Robert Edward Crane (July 13, 1928 - June 29, 1978) was an American actor, drummer, radio personality, and disc jockey known for starring in the CBS situation comedy Hogan's Heroes.
Crane was a drummer from age 11, and he began his career as a radio personality, first in New York City and then in Connecticut. He then moved to Los Angeles where he hosted the number-one rated morning show. In the early 1960s, he moved into acting, eventually landing the lead role of Colonel Robert Hogan in Hogan's Heroes. The series aired from 1965 to 1971, and Crane received two Emmy Award nominations.
Crane's career declined after Hogan's Heroes. He became frustrated with the few roles that he was being offered and began performing in dinner theater. In 1975, he returned to television in the NBC series The Bob Crane Show, but the series received poor ratings and was cancelled after 13 weeks. Afterward, Crane returned to performing in dinner theaters and also appeared in occasional guest spots on television.
Crane was found bludgeoned to death in his Scottsdale, Arizona, apartment while on tour in June 1978 for a dinner theater production of Beginner's Luck. The murder remains officially unsolved. His previously uncontroversial public image suffered due to the suspicious nature of his death and posthumous revelations about his personal life.
Crane frequently videotaped and photographed his own sexual escapades. During the run of Hogan's Heroes, Dawson introduced him to John Henry Carpenter, a regional sales manager for Sony Electronics who often helped famous clients with their video equipment. The two men struck up a friendship and began going to bars together. Crane attracted many women due to his celebrity status, and he introduced Carpenter to them as his manager. Crane and Carpenter would videotape their joint sexual encounters. Crane's son Robert later insisted that all of the women were aware of the videotaping and consented to it, but some had no idea that they had been recorded until they were informed by Scottsdale police after Crane's murder. Carpenter later became national sales manager at Akai, and he arranged his business trips to coincide with Crane's dinner-theater touring schedule so that the two could continue videotaping their sexual encounters with women.
In June 1978, Crane was living in the Winfield Place Apartments in Scottsdale during a run of Beginner's Luck at the Windmill Dinner Theatre. On the afternoon of June 29, his co-star Victoria Ann Berry entered his apartment after he failed to show up for a lunch meeting and discovered his body. Crane had been bludgeoned with a weapon that was never identified, though investigators believed it to be a camera tripod. An electrical cord had been tied around his neck.
Crane's funeral was held on July 5, 1978, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Westwood, Los Angeles. An estimated 200 family members and friends attended, including Patty Duke, John Astin, and Carroll O'Connor. Pallbearers included Hogan's Heroes producer Edward Feldman, co-stars Larry Hovis and Robert Clary, and Crane's son Robert. He was interred in Oakwood Memorial Park in Chatsworth, California. Patricia Olson later had his remains relocated to Westwood Village Memorial Park in Westwood, and she was buried beside him in 2007 under her stage name Sigrid Valdis.

Still love Hogan’s Heroes. John Carpenter was the only one who could have done it. Bob Crane was fast asleep and never saw it coming. Can’t believe he go acquitted with all that evidence in his car. Word was that Bob was getting out of that business but got murdered before he could. It was shocking to find out the truth about him after he was killed. Thank you, Scott for covering the story of that part of his life and death. God bless you

Great presentation, as always!! I've researched this case on my own for years. I've always thought John Carpenter did it. As seems to be the norm back there, the crime scene was obviously messed with.

Evidently you missed the facts that John Carpenter's blood type did NOT match Bob's blood type and when Bob was killed there was a mixed blood type of two men one being Bob's and another being a different man's with the SAME blood type... add that to the Fact, that Bob's blood type was rather UNCOMMON (Not rare but not a common type) the blood not matching Carpenter is why he was never tried or convicted of Bob's murder... now asks yourself... who is the most likely male to SHARE Bob's blood type to the point that even modern medicine (like in the last 6 years) can't separate the two strains of DNA? Because they tried not that long ago. Saw it in a Documentary 2 years ago! Could it be because so much of that DNA was also shared? I personally think it was a male family member, maybe one who thought Bob had already changed his will? But I don't think anyone will ever be able to prove anything. Local cops were determined to prove it was Carpenter, only the blood said no... even in the latest doc the cop was still trying to blame Carpenter.

Scott never disappoints. You did it again. Another great vlog and this time in my backyard. I live outside of the valley and I know that area. I never knew that's where the action happened. In fact, in that old plaza where the dinner theater is, is a little Mexican food joint called LaFonda's and it's pretty good. Maybe you went there, but if you go inside this small restaurant, you'll see signed pictures of celebrities/pro athletes who've eaten there. Anyway, you come out this way, drop a line and my wife and I will treat you to some grub somewhere. Happy trails Scott.

Very nice video Scott. As usual thank you. I started watching the show on cable the year that he died. There was always this big controversy but they weren't saying much because of the nature of of the case. I like how you go to these various locations and do your background homework to check these things out. It's too bad what happened to him. Like many people in Hollywood you got those people that become successful and then it dies off and then they turn into something else. You know the old saying... You live by the sword you die by the sword... How ironic that he was killed with a tripod and a cord around his neck. Thanks again so much Scott I hope you are well be safe and see you later!

Grew up during this time and always watched Hogans Heroes. In a day and age, now, where many things are now normal to see and hear, this story was one of the most horrific, of that time. Many were in shock and many if not all, could not get around the stories and information we were hearing of our well loved Bob Crane, aka Hogan. I guess we all thought he was like the character we grew to love and then so shocked when we learned that he was far from it.

Hey Scotty, what a really informative video. I heard about his escapades some years ago and wanted to look into it more. You did all the hard work for us. I fondly remember watching the show with Mum in the late 70s and into the 80s. We watched it all the time. In the early 80s it was on at 4.30pm on weekdays and we used to watch it after school while we had our snacks. It really gives you a shock when you find out what a lot of your childhood show actors got up to behind closed doors. So many of the actors that played some of my most favourite characters were in reality, terrible people off camera. Thanks a lot for this vid as I was always interested in the back story. Take care Mane, Tango out..........

Great job on explaining this story, Scott. I remember when this happened but never knew the whole story like you told it. I felt bad when he died and very disillusioned when I heard about his escapades. It was disappointing for a fan to hear about this type of double life he lived. If everything that was said he did was true (secret recordings) then it even boils down to criminal activity. That is sad. I still hope that he is resting in peace because no one deserves to have their life taken this way.

I was raised a few scant miles in Scottsdale, AZ, from where Bob was murdered. I had completed my frosh year at BYU in 1978, and returned home to Scottsdale to work for the summer. I was 18 on June 29th, 1978. I'll never forget the shock. I think it's a foregone conclusion that John Carpenter perpetrated the foul deed. It's also a forgone conclusion that the Scottsdale police bungled the investigation, and contaminated the crime scene. They simply were not equipped to handle a celebrity murder of this magnitude. One thing that has always puzled me, for which no one has ever explained. If "Carp" beat Bob to death with a tripod, how did he ever get it out of the condo and dispose of it with nary a single drop, or trace, of Crane's blood or tissue? The police drained the canal in back of the condo, but nothing. They searched all the dumpsters with the same result. I think the only thing they found was a single trace of blood in Carp's rental car, which tested positive as Bob's blood type. This is as far as they got. This was long before DNA advances in forensic investigations. John Carpenter stood trial, but was acuqitted. He later died of a heart attack. So, Bob was not a saint, be he truly was not deserving of his fate. Post Script: Carp flew back to LA the day/night of the murder. The next morning, he called the condo to talk to Bob. Bob's co-star, Victoria Berry anwered the phone and told Carp that the police are her, and she couldn't talk. Carp never asked her why the police were there!

America in the 21st century has an obsession with the cult of celebrity. Crane was what he was towards the end of his life. That lifestyle bred a certain amount of individual contempt for the choices these people made. No need to apologize for how graphic your video may be, it's simply reality. It's just odd the pohleece nor the media of the day never focused more on Carpenter and his connection to Crane's activities.

I think what a lot of people don't do Scott is they don't separate the real person from the character let's remember on TV it was just a character not his real life

A superb presentation, as usual! I love the Wild Wheat poem and beautiful grave marker. But why did the engraver not catch the It's (seeds) / Its error?

I guess I never paid close attention on the details of Jim Crane’s lifestyle . Why didn’t I know this? Lol! I knew of his death but again, no details. Thanks for this video!
