This week, rejections are doing more or less ok, volumes are still better than 2023, diesel is going down. Contract carriers are still earning more but compared to last year, the gap between spot and contract is decreasing. Today we will talk about the mistakes people make when booking spot market freight.

I run into that same "criticism" in my side of the industry, as if helping people be better at their jobs is somehow a net negative or would cost me my business and relationships. Never been an issue. The worst thing that happens is you end up working with a larger pool of people good at what they do, many of whom end up recommending you to others. Keep up the good work.

And this is the reason truckers are in the position we are in because we see each other as competitors instead of a community

You, and many others, have indeed been training me for almost 6 years now. I've been grinding, hustling, saving, keeping my door closed, my mouth shut, and my ears open. And I'm almost ready to make the jump. I was probably ready 2 years ago, but I was smart enough to know the market would crash and I should wait and keep learning. I've already been your "competition" since I've been in the truck. Working for a semi-private fleet with 2,000 trucks that uses cheap freight for back hauls. They just need to move trucks to specific places to pick up more of their product, they don't care if it's 80 cents a mile as long as it gets the truck from A to B quickly. They make their money buying and selling food, not trucking. So yes, I'll soon be competing with all of you as an owner op, but less so than I am now. If that makes sense. All of us mega carrier drivers are your real competition. Teaching us and giving us the confidence to quit and go out on our own is a net positive for small carriers like yourself.

I remember I resisted gouging my customers back in 2021. Because we did not increase the rates dramatically, they stayed with us and pay above average rates in the current market. I remember thinking "enjoy the high rates" while you can driver. This market will not last, they never do. I saw drivers dead head away 2000 miles from my loads that paid 2.00 to 2.25. Truck ologists

When we used to run cross country ran into florida with horrid rates. Just left empty and would hopscotch back across the country taking higher paying loads and deadheading west. Could usually avg close to 1000 a day which was about double what a florida load would pay. Have to know the general lanes to hit where rates are higher. Make sure deadhead is in the right direction to another good spot. Regional pays better than long haul and home more.
@joewatts9132
@joewatts9132 Месяц назад
Yes so it looks like you have to plan out as if you were building a railroad track, but I imagine that (maybe) rates change in the intervening days of transit, and one that you thought you had locked up, once you get there, would be gone. I wonder how trains and planes do it. You'd have to be aware of the two way trip and have all that actually secured I guess, I imagine you already know this and its harder in reality. Interesting breakdown. Also I did the calculation for the very first one in cali $7,000 divided by 2,725 mi and the software doesn't round up for the rate per mile, only one cent but different I guess.

How do you calculate rejection rates?
@TruckingMadeSuccessful
@TruckingMadeSuccessful Месяц назад
Per SONAR, who does this calculation: "FreightWaves SONAR Outbound Tender Rejection Index (OTRI) is an anonymized measurement of mid-sized to large truckload carriers’ willingness to accept the loads that are offered (or tendered) by shippers. OTRI is an indicator of capacity availability in contracted surface freight markets. It is expressed as a percentage of loads of rejected freight to total loads tendered. This index provides data at the national, regional, state and market level. Motor carriers reject load requests for two reasons: As demand for freight hauling services exceeds supply, load requests are rejected; and if the price of a tendered load is considered too low, it is rejected."

When it gets below 2 we just leave empty. Might take 1.95 but usually just tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine. Running reefer though. I can head for Arizona and haul produce for real money. Right now we are seeing higher rates in our lane. 3.50 to 5 dollars a mile.
