My class wrote essays one time in 3rd grade about our favorite animals and I chose the chameleon. When I wrote about why it changed its color, I put down things about mood and the temperature. Another kid saw this, and reported my “wrong detail” to the teacher. She sided with the other kid and told me to change that detail to camouflage stuff instead. When I found a book that had proof of why they change color, she told me the book was wrong, and called the principal to punish me and my little 3rd grade self was triggered and hated that teacher and kid for the rest of that school year

Reminds me of when I was in 4th or 5th grade, and my English teacher claimed that the word "siblings" is almost never used, and that everyone says "brothers and sisters" instead, regardless of context. That was frustrating. (Side-note: I live in Sweden, so the class was 2nd-language English.)

They do that to mimic a leaf blowing in the wind. It also confuses the $h*t out of their prey when there's no leaves ...or wind. They're expecting a strike, but when it fails to strike over and over, they get complacent ...then they get eaten! Mine didn't bother most of the time. As soon as I put the crickets in, they darted to the base of their branch and snatched them, almost before they hit the floor of the terrarium!

Since the color change happens due to mood, it is basically what chameleons have instead of eyebrows or lips, using them to tell their room mate that they should stop leaving their towels lying round.

I love love love this channel. So great...Another really cool thing about Chameleons is that, independent of the Praying Mantis, they both evolved that back and forth motion while sitting on a branch. I believe it's to blend in with breeze blown foliage and hide from their prey, largely insects, which is the same for both creatures.

A new study has disproved the chromataphore theory. Chameleons actually have microscopic crystals in their cells, and changing how these crystals refract light changes color. Check Veritasium's channel to see it.

+KiboraMalenceo Pretty sure its both actually. Chromataphores are responsible for some color changes, but the crystals are responsible for others (such as colors requiring pigments the chameleon's chromatophores do not possess).
