Some dialog from TROY, 2004
"If you stay in Larisa......you will find peace. You will find a wonderful woman. You will have sons and daughters, and they will have children. And they will love you. When you are gone, they will remember you. But when your children are dead and their children after them... ...your name will be lost. If you go to Troy......glory will be yours. They will write stories about your victories for thousands of years. The world will remember your name. But if you go to Troy......you will never come home. For your glory walks hand in hand with your doom. And I shall never see you again."

Lol. If he had been a real person, I’m sure he wouldn’t be too happy with the way he has been remembered. People usually only talk about him when referring to their weaknesses (their Achilles Heel). I’m sure the last thing he would have wanted is to be remembered for his weakness.

Having read Homer's Odyssey when Odysseus visits the underworld there is a scene were he speaks with the ghost of Achilles and he confesses that he would trade everything to have made a different choice stating "better a lowly farmer than what he has now"
@ramsesleon86
@ramsesleon86 4 года назад
Yeah but what he got in the underworld would not have changed if he became that farmer, and they knew it. That what Odysseus saw down there was every Greek hope for the afterlife. So the best You can get here as inmortality, the inmortality Achilles speaks of in the movie, is the one You achieve by being remenbered eternally,letting for the ones who come after the knowledge of what you did and who You were.

Honestly the film isn't that bad. Like it has some questionable changes like changing Paris and Helen to be star crossed doomed lovers instead of a coward who doomed his nation and a woman who had little to no agence for her entire life. (Like seriously kidnapped by Theseus, kidnapped by Paris, which was influenced by the fact that Aprhodite was probably jealous of her, Eneas trying to murder her and blaming her for Troy's fall, like give the woman a break), demonizing most of the Greeks (don't get me wrong, Agamenon was perfectlt portrayed as the asshole that he was in the Iliad, but Menelaus wasn't that bad. Granted Odysseus was pretty well characterized and while I'm sad for the lack of Diomedes' badassery, I'm somewhat glad they skipped one of the Ajax's moee troubling issues). But all around a pretty good movie. I mean it obviously isn't myth accuarate by a long shot but still.

Odysseus: “But you, Achilles, there is not a man in the world more blest than you. There never has been, never will be one. Time was, when you were alive, we Argives honoured you as a god, and now down here, I see you Lord it over the dead in all your power. So grieve no more at dying, great Achilles.” Achilles: “No winning words about death to me, shining Odysseus! By god, I’d rather slave on earth for another man. Some dirt-poor tenant farmer who scrapes to keep alive than rule down here over all the breathless dead.” In the end, Homer shows us the truth of our vanity and fear of our own mortality. Immortality is an empty vessel.

The sad part about Achilles after deciding to go to Troy was that he actually thought he could leave the war behind and go home. He didn't think it through that his fate was sealed the moment he left Greece. He was already a dead man the moment he stepped onto Trojan soil. Deciding after that moment to leave means nothing, because the prophecy stated he would never come home no matter what he intended afterward.

@@garethcampbell6299 maybe he would have gotten over it. His mother said he will live a happy life. He was ready to ditch the Trojan war with Briseis and he told her that she gave him 'peace in the middle of war'. Achilles realized in the end that there was more to life than glory and combat, but his fate was sealed the moment he left Greece's shores.

This scene confused me. I couldn't tell if she was encouraging him to go to Troy or not. If he went to war, the world would remember him. If he didn't, his descendants would remember him. Either way names live on forever, regardless of who remembers or mentions them!!!
@mikem9001
@mikem9001 4 года назад
She was neither encouraging nor discouraging him. She is immortal and her son is mortal, so one way or another she wil be parted from him, whether its this year or in 50 years' time. But he needs counsel in order to make up his mind, so she brings him divine prophecy, telling him accurately what his choices will mean. If he doesn't go to Troy he will be forgotten in three generations. Its his choice. Since she foresaw this moment before he was born, she probably also knows what choice he will make.

mom knew EXACTLY what she was doing and what she was saying, she wanted her "name" remember just as much as achilles wanted it, she knew her son and she knew his greatest desire. No mother would have said what she said if she wanted her son to stay, she herself had the warrior spirit and knew it was his place to die on the battle field and that their name be remembered.
@mikem9001
@mikem9001 4 года назад
I agree, except I don't think she wanted or needed her own name to be remembered. She is immortal, so sooner or later she will be parted from him whatever he does. But she loves him and gives him what he needs. In this case, he needs prophecy, i.e. the truth about what his choice means, so he can make the right decision. And she has foreseen this since before he was born.

Probably an odd tangent, but if you look at the ship rowing through in the opening part of this scene, or at any scene with galleys, biremes, etc... the oars are never, ever in time with each other. I've done dragon boat racing and waka ama (Maori canoe racing) and you just can't emphasise enough how much a crew in rhythm makes a winning difference. That's why they often show a drummer beating the time, which I imagine was how they enforced the tempo. But if you watch the outside shots the rowers will never be matching each other. Something for directors of those scenes to be mindful of.

I feel like she deliberately said it that way to convince him to go. If she really cared about and loved him the way a mother should, she would've said that very differently or just told him not to go. Does unfortunately feel like she cares more for his glory. Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but that 's the impression I get with this scene.

He was a warrior who embodied the virtues and values of his warrior culture. He was also a demi-God so he saw things in a different perspective. For us, even 1 extra year of life is crucial, whereas he sees that whether he lives 20 years or 70 years, its really just a blink in eternity and he will be dead at the end of it regardless.

@@elnombredelarosa3167 can't agree. Common sense she would have told him he MAY never come home. She pretty much stated it as a fact, if he went to Troy he would die no ifs ands or buts about it. How could she know this for a fact without being a goddess or some type of prophetess? Achilles was the world's greatest warrior and was fighting a type of warfare where that mattered a lot to survival even if it didn't guarantee it. It was not illogical to think he had a good chance to survive if he went to Troy. It was by no means a certainty, because as we saw even the greatest warriors can die in war and he got taken out by a punk attack by Paris. But that was not certain to happen unless it was written by some higher power, in the case of Greek mythology fate which was stronger even than the Gods.
