Trupanion Pet Insurance. Veterinarian's Opinion. 

I have two cats, both are covered by Trupanion, and are in great health. One of them hurt himself running around. He was whimpering, so I took him to the emergency animal hospital. Nothing wrong with him. Trupanion won't tell me what they are doing with my claim. It's been over a month. I've called multiple times. The claim is in review. Meanwhile, the follow up appointment turned up nothing. Absolutely fine. I mentioned Trupanion and the vet said that they're difficult to work with. The receptionist rolled her eyes. It looks like Trupanion has a negative reputation in the vet tech community. I'm tired of calling Trupanion and not getting answers. I'm going to cancel at the end of this month. Just put aside $50 each month for pet care and it'll work out cheaper and better for you and the companions. I've paid them thousands. Learn from my mistakes.

Healthy Paws is great. I have had them for 8 years and everything has always been smooth sailing with them. Secret is, get your pet insured as soon as you bring them home. Get them a “Full Exam” and then they can never tell you it was a preexisting condition. Everything will be covered.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on pet insurance. I never had insurance before, despite having dogs all my life. I previously paid out-of-pocket, and it often costs “a beautiful dollar!” Most companies offer customized plans wherein you raise the deductible and/or lower the percentage covered (e.g. 90% to 80%). The monthly premiums are MUCH lower, and it’s a reasonable option if you have the funds to cover some of the costs yourself. I also think many of them offer a routine care option, and it’s only about $15/month. That’s a big help since routine care is expensive, especially if your dog needs office care more than once or twice a year. A few people have recommended PetsBest, but my vet clinic says they’re all good, and doesn’t provide recommendations. Thank you for providing this information.

I took out this insurance several months ago with hope of never using it. However, my dog came down sick, test showed no Parvo, however, bloodwork shows a "viral infection" so it's being treated as Parvo and Rosie is currently being hospitalized. It appears that I have no deductible and 90% will be covered of the $3,000 hospital stay and treatment. I'm so glad I took the coverage when it was offered! I will keep you updated.

They are like any other insurance; they will always find a reason not to pay your claim. I Had Trupanion for my cat; she was vomiting a lot, I took her to the vet she got some meds and was better in a few days. I submitted a claim to Trupanion and they denied it because 'she had a fever' once, several years before. Even my vet tried for me, explaining to them that the fever that she had was mild and most likely caused by something she ate. It did no good. I payed into that scam for 2 years, save your hard earned money and stay away from them.

We have Trupanion with an intact male German Shepherd Dog. We registered him when he was about 8 months old and our premiums have been less than 75 / month. In fact, our premium actually went down this year by about $3 per month. We've had one claim so far for a test and they were very helpful. That particular instance they didn't really save us any money ($2) but I felt comfortable getting my dog tested for something that may cost $100 per month if he's diagnosed knowing that they would help cover. I've been very happy with them so far.

I'm using Trupanion for my two dogs since 2013 and 2014. I have mixed feelings. Yes, they paid for my dogs hospitalization, sonograms and other problems we had. But it is laughable they consider ear infection as pre existing condition. And it wasn't even the truth, because my dog did not have ear infections before we got insurance. My dog was 8-9 weeks when we signed up for the policy. I asked my vet to dig through the documents, but he confirmed, no ear infections happened prior getting insurance. Trupanion lied and I was not able to do anything even after producing proof from the vet. Another thing, my dogs policies started at $55 each, now they are 114 for the younger dong and 95.14 for the older dog. Younger dog had more claims, maybe that is impacting the higher premium, but it should not. Knowing all this I'm choosing different company for my new kitten.

I love Trupanion. All six of my cats are covered by Trupanion insurance and boy has it been a lifesaver! Some of my cats have long-term illnesses-- even requiring hospitalization at times-- and I would never have been able to have treated them without this insurance.

Quick note - many other pet insurance companies include the cost of sick visit exams in their comprehensive plans. Preventive exams/ treatment are often available in riders, at extra cost. Trupanion's 90% reimbursement, direct pay to vets, no caps on treatment & low premiums were my deciding factors. Paying for vet exams was acceptable to me. I have a cat, 1 yr old - your mileage may vary!

I'm disturbed by the deductible and when its billed. Not by year, like human insurance, but determined by medical need. Based on my own research, this one sounds better than all the other pet insurances out there that are nothing more than "catch'em, kill'em, en skin'em" scam of pet owners. There's no incentive to encourage preventative measures, like worm, rabies shots, etc. (I've known some pet owners who took their weinie dogs in to have their anal glands expelled and teeth cleaned! They were her children to her). Pet insurance is still a costly shaft to the pet owner. Consider the medical need of a pet: Cancer, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, heart disease.....even this insurance company has its coverage designed to line their pockets by your faithful love of a pet that's been with you through thick and thin. Take that$371 bucks, put it in a savings account every month, and use it to pay for your vet needs. The more people buy pet insurance like this, is only going to drive up the costs of the medical treatments. Besides that..........I love my cats. My oldest was 19yo chronic kidney disease, and when she reached end stage, we took her to the vet, held her in our arms for the last time and had her put to sleep. She was suffering. I have a conviction over pouring good money after bad. Dialysis? Absurd treatment. I will not accept it when "I" reach that stage of life, either. It can only keep me alive another 5 yrs max, and quality of life is attached to a tube and machine? Cats and dogs, specifically, are a DIME A DOZEN! I'll go get me another cat, preferably an elderly one. I'm no spring chicken myself. I'll give them a new home, good food, warm in winter, cool in summer. Endless naps together. Send insurance companies like these for pets, a message. Keep your money in YOUR pocket, and make the money and the coverage way more balanced than even this company offers!! They are still playing on your heart strings. Your love for your pets also involves putting them to sleep, when treatment only delays the inevitable. (instead, get them treated for worms and fleas, preventable measures). ......still.....God Bless Our Vets! I still can't help wonder, who realllllyyyy owns this insurance company?

Pet insurance is not really insurance in the sense of what humans use. This industry is very profitable because of this.

STAY AWAY!!!!!!!! I took my dog to the vet, and they recommended I call Trupanion and get insurance for my puppy. I already had pet insurance for 2 months but I called them and the man I spoke with and I had a lovely chat about what was happening and why I wanted pet insurance. He convinced me to switch to their company from my current provider - Fetch. Now they won't honor a claim that I would have had covered by Fetch. $1500 gone!

Trupanion paid $42,000.00 for my dogs vet bill! I highly recommend them!!!

im between either pets best cause they offer some coverage for extras like $50 for wellness exams, $45 for vaccinations, $90 for diagnostic panels, and $100 for preventative medications and it makes it only like $6-7 more then healthy paws would be for me. Anyone ever used pets best??

Finally getting info from youtube !! the Comments that is !! Real people ! Trupanion was not answering the phone even for sales, where companies usually put their coolest people on the sales side. Half hour one day, half hour the next and finally someone said they had to look to transfer my call to a Canadian rep. Waited again, then she came back no one available right now. Someone could call back in 24-48 hours (and i don't sit by the phone right). I asked for a more direct number she said okay and gave me the number i called. Other remarks about her twisting words, i think she was an adjuster even, absolute red flag. i could go on. For a new inquiry ! and i had some questions needed answers and I'm sure she would've gotten mad if she was allowed to talk canadian.

Hi Dr. Dan, do you think Trupanion is the best? I had Healthy Paws for my last dog but I heard good things about Trupanion. I hope to get a new puppy, 2nd son this month.

What if you never had pet insurance or ever took a dog to the vet and my dog most likely have a present diagnosis would it cover treatments ect ?

I’ve had them for a year. They require info on any vet or vet hospital you’ve ever taken your pet to, and evidence of annual health visits (which they do not cover) and proof that any claims are not pre-existing conditions. Thus far, I’ve not gotten them to pay a cent on any claims I’ve filed. You also have to wait for a very long time when you try to reach them by phone. To add insult to this, they just raised their premium rates by 30 percent this year. I cannot recommend them.

If you’re going to use Trupanion make sure your dog is from a breeder and that you sign them up the day you bring them home. If you do they’re supposed to waive the 5 day injury 30 day illness wait time. We’ve been clients for 15 years. When we had major illnesses they were great. Cushing’s disease, laryngeal paralysis, bladder cancer. There was definitely some breech of contract. Also make sure you have a top notch veterinarian who knows how to write up procedures and illness treatments correctly. Be very careful when there’s an oral disease that needs treatment/ surgery. They love to deny these claims. They don’t cover routine cleanings. Your best bet with this once great company is to get a catastrophic policy. $1000.00 deductible. If you get a large breed it’s extremely expensive. Then I’d suggest a $500 deductible. Know how the policy works. For each different illness or injury you have to meet the deductible. And be careful with gastric issues like vomiting and diarrhea. They will say it’s a new condition if you don’t put on the claim that both were present. Like any insurance company they want your monthly premiums and then they love to deny your claim. Saving away what you’d pay every month will never cover the cost of some illnesses or major injury. Especially when it’s a lifelong issue. If you’re adopting a shelter animal they will say every single problem is pre existing. Be very careful. Most major veterinary hospitals highly discourage picking this insurance company. They used to be the number one pet insurance. Now they don’t even make the top ten. And they have started raising premiums so high that most people have to cancel their policy. You can also adjust your monthly premium. But there’s a catch to doing that if you have already filed for an illness or injury that is on going. You will have to meet the difference for the new deductible. Ex. You have a $500 deductible and switch to a $750 deductible. Now you have to pay another $250 for the existing illness or injury that had been claimed. Everyone with an animal companion, especially a pure breed or large breed should get insurance. Ask your veterinarian. But know that most veterinarians do not want to deal with any insurance company because they are all thieves!

Spot pet insurance This is pricy saying it's 390 a month for my dog. I'd rather go with a different option that's more afforded with better coverage do with it what you will.

Anyone have Lemonade! So far I had no issues with pay out for preventative care! They have a cap of 20k vs unlimited! They also pay up to 80%! They have no issues on payout though!

Trupanion monthly rates are very expensive.

UPDATE - My dogs insurance went up to $400 A MONTH so $4,800 a year, with 80% coverage in trupanion. I had to cancel it. This is the cost of human insurance. I don't recommend it!!!

What about spot pet insurance?

Terrible . Paid for 7 years and they are making me pay 200 deductible for every claim with same approved condition. When i sent a nasty email to claims dept someone thought it cute to send me a 640 claim denied with no explanation. Ok. Filed complaint witg BBB. I will get a resolution. Prepared to contact attorney. This insurance business for pets is a scam

Trupanion does not care about your pets. My vet even got involved and Trupanion still would not reimburse me at all, this company will do everything within their power to claim everything as pre-existing. They don’t care about your pets. I was just lucky my cat wasn’t going g through anything serious. I was too naive at the time when I signed up and didn’t see all the bad reviews of people going through the same exact experience.
