There's a lot they don't tell you about being a working mom - like the motherhood penalty, the balancing act, the impacts of maternity leave... etc. This is something I have been keeping from my channel for years, but I'm ready to reveal what it's like being a working mom. Being a working mom is incredibly hard (though being a mom in general is one of the best things I've ever done).
I can confidently say that all working moms will experience some career impact. How MUCH impact depends on what company they work for, who their manager is, and what role they are in.
I hope this video is helpful for anyone who is expecting, has little ones, or is experiencing some other life challenge or change outside of work.

Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your experiences! I am not (yet) a working mom but hearing your overall experience made me less anxious, specially while you were trying to not sugar code circumstances that were hard to accept that did change (e.g., additional time constraints, career impact, need for efficiency, etc.)

Thank you SO much for this comment! I was also so anxious about the impacts on my career, but now that I'm on the other side I'm so much more at peace with it :)

Girl, as a high performing working mom…every moment of this video I empathized. I also, did not have a great pregnancy and there are so little people who speak about this. If you ever wanna talk about it, let me know. I’m a ux manager and love the product role. So we could probably talk about it a lot. I wouldn’t mind recording it! Have a good day! Love your videos.

Thank you so much for this message!! As I mention in the video, one of the unexpected gifts of being a working mom is getting indoctrinated into the community of other working moms! I would love to chat with you - if you're still open to it send me an email at alisa.h.works@gmail.com and we can set something up!

And the next video, should be you interviewing your husband how to be a working dad 😀 I've been working part time now for one year to see my son grow and be there for the family. I don't know about the USA, but in Germany it's more and more often, that the man is staying at home or working part time for a longer time (until 3 years). Of course, often it's not possible because of the financial situation. But if it is possible, you should not be afraid to have a 50/50 impact on the career for both parents 🙂

Wow I love this comment so much. It's very cool that you are working part-time to see your son grow and to be there for him/the family. In the USA I'm starting to see some companies have longer parental leaves, but many companies still have little to no time off for dads. I love the notion of having the 50/50 impact if at all possible. My husband doesn't love being on camera, but I'll see if he's into doing an interview 🤗

Hi Alisa - thank you for your vulnerability and transparency - especially for sharing the news that you are a mom! Congrats to you and the family. As a PM myself and not yet a mom but very much a desire - I have wrangled with the thoughts of a career change when I do become a mom given that being a PM at times (ok more like many times) is an all consuming job. Perhaps the thoughts are too preemptive because I also believe in a human's power to adapt - so many working moms do it - so I'm sure I may adjust when the time arrives. It is also ok to adjust by making a career change if that's what's best for you and the family. Essentially, I appreciate an honest account of how the experience has been for you and that you aren't being prescriptive in your narrative. Sending you positive vibes!

Hello! Thank you for sharing! It's definitely hard to balance it all - and it's impossible to do everything perfectly. I think we just have to do what feels right - so when the time comes where you have a little one, you'll probably get a sense of whether balancing the job and a child is manageable, or if you need to figure something else out. There are PLENTY of mom PM's out there, but there are also likely a lot of women who changed jobs after having a child!

I got super excited when I saw the title for this video! As a new mum I was searching for more specific tech mum content on RU-vid but couldn't find any. Would love to see more content on this topic, specifically from those in tech. I've been a follower for a while and have admired your videos, inspiring my own venture into RU-vid :) I'm a product marketer working in tech.

First of all- big hugs to you! You are not the only one that is going through this journey when you juggle motherhood and career. Its tough but at the same time its REWARDING. Its true that you will go through "mom guilt" but your child will grow up as an empathetic human as well a strong one! Keep smiling ❤

Hi Alisa, Thank you for sharing this! I’m a PM and at some point in the next few years I’d like to become a mom, and the thoughts you mention resonate so much with me. For me it’s very nice to see somebody who went through this challenge and despite the difficulties came out stronger 😊 wish you and your daughter all the best ❤️

Thank you so much for this video, Alisa. I dream of being a mom in the upcoming years, but I feel you 100% when you say to be very career-driven. Currently, I would not be able to pull it off (small company, no maternity leave, etc), but hearing your testimonial helps me plan ahead to make sure I get to enjoy this very unique moment while keeping my career in place.

Glad you shared this. My naive self always thought the world has evolved and gender bias doesn’t exist. Definitely still does. Specially around pregnancy.

That was always my naive take too! Growing up I never noticed the bias, then entering the professional world I felt it a bit, and now feel it a bit more now that I’m a mom!

How do you think being a PM is for working mums? Would you consider pivoting to another role which is less stressful? Loved the video btw!
@AlisaHaman
@AlisaHaman 5 месяцев назад
I'm happy you loved the video! Working moms can absolutely be PM's - in my opinion it really depends on the company culture, and your direct management. If you've got support from your team/manager, and a healthy company culture I think you can definitely make it work!

@@AlisaHaman 100% I know many mums who are incredibly senior PMs. They make it work because they love their careers!
