I review, breakdown and explain True Detective Night Country Episode 3. I discuss Season 4 which stars Jodie Foster as Liz as the case on Annie K’s murder was looked into deeper. I react to the connection to the Yellow King Cult, Season 1, the death of the scientists, Evangeline's mother, Lund's speech, what Annie's video was, the meaning of the symbol, Liz and Evangeline’s work on the Wheeler case and any hidden clues and details. I also give my theories and predictions on episode 4.

It’s the most gripping season. I like season 01 bc of your essay on it and of other creators’ essays. Because it’s really slow and full of sex scenes, but at least they’re not gratuitous. What really makes season 01 for me is the undercover episode. Everything else is glossed over. The season makes you feel like it got somewhere, but it really didn’t. The global players/killers/abusers are all well and funding research in Alaska to live forever and forever do their despicable deeds.

Fantastic season, I like when they include a suggestion of the supernatural as they did in season 1. Plus the environment and the performances by the leads, there's a good creep factor this season.

I think True Detective is about being a real detective and how a case can expand decades, because all four seasons are connected one way or the other. Also, it seems the men of Tsalal were having relationships with the local women and some have wedding rings, so, that’s an issue. The most heartbreaking scene is when Liz’ daughter is all pumped that Liz comes to the game, and she barely acknowledges her, only to scold her. A theme of bad parents is present. Travis, Hank, Liz, Evangeline’s father, all questionable parents.
@ceemartin5624
@ceemartin5624 5 месяцев назад
Well, it's natural that her stepmom who is the local police chief would be ALSO pumped out about finding out what happened to the scientists that appeared dead in the ice, especially as it is linked to an old unresolved case. I can't imagine anything that 'big' happening in that small town in years, so of course she's not going to be in 'mom mode' towards an adult step daughter (nor even if it was her real daughter). The same with Hank's son, Pete. It's normal that in such a big case he will be working overtime, trying to solve the case. I can't stand his stupid student wife. Like when she becomes a nurse, if there was suddenly a huge emergency situation with many dead and injured people and she got a call from the hospital asking her to come in, like if her husband was home, would she be saying 'no, sorry, I can't come to the hospital because I'm putting my son to bed?' And if he wasn't home, I'm sure she would just get someone to baby sit and rush over to the hospital.

This has elements of Fortitude which is set in northern Norway but was filmed in Iceland, where a British scientist is also found dead in the ice, and the local police have their hands full trying to uncover strange deaths in the town. Then Stanley Tucci also turns up as a Scotland Yard detective trying to find out what happened to the British scientist. If anyone hasn't seen it and likes this season's setting and 'supernatural' elements, I recommend you watch the first two seasons of Fortitude.

I think for some of the people off the village the toxic water is causing the visions. But i think Rose, Navarro, Navarro's sister & mother can realy see spirits/👻. I also think that Carle knows who is responsble for Annie K's dead and why. There are also responsble for the dead of the scientitst. They put Annie k's 👅 at the lab to district the Police, it was kept one ice for 6 years, why? Maybe the mine is on sacred ground and the entity that stands for the spriral symbol is awake & pissed off. Hence the black water and the still born😢.The 🫎's from episode 1 felt the awakening from the entity and jumped before all would h*ll break loose. And the people or person who. Humans/Tsalal are responsible for the deads, but something spirituele is also going on. Just an idea😊. ❤ this season. 🙋🏿‍♀️

I haven’t had any problems with “liking” Navarro or Danvers-I kind of appreciate the show’s unsparing attitude towards their flaws. This episode was richer because it had more humor (it was dark dark humor but it was the first time I laughed). I love the on-screen darkness and overall theme of concealment and mystery it lends the show. I’m just following along for now and appreciating the slower and more deliberate pace

I believe the environment Navarro finds herself in after hitting her head is the middle east, where she'd been deployed. Looked just like the desert we saw her in before with her mortally wounded friend. She references that moment in this episode when she & Danvers discussed praying. Navarro doesn't talk to God, she "listens", echoing the words the dying soldier told her. The overturned & burned vehicles also looked like a desert theater of war. I thought it was interesting the way the hunter(s) at the nomad camp behaved toward the women - they kept physical distance. Especially the guy who'd worked at the lab years before; he tells them not to come any closer. Reminded me of early social distancing protocols for Covid. He hears the scientists are all dead & his immediate reaction is to get the women OUT, away from him physically. I suspect he knows the scientists were digging up some potentially dangerous organisms. Add to this what he witnessed with the deer suicide, makes sense he's afraid of something contagious.

One thing that’s kinda bugging me when people are trying to determine if Navarro is actually seeing the dead or is just mentally ill is the fact that no one seems to realize that to be mentally ill with a schizo-spectrum disorder or psychosis of some sort, you have to display other symptoms aside from just hallucinating. If someone isn’t also some combo of manic, dealing with extreme acute insomnia, impulsive, using word salad, etc, then they very likely are not crazy. We have seen none of these other symptoms in Navarro which proves to me that her visions are not the result of mental illness. The dead are indeed attempting to communicate with her. Also, even if her visions aren’t actually happening, as in others wouldn’t have seen the scientist sit up straight and tell her that her mom said hi or whatever if they had been in the room with her, doesn’t mean that the only other option is that it was just a hallucination. Something could be putting those visions into her head or causing her to experience them in some other way.

I think Liz symbolizes rationalism in finding the murderer, and Evangeline is the counterpart symbol of seeing supernatural elements of the murder. This season's creator emphasizes the supernatural elements too much; for example, while Eve has her own visions, the audience does not need her sister to learn more about their mom. I am curious to see who solves the case: Liz or Eve. According to the rationale of the True Detective's first season, an evil corporation is behind the murders, and symbolism is just a show. However, looking at the events of the new season, I think Issa Lopez (creator of this season) is trying to include native people's traditions more and more into the show, which suggests we might see the end through the Lenz of a native Alaskan as the show also starts with that nomad.

Great analysis, thank you. I checked the season trailer and it showed a graveyard. I think you’re on the money when it comes to Annie (or part of Annie) being brought back to life. I wonder if Annie’s body is even in her grave. The spiral seems to be used as a talisman for resurrection. Maybe Clark tried to use some of the ancient regenerative organisms they found in the permafrost on Annie, without his fellow scientists’ knowledge, at least in the beginning?

Sure seems like screenwriting talent is getting thin. It looks like they've painted themselves into a corner and everyone will have to ignore the holes in the story to accept the ending. What are they going to do? Claim it was all a delusion from being poisoned from the mine? Or the Caribou suicided because the magnetic poles of the earth are near their switch over? Or how will the supernatural elements be incorporated if they want to maintain an element of materialism in the eventual explanation? Did the Carbou get possessed? Has anything like this happened in real life? A mass caribou stampede ending in death. Maybe. According to the bible, we cannot communicate with dead people. These are demons using their knowledge of the spirit world to deceive people. But in Hollywood, they use this trope of communicating with dead loved ones all the time. As if knowing previous intimate communication or experiences somehow proves it can't be anything other than our dead loved ones trying to get through to us. Whar the average viewer believes isn't my point. The issue is that the people running the world are university educated but lacking a broad knowledge of the world. None of these people read Greek or Latin so have never read the classics. But because they have a degree they think they're profoundly intelligent. I think the lyrics of the opening theme song may have some weight. The scene where Navarro made an off hand remark to the bartender that the dog could eat him someday while he was caring for that Husky left me with the idea that this is like the movie "The Thing". An entity that can control the will of sentient beings. There was a comment on a review vid talking about the Inuit myth of a water deity getting her fingers chopped off as part of a creation story. I think there is a cult that worships that entity and overlaps or competes somehow with the Yellow King cult ie The Blue King sign scene.The woman with the missing finger at the crab factory is part of it and may be why the real reason that the guy who assaulted her had originally terminated the relationship. She obviously lied about recognizing the spiral. There is a consistent theme of people lying to each other. One or more of the scientists are members of the Yellow Kimg tribe. There are blackmail/extortion triangles going on between the mine and the lab. Hank is the bridge between these competing interests. Overall it is about the Feminine energy being the leading force, expect that to weigh in when the three part twist is unveiled.

Hi BP....I like your explanations. Just wondered WTF is the local mine actually mining? I notice that Silver is in the name. I wondered if silver ore processing produces the awful grey slime that is polluting the water table. Another though came to me concerning the research scientists' major focus. At least one of them had a web page profile which mentioned a specialist research interest in the origins and evolution of microcoleus vaginatus which is associated with a lichen species. This is considered a cyanobacterium that has been demonstrated to produce blue-green algae and can lead to poisoning via the water supply source. Interestingly, the white board in the research centre used by Lund in Episode 1 has recorded the following Ice Core K23_0096 Culture 5KP Abnormal DNA section from 618P.D (I hope I have read the board info properly). I'd be interested in any thoughts on the above.

“She” is just the microorganism the scientists were working with. When “she woke up”, they ran because they knew, somehow, what happened if someone came in contact with it. To me me the corpsicle looks like these guys fell into the water (or perhaps voluntarily got into it while hallucinating) and then they got desperate to get out, and that’s why they are piled up like that. Also, “something” killed Annie, Clark found her and moved her (maybe even stabbed her himself) because he didn’t want anyone outside them (the scientists) to know about “her”. I was also thinking the lack of a forensic technician is even more important because without one, no one would have been able to tell the stab wounds on Annie were made postmortem..

Personally, I think Navarro and Danvers are quite charming and distinct from one another. Both clearly love and care for those around them. Navarro has a sacred relationship with her spiritual self. Danvers is clever and funny. I think the biggest difference is how Navarro is willing to risk more than Danvers to do the right thing. Danvers is dealing with her trauma by ignoring it, and Navarro is trying to chase down the answer. I find them both likable, but more importantly I find them compelling.

Unless they're fully going in on the supernatural, which would get away from what the series is, I think it's more about a natural phenomenon that is affecting the residents. While digging, the scientists uncovered some kind of radiation or material that acts as a hallucinogen and causes people to act the way they do. It may also affect the wildlife which is what is doing the actual killing. I think the missing guy may have survived the attack on the station and he placed the bodies outside along with their clothes. It will be interesting to see how it develops, but I'm hoping it's more grounded in reality than the supernatural.

the problem with the danvers - navarro chemistry is that they're both written as similar characters in terms of how they relate to others. of course there's gonna be problems with their on-screen likability, which i think is one of the major flaws of season 4. only in ep3 did they show a glimpse of their former partnership and it's quite an improvement from eps 1 & 2, but still they should have shown that in ep 1 to hook the audience with their tandem. doing this only in ep3 is a bit too late given this season only has 6 episodes. i think danvers is the more believable a*sshole between the 2, but then that's just jodie foster's seasoned talent. navarro should have been the balancing element to danvers.

She wa she cop first on the scene and could have cut Annie's tongue out there and kept it until she rampaged the station. What was she really doing at the station when Liz ran into her there. With all the trauma she has suffered, Eve is a mess. Finding her mother's necklace in her car? Frozen blind dude warning her? Seeing things in the dark? It's all there. My guess is Clark snapped, killed Annie and Navarro killed all the scientist.....

I feel a bit off about the Wheeler case and why it would have needed to be passed as a murder-suicide. They could have said he drew his gun at them, and they fired, or he had a weapon, and they fired. Many possible ways of shooting a man who has a weapon if you are police. But why say murder-suicide. Something else must have happened. And I definitely think the perpetrator would be Liz. We have seen that she is more willing to bend the rules to get what she wants if she thinks it's justified.

This show came back with a vengeance! It’s been exponentially getting more and more epic with each season (we’ll forget season 2 ever came out). My main theory is there’s demonic influence in Ennis, and "the demons" don’t really want those people digging too deep. In True Detective fashion though, they won’t come and say/show it outright, they’ll instead heavily hint as the story stays anchored on the main characters resolving their own internal struggles.

The only survivor from the ice has conveniently been placed in a medically induced coma so we won't be getting any answers as to what happened until the writers decide to wake him up, which doesn't happen until the very end of this episode.
