In this video, I show how to check and adjust valve clearance and also set cam chain timing on my 2018 Triumph Tiger 1200 XRx motorcycle as part of my 32,000 km (20K mile) service.
In order to get access to the camshafts, you'll need to remove the body panels, fuel tank and air box. Check out my 16,000 km service video where I show how to remove and install these: • Triumph Tiger 1200 - F...
You might also need to drain the coolant and get the coolant hose out of the way. Check out my coolant change video in case you need to do that: • Triumph Tiger 1200 - C...
Also check out my spark plug change video which is also required as part of the 32,000 km service: • Triumph Tiger 1200 - S...
You'll also need to purchase the Triumph Service Kit (Part Number T3990016), which has all the new camshaft & crankshaft cover gaskets, o-rings, as well as new spark plugs, oil filter, air filter needed for a complete 32,000km service. You can purchase this from your Triumph dealer or online from eBay for example.

What a fantastic detailed, thorough and sequential process. I’ve worked/built many Harley Davidson engines and while Triumph’s are a different beast your presentation was excellent and easily understood. Anyone familiar with twisting wrenches would find this extremely beneficial. Thanks for taking the time to video and share. (Just wish more service tech’s were as particular as you are) Great work👍🏻

Hey! Really appreciate the kind words! Yeah I when I was getting into working on my bikes, watching other people on RU-vid and reading forums really helped me out a lot! And i feel working on your own bike makes you enjoy riding it more too. So if i can help just one person get into motorcycle maintenance, i feel like it was worth it!

Thanks for the walkthrough! I just did this on my tiger. HUGE help, especially giving the torque specs for all the bolts and the part number for the service kit. 1 question if you have the answer. The service kit came with a c-clip. Any idea what that's for?

Awesome! Hope it went well! About the circlip, I didn’t know what it was for either :). I remember most people on the forums saying they didn’t know either but one guy said it’s for the side stand when you’re lubricating it

You are amazing mate at what you do with the amazing tiols and setup you have. I live in SG too and I wonder if there is any chance I could swing by your place or maybe meet up or something? I ride a Triumph Trophy SE 1215 and I am all for DIYs myself too. Keep soaring with the amazing videos brother. Cheers.

Great video. Thanks for sharing with us. I have a question for you. When you were checking for TDC on cylinder 1, how did you know it was on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke? If you got it wrong, wouldn't the ignition timing be out 180 degrees? Thanks
@eazyontwowheels
@eazyontwowheels Месяц назад
Great question! Before removing the cam shafts and cam chain, and right before the timing marks on the cam sprockets line up and right before you can lock the crank with a 6mm rod I.e. TDC of cylinder 1 in the combustion stroke, you’ll see a little timing mark on the crank gears that get locked when a 6mm rod is inserted. Pay attention to that mark and lock the crank at that exact spot when re-installing the cam shafts and cam chain.

I have the same motorcycle, also in the same color! thank you for your videos! On my Tiger I've noticed a vibration in the front zone at 3000 rpm, I can't understand where that noise is coming from, do you have the same problem? thank you in advance, cheers! And happy new Year
@eazyontwowheels
@eazyontwowheels 6 месяцев назад
There is noticeable vibration from about 135 km/h or so for me. But I attribute that to the inline triple engine, which is known for this. I don’t notice any major vibration so low in the rev range though

Can you tell me what the tensioner tool and 0.6 nm is for? Thank you !
@eazyontwowheels
@eazyontwowheels 3 месяца назад
Ah the tensioner tool and the 0.6Nm torque tool is to apply the correct amount of tension on the cam chain when setting the cam timing (aligning the timing marks on the cam sprockets), since the tensioner has been taken out and nothing is applying tension on the chain
@gregorywardlow3612

I have a problem with my cam chain rattling when I first start the engine when warm. I noticed you draining the oil from the cam chain tensioner before re-setting it. Is there a check valve in the oil supply that makes the draining procedure necessary? If so, I'm thinking mine might be leaking by when the motor is warm, causing the rattling sound on starting up.
@eazyontwowheels
@eazyontwowheels 24 дня назад
Sorry for the late reply. Didnt see your message until now. Yes there is check valve inside the tensioner that controls oil flow and maintains pressure on cam chain.

How long would you say it takes to check the valve clearances including tank removal and tank replacement
@eazyontwowheels
@eazyontwowheels 9 месяцев назад
If you're doing everything for the first time, including taking out the body panels and fuel tank, I would keep 3 days free to take your time and do it properly. If you've taken out the body panels and fuel tank before, you should be able to get valve clearance done in 2 days. I took 3 1/2 days, but if I wasn't filming and if I worked more than 5 hours each day, I think I could have done it in 2 days.

Awesome job!! One question - why did you loosen the (4) screws on the end of the Cam wheel? Also, I am assuming you relocked the crankcase prior to taking out the cams.
@eazyontwowheels
@eazyontwowheels 7 месяцев назад
Thanks! 🙏🏽 You’ll have to loosen the 4 bolts on the cam sprockets to set the cam chain timing. Once the cam chain timing is right, you can torque in new fasteners on the cam sprockets. And yes, best to lock the crank before taking out the cams :)
@rlwilding

Makes sense did it this morning….I need your opinion - all of my inlet measurements are 0.10 mm bottom end of the spec. Manual says I am fine but would you shim down?

Kinda helpful, but would have been much more helpful if you’d have show yourself actually doing it instead of saying this is what you need to do and then showing it done. Doesn’t give an accurate idea of how long it’ll take this way either.

I did film a lot of it but had to cut out most of it otherwise the video would be too long. But I’ll try doing more of that in my future videos and improve my video creation and editing skills to keep the length down :)
