Trucking with long-haul driver Biggi - What does it take to drive long distances? | DW Documentary

The truck is Brigitte Mosch’s great love. And she has sacrificed a lot for this love. She has been driving the big rigs for more than 30 years.
She is on the road everywhere from Tunisia to Europe’s far north. Female truck drivers are still very much the exception, especially in long-hauling. And Biggi, as her friends call her, has clear views of what makes a real truck driver. By no means can she have long fingernails and only care about her appearance. The 58-year-old has little time for these so-called trucker babes. Brigitte has been divorced twice and says a relationship and long-distance hauling just don't work. Sylvia Wassermann went with her on the road.

@@joebloggs6131 I hear you bro. But industry should strive to make it less dehumanizing for drivers. Like to have max 10 hrs working hours, and possibility to be home at last 3 times a week. That would also help to solve driver shortage. I drove a semi, and while I loved sole driving so much, fact that life just passed me by was soul crushing.

Go Biggi! Wear steel toed boots! Thanks DW for another excellent documentary. USA also has a "driver shortage," but it really is a retention problem because it is very hard for long-distance drivers, who are treated as independent contractors, to make much more than minimum wage after subtracting expenses and considering total hours.
@hereintranzit
@hereintranzit 11 месяцев назад
Truckers in America are considered unskilled labor (on purpose) and in this way the employers don’t have to abide by the labor laws which apply to trades and skilled labor. The 1970s were the golden age of trucking and it only went to sh!t ever since Jimmy Carter’s carrier deregulation in ‘79. (funny how everybody blames Reagan for that, but the trucking deregulation was Carter’s deal)

Excellent and important exposure of what really impacts folks in our current global society. Thank you DW! You Rock! I remember a doc on truckers coming north from central america due to shortage of truckers and better opportunities. The personal sacrafices are different, but still not acceptable. These truckers took their whole families along but it wasnt easy regardless - for anyone. Glad youve shared this with all of us. Our instant goods are not free shipping in the human sense. Even in a different country i am that much more aware thanks to you. Regular eating is so hard due to time crunch and availability and PARKING - which is a whole other bundle of yarn.

Truck driving in Europe looks pretty cool. Beautiful scenery and the cabovers have more room on the inside than I thought. The truck stops look clean too. Definitely would be a nice change of pace to get to drive in Europe for a year or so
@Ward413
@Ward413 11 месяцев назад
Totally agree. I also feel like that super cheap fleet spec interior we often see in the states isn’t as common with the cab overs in Europe. I’m sure it exists but I feel like a majority of the European trucks I see have the leather wrapped steering wheel, heated/cooled seats, buttons on the steering wheel, nicer seats, etc. that we usually only get on like owner/operator spec trucks. I’m curious how their trucks ride over there too because our trucks are a nightmare; even a brand new 2024 Freightliner Cascadia rides so violently. Even with the seat on the softest air setting, the smallest bump will send me flying through the roof. It’s unbearable. Volvo is the only truck I drove where I could go over a rough road without being thrown all over the place as the interior rattles itself to death. I wonder if the Cabovers are better built.
@shughume
@shughume 11 месяцев назад
@@Ward413 I hope to answer your question well. I would say the base spec model trucks here in Europe are well equipped. They have things like heated seats, steering wheel controls, A/C etc. The higher spec models tend to add things like leather or infotainment or digital climate control etc. But overall I'd say all trucks are well specced. As for comfort, I would say I have driven MAN's, Iveco's and DAF's that I thought were a bit harsh, but again most trucks, especially Volvo and Scania are very comfortable, even if it's a base spec Volvo FM or Scania G-series. Obviously, the higher spec trucks ride even better and, for me, the best is the Volvo FH16 Globetrotter XL. The automatic gearbox (most cabovers are auto these days) is flawlessly smooth and the truck is very quiet and comfortable on distance. The Scania R-Series is also very good. I hope this answers your question, drive safe friend!

Everything, it's a job that destroys you and your family for the boss to have a nice house and a few expensive cars, while you get a tiny bit, average 14 hours per day, minimum 12 hours shift, constant stress with traffic, tight places, restrictions, bad planning from the office and so on, it's a job that pays well, but wen you look into how many hours and stress and broken friendships and relationships, it's a life style simple as that.

150M in revenue and a shortage in employees. Have they tried paying a good wage for the people destroying their bodies and family life? No, probably not.

Truck driver's worst enemy is back and weight due sitting day in day out! I think she should retire and enjoy her retirement since she worked 30 yrs. must have made some good money.

Good for you Biggi. I'm 35 and so far I have a 2 year carrer on public transportation driving buses and no regrets. One thing you are absolutely right. We don't don't do it because it's work. We do it because we love to drive. Best of luck.

She blames her job for her weight which yes it definitely makes her weight worse but if she eats the right things and does the necessary things to stay fit then she wouldn't need all that stuff. People are bed bound and they don't have diabetes and atleast she can get out and actually get exercise. Her job isn't the leading factor in her health. Just eat the right things.

I was stationed with US Air Force in Hof/Saale married my wife who is German finished my tour got a job driving a truck in Germany Max Rubig KG Swarzenbach/Saale 1978 till 1986 there are rules for hours of driving in Germany, they were not used drive till you drop what ever was needed up to 20 hours a day, if you were stopped by police a small fine was given that was it. May be it has changed now?

I've been truck driving ever since 2020. Did over the road for my first year and never touched it again. I'm making the same amount hauling local oil tankers, and I'm home everyday.

@@NotUp2Much Long haul seams easier, but one cannot sleep well in the truck no matter what, and it is detrimental toy your health.

I used to be a trucker in Germany from 2010 through 2015 driving all over Europe. Now since 2017 I drive in the US doing over the road as well. I have to say I really miss Germany and Europe and I'd go back in a heartbeat if the pay was great.

in documentaries I see that American truck are very noisy and old style inside. The gear stick also I don't understand why it is so long. Which differences you see?
@Humanscale800
@Humanscale800 11 месяцев назад
@travelerexperience84 Yes they all have long nose some more some less so the turning radious is bigger but roads are wider too here. Also, when you go for oil change or repairs you don't really have to move stuff away from the dash like in Europe, that part I don't miss lol. I don't remember the noise level difference because im too used to it but maybe US trucks are louder than European.
