that was a great long distance release on the first hook up

Excellent, just seeing the anglers eye view with no commentary is great, and also seeing nymphing at distance using the flyline to run the nymph downstream. I bet every angler that fishes has those lazy issues-"I should change fly/leader/tippet/take a break" etc but we tend to plug away I sometimes try to beat that by imagining I am fishing for the national team or I need to catch a fish to survive.Great video, even had "the one that got away" -we believe you how big it was lol. I guess you really have to hook and hold in that water as the fish can dive into the rocks?.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks for the kind words Jaques--it seems random with the bigger fish how they fight. The smarter ones will try to roll on the rocks to dislodge the hook. Thanks for believing me and I did get a great look at the fish--I still haven't gotten over it! My best fish on the Truckee was a fat 25.5" brown, ~6lbs. I have lost quite a few big ones as it is not easy to land them in that strong current with the large boulders.

Great Video! Definitely looking forward to nice spring days again. I knew you'd find a monster at that big run! First thing I thought was "tightline that spot!" 😂 Looked like a killer day. Definitely going to focus on the NV side of the Truckee from State line to Verdi more this year. Heading out for a little tomorrow. Weather will be crummy, but hopefully a little warmer than these clear days have been..... Tight lines!!
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
Thanks SH12--I am still thinking about that fish! Good luck on your trip--btw I was in the CA section of the canyon, though the water throughout the canyon is pretty much the same from Verdi to Hirschdale.
@stayhuman12
@stayhuman12 5 лет назад
@@purpledrakefishing yeah, I find the NV sections are just as good, sometimes better. If I was a CA resident I'd get a CA license, but out of state is expensive! I'll take occasional day trips to the LT here and there. Woke up with horrible back pain today so I cancelled my trip out.... Guess I'll stick to the vise for now.

Hi Purple Drake. Thanks for this video. If you had to choose, one over the other: tight-lining (Euro - no indicator "bobber") or American-style nymph fishing, which would you choose?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
Thanks Pat--the Euro style I think is the best overall in being effective & versatile.

What is Nymphing ? And excellent video by the way ...we have a place up in Truckee ...would like to fish it!
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
Thanks Carlos--nymphing is a method of fly fishing where you use nymph flies that are fished subsurface. It is the moste effective method for fly fishing in general, as trout ~90% of their diet is nymphs (aquatic insects).

PD, I figured out where are at in the video. I hooked into a monster fish under the trestle. Where is the the cold water in the East Side? I want to fish this Saturday. The Ewalk is too warm, the McCloud is to far for one day. I am thinking about the canyon part of the big T. or the East Carson. The flow are a little low Ecarson which makes me worried about temp.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Got into some good fishing just upstream of that tressell but didn't catch anything at it--I had a feeling a large fish or two was lurking in there. Between the two, I would fish the Truckee in the canyon. From the local fishing reports I have seen however, is that the water there will be too warm by noon. I might give upper Hat Creek and/or Burney Creek a try this weekend. Another two weeks and we won't have to worry about water temps--can't wait for the fall! I think the Truckee and EW will be amazing in Septober.
@flowflyfishing2131
@flowflyfishing2131 6 лет назад
The monster I hooked was about 10 feet below the trestle on the opposite side of the river as 80. I know the run you are talking about, that is some nice water. I talked to a guy on the McCloud last weekend. He said that Hat was fishing good. I have not ruled out the Pit or McCloud this weekend, but that is a long drive. If I fish the Truckee, maybe I will fish from 6am-12pm. I really want to get out this weekend to practice tightline nymphing.

It looks like I may be going north, McCloud or Pit. Take a peek at this website, it looks like there may be a fire near Hat. www.fire.ca.gov/general/firemaps

What indicators do you use?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 3 года назад
I like the Leeland's EZ Trout Floats. They weren't meant for fly fishing, but I think they are the best indicator out there--easy to put on and very senstive.
@gsflycaddis
@gsflycaddis 6 лет назад
Another great video to demonstrate your impressive nymphing. Was the water too high to make you use indicator? One question, is your Vimeo On Demand allowed to download offline copy once being paid? Thanks
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks Greg--it was very windy so that's why I went with the indicator + I wanted to cover a lot of water fast, though at times I should have switched over (being a little lazy). I think if I was tight lining I would have got a good hook set on that monster brown that I lost. It is still haunting me at the moment.... Water depth was fine though for tight lining--in fact, in those deeper spots you see me fishing towards the end were about 10' or more, and I had the indicator set at about 4-5'. When fish are feeding in those deep holes or runs, fish will hang mid level and will be looking up for their food. A lot of people make the mistake of trying to dredge the bottom in those deep spots. However, tight lining in spots like that is better, because the strike detection in that type of water with an indicator, is very poor. Yes, the video on Vimeo allows for downloads for an offline copy on your computer--thanks for the interest!

Purple Drake A question about the split shots you used in the video, when you chose #4, BB or AB in four different rivers, did you count the weight of your weighted flys as well? Thanks. By the way, it is great video to learn the technique. Hope I can try that soon in Eastern Sierra.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
Thanks Greg, No, I don't count the weight with the flies, but I make sure not to use any heavy flies such as ones with tungsten beads. Brass bead nymphs are ok, as long as there isn't lead wrapped in the under body of a larger sized nymph (#6-12). Tight Lines, PD

What kind....
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
Hi Greg, I use "Leeland's EZ Trout Floats". I have found that it is fairly even between the two flies. Only time I get more with one is when I am fishing an indicator with the two flies below the split shot--in that case 75%+ come on the bottom fly. I was using a rig that had the split shot in the middle of the two flies that day.

Purple Drake Hi- So do you carry both a CA and Nevada fishing license most of the time? Not sure where state line is along the river.
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 5 лет назад
@@gregt1148 Yes, each year I will buy both state licenses. If you look on google maps satellite, you can see a small spillway right on the border line, so that is a good marker if you happen to be fishing in that area.

Anywhere between the town of Truckee and Verdi, NV. Look at google maps in the satellite images to see the access points from I-80. The river is too warm this time of year east from Reno.
@MultiExtreme2009
@MultiExtreme2009 6 лет назад
Purple Drake so it will be slow up there
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
The fishing should be good right now from Truckee to Verdi, but below that/east of Reno will be slow and the water temps too high to fish. It definitely pays to be on the river early now as the fishing really slows down after noon or so.

Purple Drake thank you so much for information and what fly you using?
@purpledrakefishing
@purpledrakefishing 6 лет назад
You're welcome, glad to help. I had on a #8 Rubber Legs nymph and the second fly was a #16 Frenchie. Don't get discouraged if you don't catch much on you're first trip this summer as the fish have seen a lot of fishermen by now--the river also can have off days where it seems the fish just aren't there. It is considered one of the more difficult rivers to fish in the West.
