Agree with you again on this - Atmos track was “ok” - Gunfire / Helicopters / Jets were all great. I kept hearing “it’s an Action Comedy.” With it being mostly in a “city environment” so despite being and “Action Film,” it just wasn’t meant to be that immersive… I did enjoy the entire package though…thought it looked good and sounded pretty good when they used at Atmos

Yep, not really immersive, but decent. Despite not being perfect, I think this 4k is a great upgrade over what was previously available.

I think the biggest issue most are having is the lack of LFE for the biggest action sense we loved about this movie. Did you ever mention what subwoofers you are running in your 10 regrets video? Great videos, by the way. Keep up the great work.

I dont care what anyone says. Ive waited too freaking long. I want True Lies in UHD. Its the greatest action comedy of the 1990s.

Do old films actually look better in UHD 4K? I went through that phase back in 2017 and felt like I was wasting my money, especially when comparing them to digital 4k RU-vid videos and Netflix movies at the time.

No, when it comes to comedy, I prefer the other Jamie Lee Curtis movie... 'A Fish Called Wanda' What a classic.

@@totalplonker824 I love A Fish Called Wanda. But James Cameron is a master filmmaker. People want to hate him and his work. They want to trash his films for being mindless action movies. But theres a lot more going into every shot and in some instances, every frame of a Cameron action movie. Theres really nothing mindless about them. People treated Hitchcock and the suspense genre with the same degree of skepticism at one point. Now look. We look at Hitchcock and his art as a staple in film history. With True Lies, Cameron proved that he can be just as great with comedy as he was with dark drama in T2.

It’s the greatest action comedy of the 90’s, which is exactly why I cannot tolerate this crap.

@@maybachyard90% older movies look even better than newer movies on 4K. There’s more resolution in film prints.

When you wait that long for something, anything less than perfect seems like a disappointment. Probably the most scrutinized releases ever.

Don't have any of them new Cameron 4k discs yet. Waiting for price drops before I get them. Too much price hike with all the hype for sure.

I don't get it, I got my copy, it looked great (enough) and sounds awesome, people are just too damn uptight. It's the best I've ever watched it, like the DVD isn't waxy? come on guys

There is a term i learned from another visual hobby i just started, which also applies here perfectly. The "pixel peepers" definitely take it to the extreme, and i stopped playing that game a long time ago, chasing perfect picture and all that comes with that. I am much more on the audio side now as a result, which is more enjoyable to me for that immersion you get. Eventually i realized, it is a futile effort, and you find yourself no longer just watching and enjoying a movie, no, you are now plastering your eye balls to your screen looking for any sign of "imperfection". I am happy now with clear, and sharp image, and these recent releases at least deliver that. I often wonder if the pixel peepers even bother with having the volume on, don't often hear audio mentioned at all in the conversation. Anywho, i really like how you approached the review of this movie considering the controversy. And you are right, we were enjoying watching them on 19inch CRTs with STEREO speakers lol. Prefect is the enemy of good.

AI has been used regularly for film restoration for more than a decade. The appearance of True Lies was not due to excessive use of these technologies, but due to the poor condition of the original camera negative. Blame the studio for not taking care of its assets, not James Cameron.

How the picture looks will also depend on the equipment used. On the video side the MadVR made a BIG difference in the video for me. I’m using this with a JVC NZ8 Laser projector and the picture was a major improvement.

I love his Old School approach to great movies. The story line should be done well enough to make you forget about the technical aspects and all the other bells & whistles packaging. We are in the golden age of physical media availability, access, and affordability. The physical media shelves have gone from the store to the home. Excellent perspective.

If you knew anything about film production in the era this was produced. It was captured with open matte Super 35 and further cropped and printed to look like scope aspect ration 2.35:1. You would understand James Cameron reluctance to release this film on standard and Ultra HD BluRay. The problem with a lot of you physical media wing nuts is that you don't understand film making from that era. I saw it in the movie theater. I made and produced films. You don't understand the challenges with Super 35 and the era of high resolutions film scans.

I wonder how other labels out there manage to overcome these issues and release great, restored from the scratch transfers of older movies. If you don't have the time to make a 4k transfer as good as it can get, then maybe it's better to leave it alone. But why not make some extra money with underwhelming, rushed and artificial looking transfers, right?

I wonder if this may be why Disney has partnered with Sony to handle the production and distribution of physical media? Sony does a great job. Best to leave it to the ones who know what they’re doing?

They don't make movies like that anymore. It was awesome back in the day when certain actors were putting out movies you knew what kind of movie it was going to be. I miss those days of looking forward to a movie. It's pretty far and few between anymore.

Thing is, it isn't just that it never came out on BluRay, it's that the DVD was framed into 4:3. This means that the, "wide screen" version had big black bars on all four sides and the actual resolution was maybe 300 lines. A BluRay would have eliminated this problem at least. A lot of DVD's back then were framed in 4:3 and it just completely ruins them. 16:9 was already well on its way in at the time so the industry should have never done this. If I ever take over the world as dictator, I will make them recall all those disc and replace them🙂 As for the movie, I always really liked it, I thought it was great when it came out.

The real problem with these not so great transfers is the rule of diminishing returns. People have to pay considerable amounts of money on a 4k disc, especially after its initial release. So, does the picture quality match the asking price? It's that simple and I truly understand the negative reactions. I just knew that would be problems with all these Cameron titles, as soon as they were announced. I very much doubt Cameron himself really cared about' the transfers. I don't know about True Lies and The Abyss, but someone made some measurements and comparisons of the Aliens 4k disc and proved that the transfer was just an upscale of the same one used for the standard blu-ray. So, the recipe was simple: use AI to artificially enhance the sharpness, scrub all the grain and call it a day. Personally, I think this is disappointing and somewhat a slap to the face of others, who really take their time and put a lot of work in properly restoring countless older movies that we all love.
