Trucking and Freight Market May 16 2024: DOT Inspections And Better Conditions

Blitz Week (DOT Inspection Week) definitely had its effect on the freight market. The rejections are up, volumes are climbing higher as they should, but sadly, there is also an equipment wide decrease in spot market rates, most likely due to the fact that diesel is also going down.

Loved seeing all the junkie trucks put out of service at the scales this week. Wish DOT would have blitz every week to help get the rate cutters off the road.

Thanks for the updates Miranda. Passed all exams on Wednesday, I now am a CDL holder. I graduate tomorrow. Do you know of any really great carriers out there? :) Just kidding. But seriously. I am heading to Dallas this Sunday and start orientation at a Mega Carrier on Monday. I am thrilled, been on an emotional roller coaster for weeks now, excited, terrified, elated. I want to thank you again for the updates and rational views of the industry. Thank you.

I am based out of Ohio and I do most of my work, in Omaha or somewhere in Iowa. I have to deadhead a little bit once you deliver to either one of those places but honestly the rates going to and from are pretty decent. At least when the market is operating correctly. I haven’t dragged a load since November I’ve just been sitting. cost are too high rates are too low and the market is just seemingly wildly unstable.

I'm an OTR company driver with almost 5 weeks over the road and 3 days at home. I have 9 years of experience and a clean record, and I cover 3000 miles per week. However, with the cost of living in Los Angeles and inflation, I can't afford it anymore. The company was paying 0.65 per mile in 2015 and they were willing to pay 0.70, but now it seems like the situation is getting worse. 0.60 per mile now.Additionally, dealing with DOT, highway patrol, and weight stations has been tough. It feels like nobody cares about transportation and drivers. I'm so tired.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but dont higher rejection rates typically mean the rate is so low that any contract carrier won't take it?

@waden404
@waden404 Месяц назад
From watching her videos, I think it's contract carriers telling shippers to pound sand (rejection) because shippers want companies to pull it cheaply.
@TruckingMadeSuccessful
@TruckingMadeSuccessful Месяц назад
Correct- and when the load is rejected by contract carriers, it ends up on the spot market. As volumes increase on the spot market, it offsets the load to truck ratio in the carriers favor.
@user-jh9lm3ii7b
@user-jh9lm3ii7b Месяц назад
Are there any thoughts on why Iowa for some reason has such a high rejection rate? And how come other cities and states are not following suite at the same rate of rejection?

They either dont want it or cant do it- rejections usually occur due to capacity issues (contract carriers cutting fleets) but sometimes they find a better alternative on the spot market, yes
