Join me fault finding a 230-240volt AC circuit issue on a Bessacar Motorhome, RCD tripped out after a few minutes of Heating being used on 1800watt electric mode.

Always a pleasure to watch someone who is knowledgeable about a subject and can make it simple enough for everyone to understand. I wonder how they design something as complicated as the heater?

That was interesting, seeing the inside of the truma. Hopefully getting ours fixed soon then we can do winter camping, can't wait for that. Thanks for the video 🐾🐾🐕🐈

You were only testing the continuity of the element itself. If the element wasn't heating, that test would show if you had a break in the element core. You'd have needed to do an IR test to earth/outer casing of the elements & cores to find if they were shorting to trip the RCD. As you said though, it sometimes needs to be under load before it shows.
@lifebeyondbricks
@lifebeyondbricks 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and commenting it was a bit of an intermittent fault, sometimes both the original heating elements would heat up correctly and not trip the RCD for a good while and other times they would trip straight away. I don't like showing too much AC testing as I don't want anybody to do the same tests without realising the dangers or taking the proper precautions.

Can't believe you had tools all over the upholstery without any protection in place.

John, if you cut the elements at the end, you can then twist out the two halves of each element with pliers.

Fyi combi 6e wasn't working on gas. Was getting first click but not the second louder click. I hadnt used mine for atleast 6 months .. checked cowel, flu replaced fuses, ran gas in all appliances for 10mins. At a guess it was the shut off valve sticking or a spider had made a nice nest around it. Just kept working 10 times a day.. took a few days then that beautiful sound of the second click and the gas starting to burn. Sometimes these things figure themselves out with a bit of persistence.

Where is the test meter from? I am currently using a multimeter and amps clamp but that looks likes a nice solution. Well done for sorting it out. Chris

Hi guys, it was lovely to see you at Stratford. The one in the video was a cheap AC power meter from amazon and we just put it into a plastic housing with 16Amp hookup connections either end, or you can buy the proper ones from a company called Tough leads. toughleads.co.uk/products/16a-32a-power-meter-amps-volts-watts

Is there any 12V or 24V heating elements that it is possible to change it to instead of the regular 230V? So I easily could use the solar excess power diversion, without having to go via the inverter.
@lifebeyondbricks
@lifebeyondbricks Год назад
Thanks for watching and commenting, Not as far as I am aware. It is technically possible to do but would take a lot of re-engineering as the heating elements and 240v control system are bespoke for these types of Truma heating systems. The biggest issue with these Truma heaters in particular is the electric heating elements were only ever designed as an add on to an existing gas burning system so even at 240v AC they are woefully inefficient. There are 12/24 volt stand alone water heaters available but not for heating as far as I am aware.

Hi John good video. Personally I’d say that a continuity test will not necessarily expose an earth leakage. It would be better to use an insulation tester (earth leakage) usually at 500volts. That said it may not show when cold. These elements are ridiculously expensive when compared to similar for cookers etc. From my soon to be former life in appliance repairs, there are some companies who can repair or manufacture either obsolete or expensive elements.
@lifebeyondbricks
@lifebeyondbricks Год назад
Thanks for watching and commenting, Yes, an earth leakage tester would be much better to use. Yes the Genuine parts from Truma are expensive, and normally out of stock, we have since found some non-genuine elements which are better priced, time will tell whether they last as long as the Truma part though.

@@lifebeyondbricks in my game the original cooker elements are inferior to many of the copies. “EGO” and”IRCA” are good. To be honest I’ve just bought a combi 6e blind. Advertised as complete in the box. I’m gonna do a vid in breaking it down and bench testing before fitting. Greg was telling me to do more vids but I’m a bit impatient. My New Year’s resolution will be to try harder.
@lifebeyondbricks
@lifebeyondbricks Год назад
@@craster_van_kippers Nice one, you bought the big daddy C6E, they are pretty good in terms of their size and weight and ease of install, I just think Truma could have done better with the heat transfer from the heating elements themselves, if you use them from cold heating the water and blown air it takes an absolute age to get hot.
@craster_van_kippers
@craster_van_kippers Год назад
Yeah well, it was advertised as complete in the box but 10 years old. It’s probs a bit big for our van but I reckon worth a punt at £400. Tbh I’d make money breaking it up. Anyway looking forward to the challenge. It’ll be a bit disappointing if it works. I was about to buy a new water heater anyway so “gambled” the cash on this. I’m sort of happy to spend money when no other option but I love a hack or a bargain when possible. I’ve seen elements for £140 but I still reckon that’s too much. An equivalent but not suitable oven element would be about £5. If it needs one I will try to make one.
@lifebeyondbricks
@lifebeyondbricks Год назад
@@craster_van_kippers Yeah you can't argue with £400 for that, to be fair it will suit your van fine it just means it won't use the 3rd stage on the gas burner for very long as your van will get upto target temp quite quick.
@peterneerincx23
@peterneerincx23 Год назад
You could have cut the old element so you can twist them so they come out easily.
@lifebeyondbricks
@lifebeyondbricks 11 месяцев назад
Yeah, wish I would have known that earlier. I have subsequently done this on other Trumas and it works pretty well. although I am glad I completely stripped down the unit as I now understand how they work.
