Grill Girl receives a ten-year-old grill from a neighbor that isn't working. She goes step by step to find the problem and fix it. In this case, the gas regulator that has stopped working. There is no gas at all getting to the burners in the grill. Grill Girl makes the fix with the replacement of the regulator and shows how to safely remove and replace the part. She also goes over the other pieces in the grill that might need to be replaced, including the cooking grids, heat plates, burners, and ignitors. The grill shown here is a Charmglow 720-0036-HD sold in 2005 & 2006 and sold in Home Depot stores.

Good work, Grill Girl! I think you solved my grill problem. I heard a sort of "pop" about 15 minutes into grilling chicken. Then. only 2 of 5 burners would light and I could not get it above 250 degrees. I also changed tanks- the first thing you did- and after I did none of the burners would light. Prior to that "pop" I had probably cooked on it over a hundred times, especially during this pandemic. This was the first problem I have experienced with it, other than an empty propane tank. Thanks again!

Thanks for the insight. Grill wasn't lighting. Refilled the tank. After your video, I thought it was going to be the regulator. But when you said to listen as you unscrew from the tank, I didn't hear anything. So, I tried to be more careful to make sure it was seated properly and voila...it started. Great help though and much appreciated!

Thanks for the video. I have a char broil that is about 10-15 years old. All I see is the standard regulator and hose assembly, but mine is different. It does not have the nut on the end. Can you tell me what type I should look for and get? Thanks
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 6 лет назад
Hi Kenneth! Indeed you are correct! Charbroil manufactured some grills where the regulator was crimped directly onto the manifold. This means their customers are required to replace the entire manifold when something goes wrong the with regulator. We hate to see that for their customers because regulators go out a few times over the lifetime of a grill. Unfortunately, this manufacturing choice takes a $20 repair up to a $60-$70+ repair. The way to check the price and availability of that part is to go to charbroil.com directly and enter your model number. Your model number should be on a little metal plate on the back of your grill. Hopefully, it's not as expensive as I remember! But in the off-chance that you need a new grill, let us know! We have a few ideas :)
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 6 лет назад
PS, usually that part is called "regulator hose valve assembly" or something similar.
@kennethrichmond6206
@kennethrichmond6206 6 лет назад
Thanks for the reply and help. I reconnected the regulator hose assembly to the tank and it was working for me. I thought resetting the regulator would only work for a low flame problem and not a no flame problem? This was the most inexpensive gas grills when I bought it so it may be time for a new one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again.

GrillPartsSearch sells high quality USA-Made grill by the manufacturer Modern Home Products. It's the brand I have on my deck. If you're looking for a cheaper option, I find that grills made by Onward Manufacturing Company are very decent quality/price. OMC for short, they sell a variety of brands. I believe you can even find many on Amazon. Hope this helps!

I have a six burner (3 ignition) set up and my grill heats up perfectly fine BUT when I attempt to lower the temperature to medium or below on my first 2 burners (ignition 1), the flame goes out either in a few minutes or when I close the lid (whichever comes first). Works fine no matter what the control knob is at on the other 4 burners. Any ideas? Possibly manifold valve?
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 6 лет назад
Thanks for the question Anthony! It sounds like a gas flow problem for sure. My guess is that you have decreased gas flow which isn't noticeable when you have the burners on full blast, but is a big enough difference at the low-setting that it's causing the burners to not even have enough gas to stay lit. Still, the first thing I would recommend is replacing the regulator. The reason is that a new regulator is inexpensive and easy to replace. With 6 burners, you should have a high-flow regulator to make sure there is enough gas getting to all burners. That's not usually what's sold in stores, so be careful to look at the btu rating. If you want to buy online here's a link: grillpartssearch.com/product/RHA36.html If that doesn't fix the problem, you can remove all the burners and clear them out with pressurized air of a small cleaning brush. Sometimes, spiders or other insects can build webs or bring debris into the grill over a period of disuse (like winter). Even the smallest blockage can affect gas flow, so after cleaning the burners you can move on to the manifold itself. However, like I mentioned before, the regulator is the easiest thing to try first and also the most likely.
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 6 лет назад
PS - I hope this goes without saying, but just in case - if you, or anyone out there, ever opens your grill to find the burners have blown out - IT CAN BE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. First, turn off all gas flow (at the knobs and at the tank). Then, leave the hood open and let the grill air out for 5-10 minutes. Gas will sink to the bottom of your grill. Just because you turn the gas off for a few seconds doesn't mean the built-up gas has dissipated. Thanks again for the question and give us a call if you need any more help troubleshooting - 877-244-0737. It sounds like you have a great grill worth fixing!

Hey Grill Girl, I got a problem and I can't find a solution. My brand new grill isn't lighting. I can hear and smell gas coming from the burner, and the regulator is releasing pressure when I disconnect. So, everything seems to be functioning correctly, yet it won't light with the igniter or a lighter...any ideas?
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 4 года назад
This is definitely an unusual set of circumstances. Did you also buy a new regulator with your grill? It is possible that an old regulator would be letting only a small amount of gas through, which is enough to smell but not enough to hold a light. Please always be sure to keep the hood of your grill open for 10-15 minutes after attempting to fix this issue. Propane gas is heavier than air and can settle in the body of your grill which could be a huge hazard. If your regulator is brand new, you could try it on a friend's grill to make sure it isn't faulty. Otherwise, it is possible there is some blockage or issue with the manifold/valve system. that would require quite a more in-depth troubleshooting walk-through. Let me know if you've figured it out!

Jenn Aire propane grill. Front of the barbecue heats up. Too hot to touch, knobs are beginning to melt off. Any ideas?
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 7 лет назад
Yes, Sounds like you are having some gas flow issues for sure. Oftentimes if there is any obstruction (like spider webs or burner residue) in any part of the burner, it will kick the gas back up to the front of the burner. You can get flames shooting out the front of the burner which is called a "flashback" and can definitely get hot enough to melt knobs. Give the burners a thorough check and let us know if you are still having issues!

Learned the hard way.....DO THIS FIRST. One additional thing to check if not all of your burners are lighting---MAKE SURE THE GAS CONTROL TO THE SIDE BURNER IS TURNED OFF BEFORE STARTING TO LIGHT UP THE GRILL! If not, you'll soon find out there is not enough propane to extend beyond the first burner. Easy fix but not too hard to forget. Also, if your new to gas grilling, check to see if your electronic ignition has a AA battery. If so, replace it annually.

Thanks! Yes, it is possible your regulator is not allowing enough gas flow for all the burners to light. But it is also possible there is a blockage somewhere in the line. The first thing to do is clean out your orifices (those little brass nuts at the end of your valve where the gas flows into the burner). Sometimes they get blocked up with dust or spider webs. Make sure you turn the gas off on your tank or line first! Good luck :)

So first off, thanks for making this video. You seem very knowledgeable and thanks for sharing your knowledge and your skill at fixing grills. With that said, please reconsider wearing the pearls. I know its a style thing or its a look your going for... but it's hard to take you serious with them. Loose jewelry should not be worn when working on, well anything really. It's the same with neck ties for guys. It's something they teach right away in shop class and such. I was really worried there when I saw you leaning in over the grill. No real danger for say, (might damage the pearls is all!), but say you work on motors or a fan or something mechanical, you going to have a bad day. Even with electrical whether wires or computers, anything loose is a no no. Please be safe.

The burners on my grill work fine but when I turn all 4 burners on at the same time, the flames go down. Any ideas?
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 2 года назад
Sounds like a regulator problem. You can try resetting the regulator: To reset, first turn your propane tank and all burner control knobs completely off. Then disconnect the regulator from the tank. Leave it alone for 15-20 minutes. Then reconnect. Make sure the connection is tight where the regulator hose connects to the grill. You need to use a wrench and make sure it is a snug fit but don't over-tighten. Then turn your tank on. Then your burners and try to light. If you still have low gas, it's time to replace the regulator!

It may or may not have needed a new regulator. The regulator may simply have needed to be reset. Putting unequal pressure on the reg (opening gas valve too fast after a dormant/empty tank) will cause it to shut off. Mine just did that today. Tank ran out while cooking yesterday and sat like that for 12+hrs. Got new tank, hooked it up & turned it all on. Nothing. Turned everything off incl tank. Disconnected the reg from tank & let it sit for 5 min. Reconnected the reg to tank. Opened the valve slowly and voila. The hiss was there when I turned the burner knob on and lit right up. My grill? 2002 Char Broil with original reg. 17 years old.

What will be the other trouble shooting if the regulator was already change and still doesn't light up
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 3 года назад
Hi Antonio, it could be a problem with the ignitor or the valve system. You'll want to note if you can smell any gas at all. If you have a new tank and a new regulator, but you're still not getting any gas into your grill, it could be a blockage in your manifold. Check for spider webs and make sure your valves open and close (they turn without seizing up). If you need more troubleshooting help, please call the GrillPartsSearch.com experts at 678-272-2451

Do you need Teflon tape to make sure gas doesn't leak on fitting?
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 6 лет назад
Hi Jason, You do not need teflon tape on a standard gas regulator connection. It uses what's called a flare fitting and is self-sealing. You would only need teflon tape on what's called a pipe thread fitting. Most home users will not encounter this unless you are hooking up gas lines outside your house or installing your own water heater / gas fireplace etc.

No checking for leaks with soapy water?
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 5 лет назад
great point! I did not need to check with soapy water because I identified the problem before I needed to. However, if you have the sound of gas and the smell of gas, yet no gas in the grill, the soapy water technique is a great one!

Doesn’t the sparker require batteries to work? This is a great viddy, would be even better if you showed how to get the sparker working again.

But you dint clean the glow plugs to spark better. It would light up with the knob. But good job.
@GrillPartsPros
@GrillPartsPros 5 лет назад
It is true that having grease-covered electrodes can cause the "flash-backs" you're referring to where it heats up the knobs and causes damage. That was not happening in the case of this grill, but it's good to be aware of as you clean up an old grill!

True, but you can safely light a gas grill with a long-handled lighter. We just uploaded a video about this! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TBbNOgj1jq4.html
