im a retired american trucker. ive pulled triples in the mountains of the west coast for 30 years. ive went everrywhere they asked me to go. ive had the living shit scared out of me so many times i cant remember most. ive had my sets spin around 360 degrees so many times in the middle of the highway it seems ridiculous. Ive ALWAYS wanted to run the Austrailian road trains. i grew up 5 blocks from Kenworth. id give ANYTHING to run a big train acrossed the outback. id pay all my own travel and do it for free. i met an italian gentleman one time that had actually done it. he said it was a 3 man team. the passenger seat was always filled with a man with a shotgun ready to shoot "roos" . i guess they end up in the radiator and shut the trucks down in the middle of nowhere. wow. I wanna do that. If you know anyone who may give me a drive test let me know. im serious! i know many american truckers who want the sa,me thing. im a good mechanic. the us army says im an 'expert' rifleman. how fun would that be!!!!! omg! im serious. ill run for 3-4 months if i have to for free. ive never had an accident in nearly 3 million miles.

I used to the truck the Tanami starting in the early 70s, it’s a different breed of drivers now with 600+ horsepower, air conditioning, dust proof cabins and tubeless tyres. . The new soft drivers couldn’t do what we did back then.

Good video. Used to work at the mines out there for quite a few years, and have driven that road many times. One comment worth mentioning - don't know about these days, but when the Granites first opened, everyone soon learnt NOT to use European trucks (Volvo or Scania) on this road. They simply can't handle these conditions and fall to bits.

Worked as a mechanic on off-road coal trucks in the Appalachian mountains in Virginia U.S.A. while not as long as this road still very rough conditions, with steep grades thrown in. Company my Dad and me worked for bought a Volvo, very quickly earned the nickname "road kamode" Volvo no good for rough haul work. Meanwhile the old 87 KW that'd been wrecked 3 times and put back together would just chug along.

After seeing this road, the potholes here on route 11 in Upstate NY are peanuts. Puts things in perspective. Hats off to the truckers who make their pay driving this road.

I drove a 56 seat coach along this road....from the Alice to Beagle Bay, via Halls Creek and back again....back in the early 1990s. Crappy road required 100% attention at all times, but the only problem we had was a failed power steering pump.

+Bazz inBulgaria ..probably should have mentioned that we carried a full load of passengers each way. We were chartered to take passengers to attend a religious festival and back again...every one of them were indiginous (black) and the loveliest passengers a coach driver could wish for. I will never forget those people, or that trip!

Crikey! Never did I think I’d see Beagle Bay pop up in the comments. That road was and is a challenge, was it rabbit flat that was only open Tuesday and Saturday? I flew for a company that delivered mail out that way, was beautiful from the air.

@collossalpenis93 That's why trucks that pull road trains have enough tank capacity to get from one end to the other without refuelling. Sometimes the entire space between the front guards to the rear guards is filled out with tanks. Swallowing 1200 litres of fuel in one go is not unheard of

The best thing about the Tanami s the loss of vibrations and noise when you pull over and stop for a break. A real rattler. And that was in a comfortable Toyota 4wd! (heading for the CSR)

We drove the track back in '99 and found the NT side to be rough but in reasonably good condition. The WA side however was just a goat track with corrugations that would swallow you up and spit you out if you were driving to fast. They got worse the closer you got to Halls Creek.

I repair the trucks which carry the mill balls. After they return, not unusual to replace spring packs, bearings, brakes, valves, wiring and lights on trailers and dollys. Prime movers dont fair much better. Then they do it all again. We run Townsville to Granites

If someone face reality, they should know you cannot just build a rail line ABOVE the flood levels as they can be different levels. Also they should look how long it took to build the Ghan rain line from Adelaide to Alice Springs then Darwin.

I remember the worst road train run did was in 76 on the track from alice to halls. I did the run a few times a year and it was way worse back then. on that 76 run there was convoy of army trucks with a flatbed carring a massive covered disc i thought it was a fuel tank but it was too flat. it was a narrow track back then so i wound down the window and tried to talk to the guy in the other cab. but he pulled a pistol on me and told me keep my mouth shut in a yank accent. never forget that.

Cat 550 600 HP I had Cummins 300.000 ks old blow head gaskets in a CAB over Kenworth. I used to put 20 liters of water in that radiator only after 140 ks load up out of Caltex New Port Melbourne, and I get to Ararat Caltex truck stop, I FUCKEN HATED THAT ENGINE IT DROVE ME NUTS. I remember speaking the mechanic back at the depot, he told me John there not listening to you, let the engine blow, then they will listen to you after speeding 50k on the new motor. Cheers

fifidomalaga Any time friend. I also used to drive the DHL cab over Kenworth pulling those triple trailers. Type in B-Triples in Australia and you will find a video of a DHL triple I reconnised the rego plate on that Cab over. That's the exact truck I used to drive. I have the up most respect for any truck driver earning a living to support his or hers family period. I have done it for years. I must admit I do love the open road over an office any day of the week. I am NO fan of the Cummings engine. I love the CAT C-15 in a Western Star I used to drive that had a lot of grunt, pull like it was nothing. I also have driven many European trucks. My opinion is that the Volvo 500 pulled better that the C-15 cat. The Volvo I drove up the Adelaide hills had 500 HP motor in it. The MAN had a 460 motor in it. I believe you me the MAN did the job better not much between them. but better. I pulled up the Adelaide hills at 27 kph. I found it real interesting mate. I also drove many B-Double fuel tankers, they are super deadly to drive moving all over the place. I will never forget this woman telling me, after she almost lost her life not giving way to me, she tried to go up the inside of me in a around about. I know what your thinking, only as I slammed my brakes on as she was under my B trailer/tanker, as she didn't give way. After I stopped the truck mid around about, I went up to her and I said ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND. She said don't you have big brake as you have a big truck. I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK TO THINK OR SAY. I also said your super lucky I stopped or you would be DEAD after my rear trailer runs straight over you, its to late for everyone one then my family and your family. So her BMW had to be backed out from under the B trailer. But that's what we first though. As it was jammed in between the the API release valves, so they had to lift the whole B trailer to pull the BMW out from under. FULL OF FUEL MIND YOU. After her calmed down I explained to her, she started to cry. She said I didn't realise your jobs were that deadly I AM SHOCKED. All I said to her LOVE WELCOME TO AUSTRALIAN TRUCKING, we all have to do our bit on the road. Cheers mate

Maybe they should think about getting some decent trucks DESIGNED for rough roads, like the Russian trucks, with All Wheel Drive and on-the-move tyre pressure changing!
@Mistralincessant
@Mistralincessant 9 лет назад
and why don't they build a railway? However I suppose the maintenance of the railway would cost much more than all these trucks and vehicles together, probably they don't need trains, because using trains suggests transporting much larger amounts of products than the ones carried by these trucks.

So if they are pulling so much dollar value out of the Tanami, why aren't they at least putting some elevated roads in place so the transport can continue year round? They build rail lines above flood levels and did it over a century ago, so why not road? Especially considering the money the government reaps/gouges from Road Transport every year!! We built a rail line from Darwin to Adelaide... we built a tar sealed Nullarbor in the 70's... why can't we fix this road now?

i hate to disagree as ive never driven this specific road,but the only time things u describe (axles,tires,hitches,etc)break is when one tries to go too fast over that terrain...period! The REAL cause is wether the drivers are being paid by the mile,the hour,or by load vs. road maintenance costs etc..its economics more than any 'road' issue.u dont break an axle unless youre too heavy,going too fast,over too rough terrain
