely use planer and the extractor from one extension lead. As these are inductive loads, just turn these on separately. You will not be getting to 13 amp
@@AverageJoesJoinery Someone more qualified can verify the data: 1100W is roughly equal to 4.6Amp (1100/240), so well below 13amp, but as its inductive motor - starting can momentarily reach 13Amp, but so momentarily, that it should not trip the fuse. You should be able to safely run all your tools at once ;) Great review though!
Hi joe. I am looking at getting one of these as it compares well with the Dewalt and Makita at about £200 more. Take a look at you tube. Reduce planer snipe Making a new compact planer bed where the Frito is used. May be helpful with your issue 👍🏻
I`ve got the Makita version of thicknesser, £200 more expensive, still get snipe and it sounds like a bloody jet taking off, nature of the beast I`m afraid, excellent vid as usual 👍
I’ve heard some large industrial thicknessers running and they barely hum. I don’t know how they do it 😅 I can certainly take some noise to save some thousands though haha
Thats unfortunate mate! Hopefully more brands and outlets are able to branch out into that market. It was very slow for years here in the UK but we’re slowly starting to see more interest. Still miles behind the US though 😅
Hi, can you please tell me how much the distance is between the infeed and outfeed rollers? I'm just wondering what the very minimum length of workpiece is that you can put through without risks. I know that the manual says 380mm, but I believe it's smaller
Great review Joe. I actually found you through your titan thicknesser/planer review and intended to get it on the strength of your follow up video. For various reasons I still haven’t bought one yet and I’m glad I haven’t because I think I would be after an upgrade. You said at the time you rarely used the planer so although there isn’t a planer on this machine, for a wider bed etc I think it’s not too much of a problem. I’ll have a little think but I’m 99% sure which way I’m going to go. Cheers Joe.
Thanks for sticking with me for so long mate 😅 I really thought I’d use the planer on the Titan loads but I used it less than a handful of times. Still, for the money its a bargain to get 2 tools in 1. If you can do without the planer then I’d definitely lean towards the wider bed. Always worth taking your time mate 👍

I went down to the local waste recycling Center to drop off some rubbish last week and paid a visit to their “reuse shop” and collared an icon thicknesser for $10 and guess what?? It is one of these!!! Triton must have bought them out so now I can get the one bevel gear that’s missing ($10)and we are as good as gold👍👍👍👍
Great video. I'm from Argentina, and I bought this thicknesser on Amazon. I had a noise problem in the gearbox. I took apart half the machine, lubricated all the gears and for now it's resolved. However, I bought the spare part, for the complete gearbox, in case it causes problems in the future. In general it is a great machine, the snipe problem is cumbersome, but solvable.
Joe, i dont know how you tube works but i asked you a question under the vid(4 years on) about titon thicknesser. Dont know if you get notified or got your hands full. I have owned my Triton TPT125 for around a year and I'm extremely pleased with it. I must say that I totally agree with your assessment on this thickness planer 100%. It cuts great, it's nice and compact, it's heavy and sturdy with long/heavy lengths of timer and for the price it's not too bad. The only two bad points are the 50mm of snipe at the beginning and end of my work pieces and WOW is it loud, I use it with ear protection. I can live with the noise, but I have to use a sacrificial piece of wood to get rid of the snipe which is clearly a waste of good woos. Nice video by the way, keep them coming...

Thanks Chas! The Titan is still a bargain, especially for a 2 in 1 machine. I’ve been really liking having the wider bed on this one though. Thicknessers seem like a luxury until you get one and then realise how necessary they really are. Especially if you want to save money and time in the long run😅

I've been looking for a thicknesser for some time and this video has convinced me that this'll do the job, I had looked at DeWalt machines but written them off due to being outside my budget. Also Makita was on the short list but a couple hundred pounds more than the Triton. I've now ordered the Triton 125, thanks for your honest review Joe!
If anyone can let me know the height that would be great. The official figure is 49cm but I don't know if this includes the handle and it needs to be smaller to fit under my table for storage!
Mine seems to be accurate out of the box but to be honest I never trust indicators, I’ll use it to get within a millimetre or 2 and then sneak up on it when I need to be precise

Great no nonsense review ... Top Marks. I bought mine about the same time as yourself & Yes, its a game changer when it comes to reducing timber costs. I have bought up a lot of pre war furniture for pennies & sometimes nothing & have some great mature, seasoned & stable timber in my humble garage. I still have my SIP jointer & that's great for roughing out & getting timber half way respectable. The Triton is probably the best £300 I ever spent on wood machinery & I am speaking as a hobby woody. Great review & a solid machine. Good One.

I grew up on The New Yankee Workshop 😂 I think it’s easier to differentiate between thicknesser/thickness planer and planer/jointer by using both terms 😅
Thanks Joe, a good honest review, lots of detailed information. I had considered the Titan previously but it really is too narrow, the Titan looks much better with the wider cutting capacity. One for my wish-list! You should be able to find a free decibel meter for your smartphone to measure noise levels. Not 100% accurate but will give you a good idea
Where do you get your hardwood, Joe? All I can seem to find is either PAR oak which is far too expensive or softwood...am I missing something? You see guys in the US can just pop to Home Depot but I can't find anywhere I can go...
@@MKRM27 yeah, I've tried that...my local timber yard is where I can get PAR oak or building grade softwood. Google isn't showing anywhere either - there are a few online order places but I can't find anywhere that has a decent selection that you can actually go to.
Your snipe issue starts with the two jackscrews in the center of the cutter head. They allow the cutter to tip as wood enters and leaves. A planer with four jackscrews gets around this somewhat by reducing the tipping. Expect to spend about US$650 or more to get that feature. Dewalt makes a four screw model that gets good reviews.
There is more to that I think as the Dewalt 733 is the same sort of design with 2 screw shafts and 4 corner posts. Each has 2 collars each corner of the motor housing to guide the cutting head and feed rollers up and down, so why is the Dewat not affected with this? Looking at the exploded view of both, the Triton and Dewalt you can see those guide lugs in each corner on the Dewalt are taller, maybe that is what to look out for.
Exactly the one I've had for about four years now and it's a beast! As 99% of wood I use has been dragged out of a skip, bush or puddle it's a vital bit of kit for me. The blades are dead easy to change to 😀
I would guess the feed rollers are 50mm either side of the cutting head. Snipe occurs in that transition where the workpiece is supported from one to both rollers. A couple of light passes with a smoothing plane usually gets rid of it.
I think that is the case mate 👍 someone else commented mentioning it was a 50mm gap. It’s certainly not deep snipe which a huge benefit when it comes to getting rid of it but would be nice if it could be avoided consistently
Just got one . Was initially hesitant because of the smallish motor compared to other planners as I'm mostly planing old hardwoods .I also heard lots about the snipe and the noise levels so I was hesitant but finally ,because the price was so competitive, I took the plunge !. First job was reducing 15mtrs of mahogany about 4mm . I took 5 x 3mtr through about .8mm (half a turn) at a time . This left me with no snipe whatsoever on any of the boards and an absolutely beautiful smooth finish on all the lengths. All went through on the standard fold down beds . Didn't find it that noisey either .what a great machine for the money. Loads of adjustments means you can really dial it down but mine is brilliant
Hi mate, another 2 or so months down the line, how are you finding the machine now? I really need a thicknesser, had my heart set on this one because of the price but that sniping thing is really putting me off. I can’t buy one of these and then just live with that problem it would break my heart.
