All hail the beastie's rescue, from it's cruising the carpet scene, bushes & bearings, fine fettle indeed, in crevices seldom clean. But their engineers, they saw this day, & they knew that grit is nasty, so it was locked away, from the light of day, inside a rubbery pasty. Triumph Hinkley eh? - those boys certainly knew how to throw a boat over a hedge. Merry Xmas : )

Hinckley had some good stuff going on back then . ie zirc? fittings (grease nipples) and powder coat .(although they hadn't discovered zinc chromate's advantages) big old frame backbones and Japanese calipers to name but a few.. This bike is going to be spanky ! Peace and love brother and hugs to you both 👍🏻☮❤❤😊

Sure thing brother, a well put together bike, it's a shame they couldn't make their mind up on the wheels, some models had alloy wheels, which was pretty good, but mine had the Italian tin wheels with the Disney chrome!... and then they went and spoked them with stainless... good to see that 20yrs ago they hadn't quite abandoned the British Leyland concept of designing bikes by committee! But easy stuff to put right, and hopefully this will be a spanker when it's done! Keep safe, keep smiling and keep Maud away from the Sherry, you know how lary she gets! Merry Xmas, D&Px

450 degrees C is a high enough temperature to change the temper of the bolts..... You are basically annealing them, changing their characteristics and weakening them, that may not be critical for some bolts, but in this application it's not great advice as these fixings are part of the braking system and have a specific torque setting.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 года назад
With every respect mate not so, it's my understanding to anneal metal it needs to be over 800 degrees and go non-magnetic, then cool slowly and naturally... heating this way and quenching doesn't anneal them, followed this advice from the blacksmith channels, and it's always worked pretty well.
@adven999
@adven999 3 года назад
@@Moonfleet41 A full anneal yes... but there is also 'Process Annealing', this starts at around 260 degrees C and up to 760 degrees C depending on the steel alloy. The process of hardening and tempering of steel is easily affected by further heating and cooling cycles and depending on how the heating and cooling is applied this can soften or harden the material changing the design characteristics of steel. The point is that on a safety critical fastener you no longer be sure that it will perform as intended. There are many different alloys of steel but most steels can lose up to 50% of their strength in the 400 - 500 degree C range.
@daveinwla6360
@daveinwla6360 3 года назад
@@Moonfleet41 Is "going non-magnetic" an indication to watch for in the absence of, say, an infrared thermometer? Is the test of absence of attraction to a magnet, or disappearance of prior magnetization?

Did you ask wemoto about a spare bearing/bushing for the top of the YSS shock???? Mentioned in the video where you took it out about my YSS shock in the Divi 900, needing a new top bush due to wear. 1 guy in leeds apprently does them, but its seriously silly cash for one, AND it comes in about 5 bits, and you have to purchase each piece. Cant fault the shock, love it in the divi 900. Makes sooo much difference 1 up, 1 up with luggage, 2 up... but that upper bearing/bush is a bit of a shock and a hard pill to swollow.

Great vid fella, Jsut started watching again after a few years. Loved the oil quenching. Just wondered if this needs further treatment like a surface oiling in future or whether it will protect against rust for a few years. Also any ideas whether this adversely affects the structural strength of the bolt or should this be tempered? Do you know if there are any benefits apart from cost to using used oil as opposed to fresh oil? Cheers
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 года назад
Cealn fresh golden oil gives a yellow tinted shiny finish, carbon laden sump oil gives the black silky finish, and clear oil like Baby oil gives no colour change, and you can buff them up too.. 'Oil bluing' causes no issues as you're not getting the metal hot enough to cause any changes..!

Hi del love the video doing good progress so far can't wait to see her done. I have a question why did you hear the bolt up and dip it in oil and how long will it stay black for ? Say hi to penny and I hope you both are well and safe 👍👍
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 года назад
Hi mate, it's a simple ancient technique or process called oil burning, or blueing, you simply heat to about 400c and quench in oil, it embeds the oil in to the surface, or micro-structure, of the metal, which waterproofs and protects it, you can use clean oil, which gives a golden finish to bright silver steel, or you can use black sump oil which because it contains so much carbon, gives you that black finish, and it lasts about a couple of years in daily weather, but if you keep it clean then like any metal surface it'll stay in shape! Merry Christmas to you too, and a safe and happy New Year!

@@Moonfleet41 Nice! There are also commercial lubricants, such as Lock-Ease which contain graphite, that would also work in the place of dirty engine oil. Arco once made an engine oil that contained graphite as an extreme pressure ingredient, and today there is Krex Graphite Engine Lubricant sold as an oil additive.

Hey Del, I see you always use YSS when you need a shock. I am wondering if you have an opinion on YSS vs. Hagon? I got a YSS for my bike a few years back after hearing about them on one of your videos. They are good quality shocks!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 года назад
The YSS are indeed good quality shocks mate, but i don't "always" use them, i have with this project, but my T120 Bonneville has Fox Shocks, my Kawasaki Streetfighter build has a Nitron shock, and the Dyna wide glide got treated to Ohlins.. i just go with what i can afford for each given project according to budget.. The very best value for money of all is always TEC shocks and ive used those on several projects... but unfortunately i have never used Hagon shocks myself, nor had them on a bike ive bought,, so i can't really comment on ho good they are mate.. they do have a good reputation though.

Nice trick with the magnetic socket at 13:43 . How did you magnetize the socket?

You've mentioned annealing material in the past and how it softens the metal, isn't heating these bolts up the way you've illustrated doing the same thing? I'm just thinking from a safety point of view that weakening bolts is probably a bad thing ey
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 3 года назад
Annealing is a specific process Dan, heat to bright cheery red which is about 850c, the metal goes non magnetic, then let it cool as slowly as possible.. and that will anneal it... but this process is totally different, you only heat to between 400 / 450c, until the metal just starts to show a change in colour, once you see a very dark dull red, then quench it quickly in oil... it doesn't alter the molecular structure like annealing does, it just burns the oil into the surface micro structure of the steel and as such weatherproofs it... Its a process that goes back thousands of years, and medieval weapons and armour were weatherproofed this way, even the Romans did it... check it out mate, it's something the blacksmith channels do all the time.
