This is one of the reasons homeschooling is such a great option. Your children are able to choose curriculum based on the way they learn. You must be so excited Lexi will be homeschooling again this year! =)
Excited to see how 4th grade goes for your girl! We are also trying out the typing from TGTB... so we will see how that goes :) but Nicholas is excited!
We are getting close to finishing All About Reading and have been looking for LA options. I’ve never looked into BJU, but it looks pretty amazing! Glad to see these options!
You will LOVE Teaching Textbooks, my boys both work about 1/2 to 1 year ahead in this program after doing Abeka through grade 2! Enjoy! It frees us up to really be more hands on in the other subjects!
Thank you! I’ve been searching for BJU homeschool videos reviews and book flip through and yes, not very many. Thinking that’s the direction I’m going towards
We did BJU 4 this year with my daughter and she really liked it. I like the way it is laid out. We didn't do distance learning either. Hope you enjoy :)
We are considering it! Was the math grouped by concept like the language arts was laid out? For example, working on fractions for 4 weeks, then the next topic etc.
We are finishing Reading 3 Distance Learning I I will have to say that is great. I did the second grade Parent Led for me Teacher Edition was a must. Is a beautiful program with all its components. Yes, it can be adapted. We’ll be doing Reading 4 next, and I’m still debating if I’m going to do Parent Led or Distance Learning. But I have to admit I rely on the Teacher Guide, the layout is amazing.
I’m actually debating on doing BJU Press for grade 3. I wanted to do parent-led because I definitely want the teachers edition, but also want the videos, so I found out that if you do the online course, there is a PDF for the teachers book for each lesson, so you could teach it and then just use the videos on whichever lesson you need more help with! And the online version gives you 20 months to finish, as opposed to sending the dvds back after 13 months, if you need a longer amount of time. Just a thought.
Just a helpful hint: if you’ve already set your daughter’s account up for TT, go ahead and pause the course (if you haven’t already) until she is ready to start. You have a year for the course, but if she doesn’t start for a bulk of time still, it might be helpful later down the road, if you went ahead and paused it now.
I would love to see in BJU. I’ve had a time finding LA for my upcoming 6th grader. We are trying IEW for writing and All About Spelling. If this fails I might need something more traditional maybe.
I appreciate seeing inside the books, not just people holding up the book haha, so I try to make the type of videos I find helpful to watch for myself…thanks for noticing ☺️☺️
We love Evan Moor Skills Sharpeners. We did the science for 1st grade this year along with a ton of others. My only complaint with them is they have too many books and I want to buy them all! I have also been looking at TGATB typing for my 2nd grader for next year. They look good!
I used bju science and history also 8th grade literature for my son 6-8th grade. He absolutely loved the literature! The science was really good. I just remember doing those nasty dissections with him and his cousin who also homeschool. My nephew was gagging lol. It had all us in tears 😂. I think that's when he decided to not go in med school- poor cookie. The only thing my husband pointed out was it is very much like "school" versus homeschool type of not being basic textbook, worksheets tests. I'm doing literature this yr with my going 6th grade daughter. Gonna try online Bible and I'm thinking maybe online Lang arts. I'm not sure.
I'm SO looking forward to your future Teaching Textbooks review next year! My oldest will be starting it next year towards the end. I'm hoping it's our "forever" math because I'm not good at teaching Math and need to outsource it somehow. My plan B would be Shormann, but so far I love everything I've learned about Teaching Textbooks, lots of my references have used it till the end of highschool and they placed high in math scores! ❤️
@@thepracticalhomeschooler You are right! Thank you. It'll have to be a plan B waaaaay in the future! 😂 I hope Teaching Textbooks ends up being a good fit!
Looks like a great year ahead! I’m very interested in seeing how BJU goes- I’ve heard a lot (of good things) about their English! I actually just bought the skill sharpener science books as well, for my rising 2nd and 3rd graders, and am also wondering if I should return them😂. They look good, but I’m wondering if my kids are going to be overloaded with too many workbooks.
We started BJU science 4 last year and a few months in my son said he didn’t love it…so we switched to TGATB science units but now he wants to go back to BJU science for 5th grade 😂🤷🏻♀️ so next school year we will be using BJU science 5 and incorporating some science units from TGATB in. We also started this last year with TGATB language arts and he truly hated it so we went with IEW structure and style which he also doesn’t love but it’s working amazing…so for 5th grade we are doing BJU English and we will alternate weeks with IEW 🤷🏻♀️
We are doing bju English 3 and I’m so excited for how it is laid out and looks so thorough! The reading has my attention too but we ended up with mosdos!
We love BJU Press. I use a combination of parent led and distance learning. We love both options. We’re also using Teaching Textbooks. It’s been fine. I do supplement but so far it’s been good.
Have you looked into science shepherd? I had heard about it and I’m thinking of using for our kids next year. Short video lesson then the kids fill out the appropriate sheet out of the workbook.. just a thought!
I would be cautious about teaching textbooks, my son did it and although he was always getting high percentages on his lessons when I wanted to switch math curriculum for the following year he tested two years behind! I’m not sure how that could happen when he never got anything below 90 %. I saw RU-vid video from another homeschool mom saying somwthong similar happened to her child.
She did most of the 4th grade book and she liked it, but I brought her in with the rest of us to do our human body unit, otherwise she would have kept going with Evan Moore
Not sure yet, we haven’t used it haha! I think there will be pros and cons to both. But just by the looks of it, personally I like the way the writing instruction is laid out for BJU
My kiddos like Teaching Textbooks also, but usually a grade ahead. Did you give her the TT5 placement test? Because after BJU 3 she could probably do TT5.
I looked at level 5 and knew she wouldn’t be ready for it. But again, it was in March so I’ll probably assess her again in the summer, but I’m thinking level 4 will still be good for her.
Thank you, that's sounds manageable! I looked into Christian light, and there seems to be so many pages for one lesson, a bit overwhelming for me, let alone the student.
Also, is Spelling addressed anywhere in here? Thinking of moving to this from TGATB LA in the Fall, but my 4th grade girl will still need some spelling help.
