Not Clickbait!
BROOKFIELD, IL - 19 Aug 2019
Spend enough time around the railroad, and one will see people doing dumb things, such as playing on the tracks or risking their lives trying to beat the train to a grade crossing. In my hundreds (perhaps now thousands) of hours of both railfanning and working in the field for the industry, I have never witnessed such a close call - until now.
While shooting footage for an upcoming edition of the "Railroad Superhighway" series for this channel, a friend and I stood in shocked disbelief as this man came within 3 seconds of being blown up into a billion tiny indistinguishable bits of human goop by Amtrak #381 at Brookfield, Illinois.
Now just imagine how terrified the train's engineer had to have been!
Folks, the railroad maintains these grade crossing warning devices at THEIR expense for YOUR safety. Don't ignore them! This guy was lucky. Far too many have not been. Do not become a statistic!

In our junior year of high school a classmate was killed in exactly this manner by a Long Island Railroad commuter train. He ducked under the gate after a slow moving eastbound train cleared the station and started across the tracks, and was immediately hit by a westbound express. Unfortunately one of the train crew also died of a heart attack as a result.

This reminds me of the time someone walked out in front of me in a parking lot whilst I was driving. They didn't even look both ways before crossing, they just stared down at their phone.

Most people are oblivious to the dangers on the tracks. I feel for the crews, as they can see an accident unfolding, but can do nothing about it. If they were to hit him, they must live with it for the rest of their lives.

They started using an audible warning on the UP West Line here in the Midwest, really loud voice announces "ANOTHER TRAIN COMING, ANOTHER TRAIN COMING" when there are trains obstructing the view of the other tracks as they pull out and the crossing might appear to be safe to cross.

It's the headphones, dammit....always the headphones! I saw the immediate aftermath of a man killed in Decatur, Georgia a few years ago at the McDonough/Candler St. crossing. I was about 500 feet back of the lead engine when I heard a funny pop and the train ground to a stop just as fast as hell. Thought the engineer had blown the block signal just adjacent to the crossing, but sadly, a pedestrian on a skateboard wearing earphones had skated up to a stop ON the track, kicked up his skateboard just in time to be punted 200 feet down the tracks by a CSX train traveling about 30mph. There were several pedestrian witnesses trackside at the crossing as there was a festival of sorts going on only 3 blocks away. Terrible scene, I'll never forget the looks of shock and horror among them. Just as I passed by a Decatur PD Charger roared past me going at least 70mph where people normally go 20-25mph - he had been stationed at the festival. Worse yet was his body, just off the tracks on the other side. I looked away. While it was never established one way or the other, it was speculated that suicide was a possibility. But people are just SO unawares of everything going on around them, too. I guess we'll never know. All I can say is fer Chrissakes, when around RR tracks, LOOK UP AND TAKE THE FUCKING EARPHONES OUT! *Rant over*

Exactly why quiet zones are incredibly dangerous sure he could've looked both ways but still come on local towns is your beauty sleep more important than pedestrian safety
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 4 года назад
VA Railfan, not really. Quiet zones have not proven to be less safe, and for a few reasons. First, crossings get high-level protection with gates, including over sidewalks. Second, train crews still get to use the horn in an emergency, as you saw in this video. So 99% of the time, everybody heeds the crossing protection and no horn is required. But if people ignore the crossing protection - which happens whether it is a quiet zone or not - crews will use the horn to provide additional persuasion to get the hell out of the way. But for the 99% of the time when no horn is needed to prevent somebody from fouling the tracks, then it is just is extra noise communities don't need. Both studies on the subject as well as a high degree of exposure to the industry and the people within it agree with the above almost every time.

Wow! That was close!
@plk5520
@plk5520 4 года назад
That wasn't really a close call. The engineer saw the pedestrian and announced his presence by blowing the horn. The pedestrian made the decision to speed up his pace and continue across the tracks, knowing he had enough time to make it. Nevertheless it was a foolish risk because of what could have happened. A stumble at the wrong moment or his heel getting caught on something could have resulted in a tragedy. I guess the question is whether or not he was breaking any laws in doing what he did. It is however important to keep in mind that the laws of physics are inviolate.

I believe I know what video you are referring to, and I have seen the uncut version. It is not pretty. A video I saw gave some background info on the 2 people, that being the man was the woman's divorce attorney. If I remember correctly, and if that was true. So seemingly he had nothing to gain. That being said though, you hear all sorts of people saying things like he let her get killed, or he should have done this or that. That is easy to say when you see the big picture and you know what is coming and what is going to happen. But that man could have had a lot of things on his mind and not paying attention also, with a case of "get there itis". No one can say how they will react in an incident of split second life or death situations. He just happened to see it a bit sooner to take action and stop himself. People can get the "deer in the headlights" syndrome.

This was almost like the incident with Mary T. Wojtyla, where in 1991 she was struck by a fast moving Metra Train in Downers Grove that was on the left of another stopped metra. She ignored the bells and the sound of the horn just like this man. But she wasn’t as lucky and she was killed on impact.

How close do you think the engineer was to applying the emergency brakes?
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 4 года назад
From the engineers and conductors I have talked with over the last several years, if a car or pedestrian is moving across the tracks in front of them, they won't initiate emergency until a hit has either occurred, or for cars, appears certain to occur. That's because 99% of the time the situation looks like this one, and if they dumped the train it'd lead to a lot of delays, while the problem's cause is long gone. Plus, a few seconds of emergency braking (about 8 seconds in this case which could be considered reasonable), is not going to really make a difference either in arrival time, or damage inflicted. You're dead if hit as a pedestrian over 30 MPH, and probably dead even under that.
@vinnysrailmedia8438
@vinnysrailmedia8438 4 года назад
@@ThornappleRiverRailSeries I see. But it was still a fairly close call nonetheless. There should've been something added to the crossing to warn of a second train approaching. The Metro Blue and Green Lines use that method in the Twin Cities area.
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 4 года назад
That doesn't need to be a thing. Simple: don't cross until the gates start to rise. 99.9% of people on the Racetrack get that. This guy obviously doesn't

I always laugh how North Americans are so impatient. Go to almost any European railcam, you'll notice nobody even starts to cross until all the gates are up and the lights are off.
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries
@ThornappleRiverRailSeries 4 года назад
Well half the difference is how grade-separated Europe is, and that most lines are super busy. This is one of the few American railroads which comes close to the traffic density of most European lines. Most do not expect another train, because usually there isn't.

That seems to be a major factor in many cases, their attention is focused on one train then a second one comes that they do not see or hear in time and........ You really need to use caution when there are multiple tracks, especially in high traffic areas.
