I'm thoroughly impressed with the way the Australian people move things. The trucks are massive, heavily built ,fortitude's of trucker heaven . I imagine it's some of the worst driving conditions on this planet. Thanks for sharing
Im watching this waiting on my Visa coming through and I just cannot wait to get my hands on one of these yokes!!! Actually quite impressed at how well the trailers follow behind eachother, look very well behaved.
@7784Patrick The empty weight is 30 tons, that is 11 tons for the Kenworth, 8 tons each trailer and 3 tons for the dolley. About 36 tons for the pipes & bolsters & sandbags, so all up weight was 66 tons, legally we can go to 79 tons. Melbourne - Darwin is just over 4 days for 4,000 kms.
@CDNcatskinner Darwin is 3,800 kms from Melbourne or 4,100 kms on the roadtrain route. It is almost due north so you can imagine the difference in climate. Over here it gets hotter as you go north so the opposite to Canada.
@kanukster We usually use about 16 x 2 tonne straps per trailer. When we are on site we strip the straps and move under the crane with just 2 straps which is what the safety regs require. The pipe bolsters are shaped to fit the pipes so really we don't need any straps at all when we are on site at walking speed but we do what they ask us to do.
@Xx69roadrunnerxX Not sure but I think it is a Franna which is the most popular crane on mine and construction sites. The pipe vacuum lift goes on the hook.
It goes a fraction over 6 tonne on the steer with 1800 litres of fuel. The engine with the Cat Brakesaver is 1 1/2 tonnes, so it is heavy, but it is bullet-proof, like all Caterpillar gear.
Yes we have strict working hours in the Eastern States, but in the Northern Territory there are no log books, and in Western Australia the rules are very relaxed. In the outback you hardly ever see police.
Great video Chris i am always glad to see your videos what is your empty weight with your 2 trailers and what is is the weight of your load of pipes? Sorry for al those questions but i am very curious abotut your country have a good week Patrick Melbourne to Darwin how long it takes?
@mad4diesel Varies such a helluva lot because of the loads and winds etc, but it's not too far behind a modern truck, and the more weight the more it is the same as a late truck.
anyone in the truckin game would know to save time you always unstap your load while waiting to get unloaded when your on site, i run milk powder from warrnambool to smithtown and i always unstrap while i wait to get unloaded.
Excellent vid!! You have some of the best vids on YT! Great trucks in Oz, whats not to love!! As always those CAT and Mack V-8's sound amazing! That was also the weirdest crane ive ever seen. Are those type of crane common in Australia? What make and model? Thanks for sharing!
Well, yes and no. The Aussie KW is built in Bayswater Vic but all the major parts are US or Canadian built, like the engines and transmissions, diffs and suspensions, front axle, Aeroquip hoses etc. The cabs and general layout are Aussie designed and built, but even the door hinges and handles are made in US or Canada. I've been around the factory twice. The Aussie KW is quite different to the US and Canadian KWs however.
@Xx69roadrunnerxX It is mech. direct injection. The 3408C was electronically controlled mech. fuel injection. The E is HEUI, pretty sure I am correct on all of that.
@gm16v149 thanks,i never use dog and chains myself if i can avoid it but,as you know some loads have to be chained.i,m always getting it from the boss about using to mant straps but hey i havent had any damage to loads since giving myself a scare.so pays to be cautious and careful
@gm16v149 Im fairly unfamiliar on the 3408's model differences. Does the B have a mechnical fuel system (injection pump)?? Direct injection or pre chamber (cup) engine? When did the 3408's go to the HEUI system?? Thanks mate!
What kind of milage do you get from your 3408? Found one over here but the truck itself is in pretty ruff shape, and it's not double framed, the last thing I'll need when pullin Super B's is to have the truck pull itself apart.
@gm16v149 I'm confused. At the beginning, you showed the load being loaded and various straps being used. But, near the end, I see the load with only two straps per trailer. That's why I questioned it. Not hating, just saying. Can you explain?
Just out of curiosity what does your truck weigh over the steer axle, Those V8 Cat's are fairly heavy. There is an article in one of the latest Truckin' life magazines about cabovers throwing too much weight over the steer. They are fighting to get the steer axle limits increased. Some are complaining it will do too much road damage. In my opinion it should be ok if they use super singles on the steer. Nice KW I like the Spicer gearbox.
Hello! I know this is a old video but i have a few questions i hope you read it and answer it.Are you a owner operator?what is your rotation?(you know how many days on the road and at home at average?)This truck(in australia) have any speed limiter?or speed tachograph? Thank. And you are i think a very deliberate driver, nice simple cluthing and evry moment is perfect.Keep rolling 🤝 welcome from an european truck driver.
RIGHT, here come the questions. how do they upspec your cat? noticed your plates and door of your truck, i thought you were vic based, looks like you have plenty of work ahead of you with all those lengths lined up there
Yeah, these days truckers tend to be a bit spoiled. I know my old truck had A/C that would freeze you out in the winter, but summer where I live is no joke. I think it's safe to say it's hotter where you live though. How many KM you log a year ? Take care and be safe driving.
ill jump the pond and drive but i will need at least a 3408 cat or 12V71 eather one with twin turbo;s with a 6x4 tranni and 3;10 rears on 11R25.5 daytons. or just a truck lol i would love to do that nice vid thanx from the midwest.
@sclair463 I've never seen Americans or Canadians driving trucks over here, we only ever see you guys as tourists or as short term consultants on projects. Could be because it is hard to get a working visa? I don't know. I've heard of and know Australians driving trucks on your side of the pond.
the big cubes are winners..........like the K19. Titan had a K19 versus electronic 14/15 litre engines on their run with triples. The K19 mechanical was faster, more reliable and used less fuel!
@sclair463 a mate of mine from new zealand has just moved to australia and is now working out of port head earning over 150k a year and gets a tax break because of the remoteness of the area.he's driven the ice roads up in the nth o canada and all over the state before coming here he reckons this is the best he's had anywhere else in the world..australia very big wild wet dry amazing place.get ya licenced endorsed and give it a bash what have you got to loose.get a msic and a blue site card
hey was this at the tubemakers facility?if so did you ever know of a guy john wheatcroft,he was killed by a dog and chain that sprung open and hit him in the head.then end result was john passed away 4 weeks after the accident the blow weakened the artery inside his brain and it leaked slowly killing him as they didn't do a cat scan after the accidentthis was back in the 80's so a long time ago.mum still mourns him
I should know that, I lived in the Top End of the NT for 18 years, guess I`m too used now to the Eastern States shorter wheelbase prime movers` to suit OAL laws for Bdoubles.
