This is a question I get a lot is how to size in Truman boots so I figured I'd do a video people can use to reference. ALWAYS consult the bootmaker first before making any sizing decision!! I show as many boots as I was able to squeeze into this video and did my best to give perspective of the dimensions and illustrate each boot size, brand, and last, for informational purposes only of course!!
In this video I showed Grant Stone boots, you can shop them here:

I also compared Viberg boots, shop them here:

I can't believe that Truman's sizing advice can work for anyone. I just visited the factory and I fit in a half size *above* Brannock. Having said that, now that I know my size, I'm looking forward to getting a pair eventually.

Thanks for taking the time to compare and explain sizing. You’re right about sizing being stressful but after watching mainly yours and Stridewises videos I have been pretty confident in all my purchases especially the Truman’s I just received. Both of you have been a lot of help and I really appreciate that. Keep up the great video’s.

man. this is so helpful. Particularly your experience with sizing up on the Danite sole compared to the Commando sole. I just recently encountered this issue, and thought I was going insane. Tried on a pair with a Commando Sole, and they fit great. Ordered a slightly different makeup with a Danite sole (I'm an EE width, so I had to order), and when they arrived, felt like they were about .5" too small, and have been thoroughly confused about it. But it's evident that the toe box has less volume, and the length slightly shorter than the Commando version as well. So seeing this video definitely made me feel seen haha. Much appreciated.

Yes! Very informative video! Well done. Just wish you owned some Whites and Nicks boots, which is all I have at this point. Working to get some Truman’s and Vibergs, mainly after watching your channel! Of course concerned about sizing, but also arch support. Have gotten accustomed to medium and high arched boots. Somewhat unsure if I’ll like walking in a service boot style.

I think a huge factor to take into account is that some leather stretches and some doesnt. Like chrome excel stretches quite a bit and maybe a half size down or a narrower width might be something to think about. For shell cordovan it doesnt stretch at all so how it fits from day one will be how it fits 10 years for now for the most part. Also how the leather forms to the foot too as well with the food bed. The cork or leather in the sole will compress allowing alittle more room. Alot to consider but as long as the length is correct to your preference going alittle wide will generally be okay. Just my experience I had learned on my journey as I have a had a difficult time with sizing all my life with a club foot that is a size and a half smaller them my other foot, boot sizing is real interesting for me.
@DalesLeatherworks
@DalesLeatherworks 4 года назад
yessir you are absolutely correct, some leather does stretch! it gets tricky though. I have CXL that stretched out over time but I assume it is a lighter weight. my Trumans on the other hand in black CXL are a heavier weight and they haven't budged even a smidge in the 5+ years that I've owned them!! and yes I've faced trials and tribulations with some of my boots as well so I can relate entirely!!!
@413prototype
@413prototype 2 года назад
The reason for all the confusion is that most shoe companies do not relate sizing to the Brannock Device. If everyone used it as the standard from which to compare lasts to, determining sizing would be mostly a matter of how the foot measured off the Brannock Device matched whatever last a boot/shoe is made with. Simple really, other than variables such as personal preference (snug vs. relaxed), and sock weight.
@drift903
@drift903 Год назад
Problem with brannock device can not measure foot volume. That's the reason shoes companies don't use it and neither more than giving clue, nor definite answer. I have asked many companies same sizing problem and they don't really answer my question well, some don't even answer me as avoiding confusion. My brannock size 8 but I have to get size 10D(really shocking) probably my foot volume.The best way to find out sizing is go to Red Wing stores and try your best fit and RW stores can be found in almost big cities in US. Red Wing Iron Ranger size is pretty much compared to most US boots makers. I wear 10D in iron Ranger and same almost to all brands Alden, Rancourt, Oak Street, Truman, Viberg 2030, Helm and Grant Stone. Viberg suggests run large and need to one full size down but reality is the same size as most other boots brands. I had to resell my Viberg 9D and 9.5D due to too tight. Now, wear 10D and perfect fit like gloves.

@@drift903 It is most likely your arch length my guy. That is Rly what does it.
@gk5891
@gk5891 Год назад
People also vary greatly in other ways. I used to run ultra marathons and my foot strengthened to handle thousands of pounds of force for up to 24 hours at a time. Instead of a full size difference unladen to laden mine may not even change (depending on temperature and sock). What this means is my foot essentially is the same length in a low arch and high arch boot. This can throw a definite wrench when manufacturers try to size you for something like a 11067 high arch assuming your foot is going to be significantly shorter than a loaded Brannock.

Love the videos. Thinking of grabbing a pair of black tea core leather on the 79 last. I have an Alden trubalance in 12D which fits me perfectly. Would you recommend the same size and will the Truman’s have the same comfort and arch support as the Alden? Thanks
@DalesLeatherworks
@DalesLeatherworks 2 года назад
if the trubalance 12D are snug then maybe go up a half size depending on the truman last. I take the same size 8.5D in alden trubalance as I do the truman 79 and 20 lasts, however I could take an 8E in alden trubalance as the Aldens are a half size longer than the Trumans. for truman 55 last maybe go up a half size compared to your trubalance

I'm trying to work out my Trueman size. I'm a 9.5 Brannock and I found my ideal size which is 8.5 US (in Presidents). They seem great on the volume and the width across the ball of the foot (about 100mm which is the same as my foot). I thought I'd try to use that to work out my Truman size. I always seem to be an 8 UK in boots for some companies this equates to an 8.5 US and other companies it equates to a 9 US which adds an extra layer of confusion into the mix. I can't seem to work out my ideal size in Red wing Mocs - The 8's are way too narrow. The 8.5 seem like they have too much volume and room in the heel whilst also being possibly too narrow. A few mm insole helps with that but then they may end up too big once the leather softens? I've spoken to Truman and initially they recommended a 9.5 in their 20 and 79 last which I felt was probably going to be a bit big as I'm never true to size in boots - I always downsize. Then I told them about my Thursday and Red Wing experience and they recommended an 8! I thought it was probably way too small unless they fit as big as redwing but much wider across the ball of the foot. If Truman fit smaller than Red Wing there's no way an 8 would be right for me. If Truman are a bit smaller than 875 mocs then an 8.5 could be ideal as long as they are not silly tight on the width like red wing mocs. I'm thinking an 8.5 or 9 could be a sensible guess unless they are huge in volume and width.
@DalesLeatherworks
@DalesLeatherworks Год назад
With all this information and you like the fit of your Thursday presidents in 8.5 then I’d recommend 8.5 in truman as well it sounds like we size the same in most everything as I also wear an 8UK !
@MadelnMachines
@MadelnMachines Год назад
@@DalesLeatherworks Thanks for the tip! Are they red wing sawmills you have? They look so broken in that the width has stretched to the edge of the welt has it? If my red wings did the same it would probably give me the extra 1cm on the 8 US I wanted. I think I need about 1/2cm on the 8.5 to be comfortable width wise. I find it a bit concerning that you say the Truman are longer but not any wider. Could be an even more dodgy fit than the red wings moc 23 last for me as I find them already long and narrow. Do you have any 20 last Trumans? I quite fancy the shrunken bison black moc in 20 last and the evergreen cheaha is only available in 79 last. I could do to know the width across the ball of the foot (widest point) for Truman 8.5 and 9 size and for red wing 23 last mocs. Neither companies are very forthcoming with this information.

@pherble
@pherble 3 года назад
Start with a boot company that allows free exchanges and returns, that will lower the risk. Timberlands will probably be 1/2 size larger than a Goodyear welt so maybe try a 9.5. Wear them in the morning and don't go out of the house (so you can send them back), and be sure to wear the socks you want to wear with them. If they are slightly snug you should be ok, but they shouldn't be tight. Also pay attention to the width and arch. A lot of people settle for a longer shoe in mass produced because they have never really learned the width and height. But try and return and don't be afraid to do it more than once. Lastly, if it is a specific brand you are shopping, call them up or send them an email and give them your details, size width arch and what size and with in your best fitting shoe. And if you have your Brannock size report that (it is not so helpful with high arches or flat feet).
