The Westlake High School seniors doing a farewell version of trombone guillotine on senior night 2016. They called it "trombone suicide," but it is more commonly known as "trombone guillotine."
Our entire brass section was doing this in the 70s and 80s. My best friend actually hit me in the face with his brand new trumpet. The trombones had no mishaps. We had done this for all 4 years of high school. We didn't call it "suicide" we called it "head chops".
As a non american I don't get the point of this. Instruments are there to be played and not ment to twirl around. Composure and not such wriggling where people can be easily hurt. Sure it looks funny and maybe cool. But for what? Speaking as a player too.
@@Someone-wg3pv fun. im not american either, but it doesnt matter where your from, your able to see that theyre enjoying themselves. sure its dangerous and mabye its not the intent of the object but its such a joy too use things not as intended. like, chairs with wheels arent supposed to make you nausous, but in the moment its fun, a challenge mabye. 'i wonder how long i can spin in that chair without stopping'. alot of the things that we do are just because we think its 'funny' or 'cool', its how we've fixed our boredom for ages. take rush e on the piano for an example! its stupid, and obviously not possible irl but its a fun challenge and has even been the reason some people learn piano lmao. /lh

doing this on a bench would make me so nervous omg, lose balance or control of your core and not only do you take out the person next to you, you fall down stairs
And that’s why we the people of marching band always work on core…for an aggravating month in high school. Boring as hell but it’s necessary to have good marching

This is easier than actually playing the instrument. Whether it's dancing, playing an instrument... and doing whatever this is, you need to be able to follow the rhyme and nothing goes wrong. You go off beat and you get some damage. Stakes are higher, of course... but just don't mess it up and nothing happens. But obviously people who have never touched an instrument before would understand that and would more easily get impressed by this.
I was on the drum line for 3 years in high school. Prior to that it was percussion in the middle school band. I thought I’d sit here and write a bit about my experience but I’m a lot more emotional trying to than I thought I would be. I’ll just leave it at: those were some of the greatest memories of my life to date. Thank you Timber Creek Regiment. From the bottom of my heart. @@sparkstudies1675 there is the danger that the main part of the tbone would crash into another, causing damage that would probably make the instrument sound like garbage or not play at all

Impressive ??? I thought the way to impress with a trombone is by playing the instrument well. Could any of them actually play the instrument ? And why were they dressed like mini storm troopers ?
As a former trombone player it's cool to watch these kids working together and having fun. In middle school I played the trumpet. In HS, I initially resisted learning the trombone, but I'm so glad I switched because the trombone was much more fun for me.
its so scary the fact that their movements have to be ON POINT one mistake could get you hit in the face pretty badly. and if you trip over, even worse of an injury

I’m not monetized - my reward is reading your nice comments and when you like and sub. My son is one of the trombone players. This was his senior year in the band. He was a drum major and borrowed a trombone from a friend so he could do this one last time with the kids he had played with since middle school. Fun note - the band marched in the Rose Parade a few weeks later, which was awesome! I wanted to address the most common comments. - They called this "trombone suicide" at our school, but I've heard it called "trombone guillotine" by most people. I made he title "trombone guillotine" so I wouldn't attract people expecting to see a suicide (something I would never share on YT, even if I had a video of that!). - The blue trombone is a P-bone. The trombone players used it in the stands, mostly for fun. They don’t march with it. - There were no injuries in the making or practice for this. The rehearse without trombones first and then move to using their instruments. If someone gets off rhythm, they duck down and stay down until they can get back on track.
We've done this at my school in years past with Mellophones, Baritones, Trumpets, Trombones, and Tubas. I've done it quite a few times (Tuba player), and it is so fun!!

This just brought back so many memories of my high school marching band years. I was a flute player and we adapted our own version of this to do with the trombones ahaha. I'm 26 now and wish I could re-live those memories of being in the stands.

I love the 2 duck maneuvers they pull off. Some of them are very delicate and reserved so they can’t damage their instruments. The others decide to live life on the edge and risk banging the hell out of their instrument on the metal bench
It was fun to see the trombones in my band do this last year. Maybe I can get them to do it this year even though the seniors (that we’re amazing) left.
I was a part of percussion and we had this thing called “the theme” where we would play it at every football game and the band directors thought one of the students just made it up and it sounded cool which is why they let us play it, but it wasn’t made up… it was the PH theme
at basketball games we had a drum kit and they would switch off doing riffs every basket, except all of them were suspiciously similar to the ph theme lol.
I always love these things. Like, I know it's simpler than it looks once you know the importance of the drum cadance, but it still never ceases to impress me.
As a former trumpet, dancing in the stands with our instruments was super fun. During my senior year, after our halloween game we replaced one of our songs in our show with another, and that song had all the trumpets dance. I was the most recognizable on field because I put the most energy into my dancing
they never let us do this bc there were too many of us 😢 30 trombones, and one person gets out of sync… it would be a nightmare for every single one of us

Reminds me of our trumpet section doing this during a game for fun, I turned around and I just see the trumpets (who have never practiced doing this before) doing suicides, and honestly it went pretty well
What would have made this more impressive is if they could've played a note/cord in their down time. Then, then, it would've been worth buying a new bone after the eventual fall of doom.
I guest directed your band at the last home game! My son who is one of these trombones graduated in 2017. His younger brother was a drum major and graduated in 2021. Many seniors know him. Good times!
Oh yes what fun! I was in marching band back in junior high and it’s a blast doing this kind of fun stuff. It was always a lot of rehearsal and hours and hours of practice and usually it paid off just like this!🥳 These guys were great. Way to go! ☺️
This reminds me of the musical skit If I Were Not Upon This Stage (which is similarly difficult to pull of without thwacking someone cross the head with a heavy object)
My HS brass section did this at a concert. One girl started laughing at something and forgot to duck. She ended up in the orchestra pit. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt and thought it was hilarious.
I just realized the pattern is the exact same for every person. Nonetheless it’s still probably difficult for everybody to do this in sync at the same time cause someone would mess this up
One of the hardest parts of these kinds of things is that worrying that you'll screw it up _is_ how you screw it up. If you get too much in your head, you'll hesitate or get off count.
