@@dimarshoerepair had a question When I compared my Truman’s to my PNW boots like whites and franks on a weight to weight basis they’re as heavy and solid Which makes me wonder when you’ve torn them apart - how heavyweight are the leather insole, midsole and heel lifts? When you compare them to (a) other Goodyear welted boots and (b) the traditional handmade stitch down Pacific Northwest boots? Was also wondering the shank - you had the chance to remove one - how strong / supportive did you find it? Finally - the foam filler is between the insole and midsole - if they’re using solid thick 9-10 iron insoles and 10-12 iron mid soles would the foam negatively impact longevity? Thanks!

great video! I'm glad you showed us that the Truman boots don't come with cork fillers and a fiberglass shank. I don't care about the shank but I do want a cork filler to be honest. I was going to buy a pair of Java waxed flesh boots with cap toe on the 20last but now I'm hesitating because of what I learned here. Thanks for the video.

The other day I reached out to Truman about this, this use a “EVA cloud” and also cork but say the foam is better as it doesn’t break down like cork, and may just switch to only use cork. I know you said you only use cork, but I’m curious on your take in EVA foam vs cork, and whether that’s an argument for EVA. I suppose it can always be upgraded like in your video, but makes you think if it’s going to be expensive, and better to just buy a new pair of boots with cork. I’m curious on your take on the matter. Thanks.

A nicely executed rebuild. It'd be great to see cobblers offer a premium all-leather rebuild package though with oak bark tanned leather as the filler instead of cork and an oak bark tanned leather shank instead of wood, steel, or fiberglass. Call it the PNW rebuild package or something. I think boot aficionados and traditionalists and people who just plain appreciate an all-leather construction, minus the outsole of course, would appreciate and opt for it. I know I would. And it'd be a good means for cobblers to generate a little more revenue.

@@dimarshoerepair Right! It's all yours man, run with it. It could work as a nice premium alternative to a standard rebuild package. Upgrade Vibergs or Thursdays or Grant Stones or Aldens or Trumans on and on.

Honestly until recently I thought they did leather and sometimes cork. Now I'm learning they mostly do foam. I'm not paying those prices for foam and I even grit my teeth over cork but I'll do it. Forget them, I'll stick with Nicks or Franks.
@kemitchell
@kemitchell Год назад
@@averyj.steele1074 Nicks uses synthetic slipsoles on their traditional boots. They hold up fine and prevent squeaking. There's no "filler" in PNW stitchdown boots because there's no welt and therefore no cavity within the welt to fill, as with Goodyear shoes like Trumans. White's handwelted boots don't have a cavity, either, but they're even more expensive. On Goodyear, the filler gets replaced when the welt does. It's consumable, like the outsoles. A stitchdown boot at that stage has no welt to replace, so it's a "rebuild"-they replace the whole vamp. All you get back from your old boot is the quarters and heel counter. Which might make sense for 10" loggers from 8oz leather, but not so much for 6" or 7".
@averyj.steele1074
@averyj.steele1074 Год назад
@@kemitchell Apparently you have severely misread my comment. I'm not referring to slip soles and I don't need stitchdown explained, but thanks. Try talking less, you're the only one who cares.

If the insole's thick veg tan, does cork filler really do any molding to the foot, other than just compressing?

Truman uses their midsoles as the heel rand. So I did the same. You dye the midsole at the heel before installing it onto the boot. It's actually a cool effect!

@Coleone139
@Coleone139 Год назад
Personally i wish they used cork, the shank is fine but foam..meh. I was wondering how they kept the price as low as it is🤔 regardless a nice boot, I still intend to buy one eventually. Though I’d rather shell out a few extra bucks for the cork/leather or be provided the option on an MTO🤷🏻‍♂️ guess we’ll find out when I order. For the price it’s not offensive, it’s sensible. They wanted to offer rugged boots in cool leathers w a price that’ll place them in a specific group. Any higher and they’d be losing business to Nick/Whites/Viberg. Cause who’s their competition really? Grant Stone, Parkhurst. Red Wing? Oak Street uses foam too even though their misleading factory RU-vid video displays otherwise. Lots of fancy tricks out there nowadays, one of the reasons i prefer unlined quarters (besides that they roll beautifully and feel nicer). Companies love using thin upper and backing it w “glove lining”, tear apart a Thursday Vanguard for example and you’ll find canvas between the layers. Reeaal slick man. I’m sure you’ve seen these things. These are still a good boot, especially for the price and lead times 👌
