Join me for a trout spey outing in the Snowy Mountains in south-eastern Australia where I try to show you in depth some of the fishing aspects of trout spey. Although it has been popular overseas for a while, trout spey is an emerging technique in Australian waters and there is still much to be figured out about how best to apply it to our local rivers. Almost all of the information that I've been able to find online about trout spey revolves around casting techniques, so I wanted to do a video focussing instead on the fishing aspects of it and how to approach the river. I hope you find this enjoyable and informative - if you do or if you have any questions please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe!

Great learning video. that rod and set up look so perfect. I Just getting into spey and troutspey. Happy nowadays we have skagit and scandi lines. avout 16 years ago I went to Norway again, but with a (cheap) and very long soft spey rod and a spey line. I practiced, but not enough. plus the set up was so badly tuned. I now have several way shorter d.h rods. and a real nice troutspey #3 . with the exact # heads. The dynamics seems to be intuïtive. And thanks to also this video and many more, I am learning. and when the line shoots a tight loop out hard ,rolling out in the air There its so satisfying. Thanks for making these video's

Thanks Ralph! A #3 trout spey rod is a lovely weight, it's about the perfect middle ground I reckon that allows you to do so much without being too heavy for the size of fish, hope you catch a few good ones! :)

Thanks Peachy, well done! That river was pumping! you did well to land a nice fish in tough conditions. Those fish wouldn't have moved far in that flow to take your flies, that brownie was sitting in behind that bush and your flies must have hit him on the head. Great video with good explanations!

Thanks Paul! Yep it was really pumping that day, another foot and it would've been up over the banks. Yes it does make it harder in those conditions, less obvious feeding lies for the fish and poorer visibility also. :)

What kind of rig are you fishing? Looks like either a very light rod or a heavy head. Nicely done. Update, never mind, watched a little more and you covered what rod and lines etc. Looking forward to spending my winters in Australia swinging some flies when I retire.

Why are you not doing overhead casts?
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing 11 месяцев назад
A combination of bank side cover blocking the back cast in some spots, but also the point was to practice my Spey casting. :)

Work on your double spey or a snake roll into a single spey for that tight second spot, then you don't need room for your upstream anchor. LOL! At about the 49 min mark you are doing just that!

Hi! Good video! Most of the time when i`m fishing trouts/graylings/rainbows etc, i`m using switch rods. And it has been like that about 10 or 11 years now. I`m interested of Sage Trout Spey HD rods and mainly #1 rod. You have #2 on a video. What do you think about that rod? Casting capability to a good distances? And do you have any experience about other switch / trout spey rods? Best regards! Jukka H.

Thanks Jukka! I love the Sage Trout Spey HD #2, it's a wonderful rod. Of course casting distance etc is down to casting ability, conditions, leader and flies etc, but with the 240gr skagit line on there and a light mow tip (80gr) I have been able to cast out to around 80-90 feet, which I think is impressive for a 10'9" 2 weight. With the scandi line on there the distance is a little bit less probably because it's a lower grain weight overall with the leader. I have cast a few other spey/switch rods, mostly Sages and Redingtons and I think it compares very favourably with the other rods I've cast. With the skagit line it is also capable of casting bigger heavier rigs than I had expected it would. With the Scandi you need to stick to the smaller flies. Hope that helps! :)

You need to learn to mend your line in the cast, you are missing tons of fish with all that slack you through into your mends. You should be able to fish your fly immediately.
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing 2 года назад
Thanks Garry, appreciate your feedback. I try to throw mostly aerial mends, it's usually the way to go. When I'm mending in this vid you might not be able to see clearly from the video but they are big upstream aerial mends before the line hits the water. When I do that it's to give the flies a bit more sink time before commencing the swing, but I am still in touch following them down with the rod tip. It's a way of getting a little more depth on the fly without going to the trouble of changing tips. :)
