Rob, I don't really know how to say it, but thanks so much for your generosity putting these types of "how to" video together. Really appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with your viewers without all the Patreon pimping. Hope to see more of these in the future. Best of luck to you this season! Tight lines Bruthah!
You know what’s a breathe of fresh air? It’s how you’re down to earth. There’s no judgement going on just straight passion for the sport. I like that you’re a braid guy and don’t bash on people who use straight 2lb. You give pros and cons to multiple tactics. Do you have an opinion on JDM rods and reels? Would be an interesting next endeavor. I have a 7-6 gloomis tsr and I recently got a 6-3 JDM rod that casts further and is quite a bit more sensitive. I haven’t gotten into their reels yet, but most of them have “shallow spool” models, which would seem more ideal for using braided lines. Thanks for all the info! Love the attention to detail
Thanks Garrett I really appreciate it. Thats an interesting Idea for the future. At this point I have minimal experience with the JDM stuff but I definitely hope to have more soon 🤘
Absolutely excellent video!! Very informative and inspiring to get out and jig more, and less bait and wait!! Cathy and I are looking forward to try all the tips!! Thank you for sharing your expertise!! Lee
This definitely upped my knowledge on jigging and gon to start getting into it more instead of just hitting the bait and wait , thanks for an awesome video!
This video was really helpful and well put together. I learned a lot from it. I felt like when I caught a fish before it was just blind luck. Now I have a better understanding of what to do. Thanks
Excellent video. I am in New Jersey and learned mini jigs. Minows will be a new challenge. The Katana rod will make jigging a treat. Hopefully they will ship one here.
I think minnows are a bit easier to get the hang of than mini jigs. At least they are easier for me haha. Hopefully they will be able to ship out a Katana, outstanding rods 🤘
Thanks I appreciate it 🙏. Its always been my goal not to put out videos that are just me catching fish. I always try to show what im using and how im using it.
Awesome info. One bit of advice and something I've had to work on. The use of ah and um while you're speaking takes away from otherwise good information.
Great job...u store your jigs in the plastic boxes? We need a peek inside! Post em up on IG! Another item to consider is a fly fishing tippet ring..goes between braid and leader. And yes they are small too!
Thanks John I’ll have to look into those. Thats a good idea. I have a video in the works showing everything thing I take out to the lake each day so I’ll definitely include the jig and minnow boxes 🤘
Those should get the job done for sure. If you get to really liking mini jigs the Diawa Presso UL spinning rod in 7’6” or 8’ is a fantastic mini jig rod and can be found for $60-$70. I got to play with one recently and was really impressed with the feel especially for that price 🤘
Great video, Rob. Thanks for your valuable fishing tips and techniques. When you have the 4 - 5 lb line on your spool (lets say the Phenix Ironfeather Fiber Elite Braid), do you use that as your leader line as well or do you use a different size line for your leader? Thanks so much!
I used to use water bobbers and flies years ago. Its a great technique in the sierra for sure. I just dont do it much anymore. Ill probably do a video on it in the future
Hey man awesome content! Me and the family are making our annual trip up to June Lake Loop soon, we’ve always just done wait and bait but I’m looking to try the jig style, this video was very very helpful! Was also wondering what color jigs work best up there? Thanks!!
I get asked this question alot and the short answer is there are no set colors for lakes. There are lots of factors that determine what color a trout is going to want each day. That said in the Sierra most lakes are clear so I typically start with the more natural looking colors instead of the real bright colors as bright colors dont look like somthing that would naturally live in the water. So the best advice I can give you is have some natural, some bright, and some dark. Try all the colors until you start getting bit. This is exactly what myself and all the other GSF Prostaffers do. When we all fish together, everyone use a different color until we can figure out what the trout want that day if all that makes sense
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors makes perfect sense, thanks so much!! I’ll probably try out those little fly fishing things you talked about so I can change quickly
Its just the action of the rod that’s probably causing that. I tend to like a little more whip than stiffness in my rods but thats just me. Keep fishing it for a while and you may get to where you like it. Alternatively you can buy another rod with more of a fast action (stiffer)
I've got another question, I'm on the fence on the vanford between 2500 and 3000, but noticed you like the 2000, what's your thought on the bigger models, even though the only difference is spool size and handle
Great video! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge to newbies like me. I’m fairly new to using mini jigs and was wondering if the trout bite is affected by the fly fishing clips you mentioned. Do you always use those while using mini jigs? Thanks for sharing.
No I haven’t noticed any difference in the bite at all and I’m using those clips all the time now. It comes down to personal preference at the end of the day. Some guys I fish with use them and some don’t but I’ve never noticed a difference in the amount of bites when fishing next to a guy that wasn’t using them.
Rob thanks for the info on the spoons. Picked up both 3 and 4 g. Question for you when you have a second. Looking forward to the cooler weather and the So Cal trout season. Will be fishing braid for the first time this year. How do you set your drag with braided line. I know on mono you set it to give at the point of stretching but how do we do it on braid? Thanks
Honestly I don’t have any set method to setting my drag regardless of what line I’m using. I literally do it by feel. I just set it a couple clicks tighter so the drag isnt active when the fish is on and not running if that makes sense
No worries, you can attach the clips using any fishing knot that you like as there are lots to choose from. I use a Palomar Knot to attach my clips and hooks. Its a simple knot to learn and there are multiple how to videos on youtube covering the palomar knot 🤘
would you say 10 lb braid is too large for the trout in the easterns? i could probably spool 180 or so yards? would be going to flouro leader 2-4 lb. first year trying braid, going in july 🤙🏽🤙🏽
Yeah 10lb braid is a bit heavy if your throwing mini jigs. With bait and wait or spoons/spinners you could get away with it as long as your using a 2-4lb fluoro or mono leader.
why does everyone use the Phenix elixer 7'6. is it ok to go with the 8' elixer 802-2 ??? they are both fast action, but it seems that the 8' elixer has a bit more stiffer tip.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I'm going to mammoth lakes in 3 weeks, any advice? I seem to have just about all the gear you mentioned in this video, and more. Any suggestions for float tube Mamie and Mary and Virginia? Any other lakes? Largest I've gotten was a 3.5# out of convict lake. Thank you and much love to you and the sport.
The advice I usually give for the Sierras is try the more natural looking stuff first. Once in a while they get hot on the bright flashy stuff but usually the natural lookin stuff is the ticket. Move around alot. Most of those lakes get good stocks for the end of the season so if your not getting anything at your location go somewhere else. The trout will be out there.
@@SeaSpankerOutdoors your answer, first of all I really appreciate. With that, I am very grateful for your help. I've been going to Bishop, mono, inyo for 30 yrs. This will be my first time doing the lakes IN mammoth. I'm excited from your teaching videos. Thank you to my brother fisherman. Much love
Wow Brotha! What a absolute masterpiece! Great video and you covered everything perfectly . Thanks for the shout out on the baits and rod 🙏 you are a great Angler a great man and a great friend. Now let’s go fish soon lol 🎣 Fish on !
I really like the sienna. I own a 1000 series and it worked great when i was using it but Ive never used the 2500 version. I imagine its just as good as the 1000 it all depends on what you are going to use it fir and if the reel feel good to and how you like to fish 🤘
Golden State Fishing has a mini jig starter kit for $39.99 but its only mini jigs and jig heads, no minnows. If you want minnows and ball heads they are currently sold separately.
Thank you for sharing all your videos, I enjoy them all. Especially this video because I want to start. jigging, and on this video, I learned a lot once again thank you have a great day 🐠🎣🐟😊
Nice NIN shirt. I have a question regarding the Runcl line. Recently a guide told me that Fluor- carbon coated line is the worst thing one can use as leader material. He said that as the mono stretches the fluorocarbon coating doesnt and thus cracks. He said this leaves your line - invisible, seen, invisible, seen as the line is viewed by the fish. I really like the runcl line. I use it on everything. I do catch more fish than my buddies that do not use runcl line but I think they just suck. lol. I wanted to get your thoughts on this cause I’m thinking of going to true Fluorocarbon line for my leaders. Thanks
Very interesting but first ive heard of it. Its possible i guess but I haven’t noticed any issues fishing at all, hook up wise or breaking of the line. It just depends on how into the fishing line science you wanna get and what stuff gives you the most confidence. Ive put the RUNCL through some serious stress over the years and its top notch, especially for the price 🤘
New subscriber, been watching your videos for a bit now and honestly it’s underrated. I’m from Coachella valley area but fish Sarl often, And many others lakes short and long range ocean. Very informative channel. keep doing your thing tight lines Sir.
Great video. I have always been a bait and wait or lure guy and never had luck with jigs. Never knew how you guys cast them out so far. Well, now I know. Thanks for the tips! Guess I’ll be buying some new gear soon…. BTW, I was the guy you guys camped next to at Oh Ridge this past week. I was going to ask you guys then but didn’t want to bother you. We didn’t do so well so we left a day early. Good to meet you, keep up the great videos!
Right on! Yeah I was strictly a bait and wait lures guy myself for many years. Ive only been doing mini jigs and dropshot for the past couple years and it changed everything about the way I fish. They definitely catch more and bigger fish 🤘
Alrighty, this is the video i been looking for. Very good step by step break down. I really wanted to try some mini jiggin but very few around my area uses them. Esp for northern nevada. I use japanese bfs gear thats made for trout fishing mountain streams and the action on the rod you showed is the same thing i look for in a rod. My go rod is shimano trout one ns rods, abosolutely love it. Also idk you seen but they make braided line for trout fishing. Very fine line but strong. Usually bright colored so u can quicky locate where you are at in fast moving water and actually use to ur advantage to fish between/around rocks.
Very cool, Ive seen a few use bfs gear for jigs and it works well. I use Phenix Iron Feather braid in 4lb for my mini jig applications and it works great 🤘
I haven’t fished for years. My 11 year old son wanted to fish. I took him out realized I really don’t know S••• anymore about fishing if I ever did. Thank you Sir for this video it helps a lot. Keep them coming, the info is great especially because I’m from so-cal. Take care Man!
How are you doing Rob. As promised you came through again. Thank you very much for the information and knowledge. Can't wait till fall and the cooler weather to get out and try some of these techniques. I'll pick up some more stuff from Estevan in the time being. Can you recommend the popular spoons for the So Cal lakes.
Hi Brian, I’m doin well. The spoons I recommend are the RHA custom spoons in 3g or 4g. There is a quick link to the website in this videos description if you want to order some. As far as my top RHA picks, I have a video on how to fish spoons for trout and I lay out my favorites 🤘
Rob, I love these videos. Wish I'd come across them sooner. I went to the Golden State Fishing website, but a lot of the minnows I wanted were out of stock. Do they generally stay out of stock for awhile or do they get refreshed periodically?
No, he usually gets the stock right back up very quickly. Right now hes about to announce another brand new custom bait either on Friday or Saturday. So I know hes been working like crazy to get the stock up on the new baits. As soon as that they will get back to others 🤘
Thanks for all the info Brother. Really appreciate it. I am trying to get out this year mire, only been out a few times. Not many lakes where I live. Have to take that road trip. Thanks again
You mentioned Izor Line 2lb as being a bit challenging. I would agree. I moved to CXX 2 lb PLine with excellent results. Plenty limp, little memory ( if spooled correctly on the reel - yes, it does make a difference ) Great video with excellent info. Thank you!!
Hay Rob . Do you fish the new minnows the same way in this video? I have some on the way, and going to be at big Virginia lake on a tube. Thank you for the how to videos. Love what you do. FISH ON!!!!
Rob why has the bites been so tuff at green valley I’ve been trying everything you have said I said hello one day you were out on the boat with your wife but only she answered lol sorry for bothering
No worries, not bothering me in the least. I totally remember that. I have some hearing damage so sometimes I dont catch everything. The sgt major just told me that someone was talking me and I heard her respond but I didn’t know what you said so I didn’t know what to say. Sorry bout that 😬. As far as the bite, I have some theories but no concrete evidence. Strongest theory is that due to the early heat wave the water warmed up fairly quickly but there is plenty of oxygen in the water due to the aerators so the trout have the option of going deep. So in the morning the bite is pretty good but as soon as it warms up the fish go deep until the afternoon bite. Im gonna be out there Friday with the fish finder so hopefully I’ll get some answers
